The giant wheels and tires make it look like an R/C car brought to life size...which is probably why I can't not adore it.

I'm no rock crawler and have no idea how capable it would be at it, but looks like it would be quite the snow monster. #wrangler

-Bigass tires to raise the CG higher and make rollovers bumpier
-Chop top to bring roofline closer so when you rollover you hit your head more
-Can't tell if it's a solid axle but doesn't look like it from here - IFS is nice on the street but if you're going offroad, you want it solid for better articulation.
-AMC 4.0 is AWOL. The 3.8 V6 that replaces it isn't an awful engine, but dang. I just liked that gigantic tractor mill glaring out from under the hood, you know? #wrangler

@Elhigh: Big ass tires make rock crawling easier, and raise your ground clearance. This isn't a street cehicle. Plus, if you compare this to nearly any built off-road rig with 40" meats, it's significantly lower, meaning *less* chance of a rollover.

Yes it has solid axles, like all Wranglers, as well as lockers and alloy shafts. And the 4.0 is gone. Its tragic yes, but we're obviously never going to see it in a production vehicle again so we might as well stop bitching when Wrangler based concepts don't have it. #wrangler

@Andrew Richard Chadwick Stevenson: I think what I need to do is go buy some crapped out '95 YJ and build it up the way I want. '95 chassis is the best, too bad it's still the square-eyes model. But whatevs.

Get the 4.0, preferably from a somewhat later model year with less Stone Age EFI, jack it up just a smidge because I don't do any serious offroading - only slapstick offroading. I'm that kinda guy. Find a New Venture TC from a Rubi for the low-low 4.0:1 ratio, add a hardtop and AC because I hate the tent-in-a-hurricane noise and I'm getting old enough and wealthy enough to both need and afford AC. There are some things about which I don't give a shit for the environment, and AC is on that list. When August hits it's frickin hot and I want AC

Nice CD stereo so I can listen to John Sandford murder mysteries while I'm getting stuck.

$5-6 a gallon gas is on it's way back-the instant the economy begins an upswing that consumers can feel, we'll be right back where we were last summer. Oil briefly went past $80 a barrel a couple weeks ago and gas certainly isn't as cheap as it should be for the current economy.

Don't the domestics think instead of reinforcing the idea in the avg. (read: uneducated) consumer's mind that ALL they build is trucks and hot rods (read: bad gas mileage) that perhaps it would be a good idea to try convincing people that they make something else?

Raptors, ZR2s, high HP Camaros, etc......... seems roughly as bright as Dodge reintroducung a Hemi Challenger in 1973. #chevysilverado

I'm a dyed in the wool Chevy guy, but if this is Chevy's answer to the Raptor, I might have to change my allegiance to the blue oval.

It needs a real skid plate instead of a bumper meant to mimic one. And while we're talking bumpers, why does a show vehicle with no pretensions of street legality not incorporate a prerunner style tubular bumper?

Exposed carbon fiber is played out. Paint the truck all one color.

But not beige. Beige by any other name is just as beige. #chevysilverado

The Raptor, Power Wagon and this would all be fun to beat the snot out of on logging roads, dunes or desert. These trucks seem to disregard a couple of realities, though...

First, 'wheeling is hard on stuff. I don't know too many folks who are inclined to beat the tar out of a truck they just dropped 40 to 50 large on. Better to have an old Jeep and lots of junkyard replacement parts.

Second, lightness (and smallness) counts for a lot on the trail, in the bog or climbing that hill. #chevysilverado

@Alfisted: ...and as such, the most practical offroaders happen to be ancient Hiluxes and Samurais (sure, your 'mog, Pinz or C303 would be better, but a bit harder to live with). Full-size trucks don't fit in the woods, and anything that you wouldn't want to acquire a crinkle finish just ends up being a poseur-mobile.

...and as an aside, 300-500hp in this crop of fancy trucks doesn't do you a damn bit of good when finesse and good gear ratios count.

For example, a coworker of mine has a Ram Mega Cab (that he does use for truck stuff, actually), but he knows he'd get high centered or done in by the insanely huge turning radius if he got too far off the beaten path (he hauls an ATV into the area where he hunts this time of year). It's just too damn big to be useful off-road, and he is well-aware of it. #chevysilverado

    @Paul Y. don't drive too fast.:

Building a baja style truck is not "cheap" no matter what you start with. Seems the pre-runner long travel suspension kits and Fox type shocks make these rigs quite a bit pricier than a lifted jeep for crawling.

I guess I'm just saying for it's purpose the Raptor is pretty reasonably priced.

If I were really wanting a pre-runner though, I'd start with a used truck (with character already) and add my own long travel kit, wheels, etc. I'd end up spending as much, but it'd be exactly what I wanted...and a Chevy. #chevysilverado

@RLJ676-LS3 Commuter Car - for the environment: That's a good point -- no matter how you slice it, it isn't cheap to mod a truck like that, and do it right.

Of course, a prerunner type truck makes no sense in the climate I live in, either. As such, it's a bit alien to me, in a way. On the other hand, in these parts, there are plenty of guys who actually do creep around in the woods, where suspension travel, horsepower, and articulation (in the context of crawlers) aren't really as useful as plain ol' ground clearance and a short wheelbase. #chevysilverado
