    No basement = No problem,


    House looks like it is built on a slab foundation, it may even be a garage converted into a living area. I've seen weirder stuff doing my job as a real estate appraiser.

    @Dealkiller: I've seen a number of garages-turned-gamerooms, and if you want to see millions of houses on slab foundations, with nary a basement within a two-hour drive, come to New Orleans.


    If you're at or around (or below) sea level, all that's under your ground floor is concrete and water. I haven't seen a basement in a year and a half.

    @Dealkiller: Even if it has a basement, a house and a parking garage have the same occupant load requirement of 40 pounds per square foot.


    It won't collapse from the total weight of the car, but it might from the contact patch poking through the plywood subfloor. Just something to think about when parking one's car in the living room.

    @Ratieya: When I was in college, me and a friend of mine, who was into material sciences and mechanical engineering, would frequently get drunk together. Whenever he drank enough; you know, to the point where he was acting stupid, but didn't realize it, he would start oogling the ladies. He would just get all quiet, and then he would turn to me, and tell the same joke. It happened every time. He would say, "You know why a nail sticks in the wood?" And I'd say, "No, why doesn't it slip out?" And he'd say, "Friction" and then he'd snort a little, the way a drunk does. Then he'd get quiet a minute, and he'd oogle the girls some more, and then he'd say, "Yep, the reason, when you hammer that NAIL into the crotch of the tree, that it stays there... IS THE COMPRESSIBILITY OF WOOD!" And he would snort some more, and laugh too loud, and I'd have to take his beer away, and get him home. But I always remained impressed by the compressibility of wood, by golly. Yes I did.

    This helps back up my ongoing attempt to have a motorbike for getting around the house. If we were meant to walk everywhere they wouldn't have invented engines. Yet the gf still insists on no engines in the house.
