Thanks for posting the pictures, Murilee. I was beginning to think you'd forgotten about Colorado. I should have some more for you once summer starts in earnest and all the nice cars come out of storage.

Thanks also for all the positive comments. I'll have to give Mike (the owner of the Nova gasser) the url for this page.

Okay, a real Ford engine in a vintage Ford rod sounds great, but what is with those Y-Block decals on that small-block mill?

@Baron Plushroom von Falconpunchen: You must be fairly young- when I was a kid (early '80s) Subarus were everywhere- and, unlike today, probably only about 5% were owned by yuppie lesbians from Kennebunkport. The 4WD versions especially were seen as a viable alternative to the Yota pickup.

@SLANTTZILLA?: Well, if you didn't know my age before, you do now: I was born 'round the halfway point of the first Bush administration. Which would explain why '80s Escorts, Tempos (mainly the later models), Accords with pop-up headlights, late-'70s Ford trucks (saw a beautiful flatbed wrecker DOTS yesterday, but didn't have my camera) and second/third-gen Leones are firmly entrenched in my mind... but the truly cool stuff is nowhere to be found.

@Baron Plushroom von Falconpunchen: Slantzilla's right, they used to be everywhere in New England in the early '80s. I lost my virginity in a Subaru that looked just like that one, except it was light blue. Parked in the driveway of a summer cottage that had been closed up for the winter. Ahhh, memories.

It's true, though--very, very rarely do I see a Subaru older than 1995. I knew a guy in Virginia with a '94 Loyale wagon, and occasionally (very occasionally) I'll see a BRAT or a Justy pootin' around, but that's the extent of it.

I like the curled-up hood edge. It's a lot easier to preempt those problems with a 10-buck set of hoodpins than it is to pry open your hood with a tire-iron, trust me.

Great finds! But the VW bus--flames on the front and fish on the back? Are those supposed to be the flames of hell? Then he's on a highway to hell?

Not to mention that the color looks more like he splashed through a puddle of baby crap.

Love the color on the 31/32 Ford, though. Just perfect. And the T-bird--way back in 1961 someone craved--and got--a baby blue rocket!

Usually, decals on the car should say what good thing a car has. So why the FrontWheelDrive? I think the only one that's better than is OneWheelDrive or NoWheelDrive?

@Mobius_1: One has to bear in mind that there was once a time when front wheel drive was fairly odd. You had your Citroens, your SAABs, some Caddies and Olds Toronados, and then Subaru (which also came in 4WD). That was pretty much it until the Malaise Era wound down.

That said, I'm sure that the acquisition of such an emblem would cost an arm and a leg, if you can find one that someone is willing to part with at all. Few things will thrust a man deeper into the pit of despair that is Project Car Hell than a vintage (i.e., pre-EA81) Subaru.

Cool cars. Way better than Coors. And Colorado is another of those places that rust forgot about.

    BTW, that's a Microbus, not a Transporter.

I've always liked that era of Thunderbird, and this was a great find, but it looks like it's been crunched in the wrong way and might never be right..

The A using its license plate as a fender as a fender is just fantastic. 'I gotcher regulations all right here!'

And the lifted Nova wagon is tremendous. Looks like it'd do just fine on dirt roads up in the mountains.

I'm heading out the door, will have to check these out later. But having visited Colorado last year, I know its a DOTS paradise. And last weekend I think I found DOTS East: Richmond, Va. Couldn't wander off with my camera, as I was with my wife, but any Jalops in that area should get busy.
