They always bring us the ugly version. For fuck's sake, some of us don't need the goddamn third row and just want a good-looking, clever, and practical small hatch.
This is a good sign for Ford. Mini Vans have gotten hugely bloated with crappy gas mileage and barge-like driving characteristics. (Like every other car in the last 10 years)
The Mazda 5 is probably nearing the end of its current model's lifespan and I could see it fall off the lots then, so the C-Max may get to occupy the niche by itself.
Return of the truly minivan? If I remember correctly, the Mazda5 is still sold here and is a pretty descent car. Seats 6 with sliding doors, a manual, and good gas mileage.
@hike15: The Mazda5 is indeed a nice vehicle, but never got much traction in the US. I suspect Ford Corporate is going to stick Mazda more towards the sporty offerings while using Ford to offer the more mainstream/practical vehicles, such as this one.
Remember, the Mazda5 and C-Max will be fundamentally the same platform (Focus/Mazda3), so I don't imagine the corporate minions would allow such cannibalization.
I'm assuming the manual wont make it over, which is a shame. It'll be years before I'll have to consider a minivan, but a standard transmission would make it a lot more appealing.

I recommended this to them a few months ago! One of those details you're hiding better be that they're going to give us the manual like I requested. Oh Joy! I feel like singing!

My wife and I are trying to adopt a child right now and my wife has explicitly said that she wants something with a sliding door. In other words she wants a Honda Odyssey.
Or I should say that she "wanted" an Odyssey. One look at this and she has changed her mind. Grant you, we still have at least a year before we'll be buying something but I would much rather drive this than that damn Honda.
@SgtBeavis: If that dosen't work out, I here round these parts that Mazda makes some pretty killer small mpvs. Might be worth it to consiter it. Room may be a bit tight though.
@Pessimipposaurus: The Rondo and the Mazda5 haven't managed a combined 100,000 units over the last two model years. The demand just isn't there?
I hope there is another engine available - the 1.6 is supposed to haul a 7 passenger vehicle? I can't imagine the Ford engineers saying "The Mazda5 is pretty good, but it's engine is about 44% too damn big!"
@NiceNurseRatched: Mazda's problem is that they haven't promoted the Mazda 5 like they have the CX-5 & CX-7 vehicles. I really like my Mazda 5 Sport with the 5-speed manual, and would definitely buy the diesel version with 6-speed, AWD & 7 seats if only Mazda would offer it!

When do we get a Ranchero version?

But, frankly, I'm not sure if that's good or bad.

Besides, this could be the next best thing to having the Focus Wagon again.
