It is VERY telling to me that so many "Gear Heads" judge a complete car design based on a single component, in this case a "Toyota Camry" V6 engine...
Us "Gear Heads" know better than the engineers at Lotus and Toyota that this appliance mill cannot be made into a "High Performance" engine worthy of a Lotus Chassis...
Facts are "Gear Heads" those Lotus and Toyota engineers do know what they are doing.. How many of these Toyota V6 engines have been produce.... for how long... and how far have these engines been Tweaked by after marketeers to x!x!Bhp without blowing up? How many of these "Gear Heads" who make these comments about a Toyota V6 Camary engine being a poop pile ever designed a successful, production worthy and proven reliable engine? Until these "Gear Heads" have hard proof and record of proven engine designs, they should refrain from judgment and comments are they simply do not have the credentials and real expertise.
It is also curious how "Gear Heads" have already made complete judgment of the Lotus Evora without ever seen one in real life or driven one...
Another example of how ingrained "Gear Head" prejudices trounced reality of any product and we know better than them attitude.
Oh, it's a Lotus, and we "Gear Head" know any Lotus cannot be reliable and they are fragile too. Better stay away from it. #lotusevora
@Rupunzell: Hey, I consider myself a hardcore gearhead and let me tell you that I am ABSOLUTELY ecstatic that they stuck a Camry engine in this thing.
Why?
1. That engine will have ungodly reliability. I have been praying to see reliable British sports cars for years.
2. Spare parts will be easy to find- and cheap! With literally millions of 2GR-FE's being produced for the Camry and no less than 19 other Toyota models, this may make the Evora the cheapest to maintain (6 cylinder or more) mid-engine sports car ever.
3. The 2GR-FE has six-bolt mains and a crank good for at least 800hp (Check the link in my other post). This thing can be tuned severely.
4. I bet you that outsourcing the engine to Toyota saved Lotus millions, and lowered the car's price by at least 15K per unit.
5. According to initial reviews, this car handles like a dream. [www.autocar.co.uk]#lotusevora
@LuciferV8:
You got this one on the BUTTON! That Toyota V6 is much more a ++++++ in every way. Basically un-bustable, reliable with lots of aftermarket parts available. Parts can be had at the local Toyota dealer if pressed.
This is precisely my point, those folks at Lotus & Toyota are no fools and know how to get the most from what they are working with ;)
Anyone remember how much moaning and groaning came from the Lotus engine folks when they were trying to make that Rover engine work well enough.
It's Evo Mag's COTY, if that means something. It's also very pretty and it's a Lotus first of all. But the only gripe I have is that the rumored Esprit replacement will have to be frighteningly expensive if the Evora's already $70,000+.
I'd be all over this. Puts that 40 year old Porch design in the shade. Besides, there will never be a tenth of these as 911's, so you've got the distinctiveness and exclusivity thing sewn up.
I look at this as Lotus' Cayenne. It's a relative porker with stunning performance, that will permit the company to continue producing the cars that are closer to its' spiritual home. Maybe they'll plow the profits back into an updated 7? #lotusevora
Ok, it not looks great, but it's amazing that the Evora almost weighs as much as a WRX, yet it gets a better 0-60 time and better fuel economy...That to me does not sound like a crack pipe, even though I wish it was lighter than it is. I would pick this over a GT-R, and definitely over a Porsche, because some one down the street doesn't have one of these! #lotusevora
The new Acura NSX is here - made by Lotus and powered by Toyota.
I hope to God it sells like hotcakes, as my heart is overflowing with resentment directed at Honda in its current form.
Nice price if you can get more ponies reliably out of that Camry mill they put in the thing. Plus, it will be way cheaper to maintain because of that engine:
Evora Owner: I need a Lotus Evora timing belt.
Parts Store Guy: (checks computer) No, we don't have that in stock, you might want to try the dealership.
Evora Owner: Well, can you find me the timing belt to the an 07' V6 Camry?
Parts Store Guy: (checks computer) We've got 10 of those. I can't help you on the Lotus though.
Evora Owner: You just did. One Camry belt please. #lotusevora
it's an oxymoron on four wheels. the goal of a lotus is to be as agile (and lightweight) as possible, the goal of a GT car to be comfortable for all occupants. a 2+2 coupe fits into neither category. this is as categorically confused as a jaguar XJR. pipe.
complete lack of purpose aside, it is a nice looking car, and judging by how successful the nissan GT-R is with the same goal (being a pocket rocket with rear seats when needed) at a similar price, some people may very well end up buying and loving it. i'd probably love it if i had a chance to drive it. i'll continue saying that a four-seat lotus is wrong, though. #lotusevora
Oxymoron or not, it was an awesome car in the handling department. Senna even commented as much at the time it was developed (he sorted the chassis for it). Performance wise, it was a bit of a slouch (180bhp, 0-60 in 5.6), even for a "special edition". The sound of that twin cam with Dellorto carbs was pure spine-tingling awesome though.
I own an Evo IX now, and while it "corners" harder and faster, it doesn't exactly "handle" as well. You could play with the limits in the Lotus, but it's hard to even find the limits are in the Evo.
The only "practical" Lotus (rear seat wise) would be the Carlton. 175mph rwd, 4 door car FTW. :D #lotusevora
@British_Looks_British_Reliabil...: Yup, and Ford really blew it when they abandoned their corporate vision, and stopped building the Model T.
I have to believe that the Evora will be light years better than the Elite II, Eclat and Excel. Except for the name, Evora is pretty dorky. #lotusevora
It looks bland. It has a bland Toyota motor and a agricultural Toyota diesel box. It's flawed in many ways, chief among them probably being questionable build and development. It's more expensive than an equivalent Porsche Boxster/Cayman.
meh.. this to me is a weird looking car. It just doesn't look right from any angle. The interior is pretty trick though, and you'll have just enough room in the back seat to haul around a pair of double amputees. The ONLY reason this is a "4 seater" is for insurance purposes. 2 more "seats" reduces premiums... #lotusevora
@KeyserSoze: I'm with you. The rear seats aren't useable for anything but storage and f'ing up the profile. This is the first Lotus in a long time that I don't want. #lotusevora

"The new 3.5-litre engine has a very strong bottom-end, with its six-bolt main steel crankshaft which we run unmodified," Mr Kittle said.
"The engine is pretty much bullet-proof, and our goal has been to make the power smooth and useable."
All systems go, baby. #lotusevora

Bargain.
Don't believe? Go watch the top gear review and get over the fact it has a Camry motor.

It also rides, steers and handles like a Lotus.
Bargain. #lotusevora
