What in the world could be under the hood of that thing. My only guess would have to be some some early Northstar prototype. Itd be cool to own a hackjob bizarre engine swap actually performed by professional GM engineers.
I would have bought it for the original selling price of 6K, mostly for the lulz.
The car sold for $6000 (plus a 10% commission to the auction house) at Barrett Jackson Palm Beach this past spring.
Since it was sold on a Bill Of Sale, it cannot be titled. Clipped from the B-J auction listing:
THIS IS A CONCEPT VEHICLE. NEITHER GM NOR BARRETT-JACKSON MAKE ANY WARRANTY OR REPRESENTATION OF ANY KIND, EXPRESS OR IMPLIED, CONCERNING THE VEHICLE, INCLUDING NO WARRANTY OF MERCHANTABILITY OR FITNESS FOR A PARTICULAR PURPOSE. THE VEHICLE IS NOT CERTIFIED TO COMPLY WITH ANY FEDERAL, STATE OR LOCAL LAWS, RULES OR REGULATIONS AND MAY NOT BE DRIVEN ON PUBLIC ROADS. THIS VEHICLE WILL BE CONVEYED TO BUYER WITH NO MANUFACTURER STATEMENT OF ORIGIN (MSO) OR TITLE AND THE VEHICLE DOES NOT HAVE A COMPLETE VIN. SOLD ON BILL OF SALE ONLY.
Here is a video taken by a Beretta enthusiast of the car crossing the auction block:
Which end drives? The fore and aft layout says RWD, but I don't see a driveline hump in that one shot of the back seat.
If we can establish the provenance beyond the breathless seller's assertions, it could be worth a fair chunk of change. I dunno that I'd go all the way to $37K, but deep into the 20s, yeah.
@Elhigh: It's hard to see from the craigslist pictures, but if you look closely you can see the engine is transverse mounted. The Hot Rod article referenced here earlier shows a clearer shot.
@Gearhead's Garage: Yeah, I see it now - pic no. 12 looks like it's showing the plumbing along the firewall, and one of the earlier ones, with the handwritten oil capacity - I think that's on the rad shroud.
This has a little more on the background of the car, but not much. It apparently has a ~3.5L SOHC V8, which theoretically rules out Northstar prototype.
This car makes me sad. Not because I don't like it, but because all of this automotive craziness is destined to sit unused for another 23 years, and then some.
I have to think that you could forgo the factory pedigree, and build a reasonable facsimile for a lot less, and actually be able to title and drive it. What fun is all this hotness if you can't drive it?
It's not how I would choose to spend $37,500, but I have to admit that I think it's cool as hell.
This makes one wonder how it all went so wrong between Feretta to Beretta. One, a rear drive eight cylindered beast. The other, a Cavalier with painted bumpers.
@Rust-MyEnemy: At first I thought maybe they were planning on Beretta guns winning the lawsuit and making them change the name. After a little digging, apparently it was a take on F-body replacement.

That thing must torque steer something fierce.

I mean, really?
I still want it quite badly though, but wouldn't want to pay this 9rick any money whatsoever, lest he spends it on more meth and crack.

Still pretty lame. If it had been built on a Corsica I guess it would have been called Forsica.
