Volkswagen's Concept A coupe, say company execs, could show up in forecourts one day, though not before the company's had a couple years to think about whether the allroad-coupe market is sufficiently prime. Such a brilliantly useless car could be just the novelty the company needs to give it back the quirk mojo it's lost, having spent two decades producing sensible cars with personality only in relation to that their competitors lacked. Few remember the Volkswagens of old, or the devotion buyers lavished on them, despite a reverse gear whose presence was mere conjecture and horsepower that barely matched the power of an average horse. V-Dub needs that kind of devotion again, and maybe it'll be some wackpot like this that'll be the object.

<![CDATA[Volkswagen Gets All Crossed Over: Concept A to Premiere in Geneva]]>

VW says it's "the child of a new era," though it looks line of like a child of another one. The "it" in question is the Concept A, a cheetah-faced new design study Volkswagen will unveil at the Geneva show this year, which, according to the company, is a "fun machine and high everyday efficiency, a sports car with travel qualities, a coupe with station wagon features, a t-shirt in a world of casual knits" (we added that last part). The concept employs VW's new, 150 hp Twincharger engine hooked to a six-speed tranny and 4MOTION all-wheel-drive. (MVP award to Leftlane News for posting speed.)
