Now, don't go sending me a bunch of those "ZOMG where is this junkyard? I need them parts for my Rambler project!" emails, because I shot these photos a year ago and this proto-AMC long ago served as a tasty snack for the steel jaws of The Crusher, an appetizer for the main course of Tradesman vans and W126 Benzes. Instead, contemplate the temporary nature of life as you peruse this Server Hamster-Approved™ new-style gallery, which I'm hoping won't cause a blackout to descend upon the Eastern Seaboard the very first time a reader clicks on one of its images:

Holy crap! A Weather Eye!

<![CDATA[1947 Ferrari 166 Corsa Spyder: Oldest Complete Ferrari Mega-Gallery]]> This 1947 Ferrari 166 Corsa Spyder is one of the rarest cars in existence and also considered to be the oldest, completely original Ferrari. We've got 32 stunning, detailed images for you to drool over.

Currently owned by James Clark of Vancouver, Washington, this rare Ferrari was originally purchased in 1947 for $3800. Clark has spent numerous years restoring this Italian thoroughbred back to its original shine and in our humble opinion, has done an impeccable job.

This Ferrari 166 Corsa Spyder, serial number 004C, is the second Spyder Corsa built and it's been said that it's the fourth Ferrari ever constructed. You read that right — The fourth Ferrari. Ever. In total, eight Corsa Spyders were ever created, but this car is one of two that still have the original body in place.

Powered by a longitudinally, front mounted SOHC 2.0-liter V12 featuring two valves per cylinder and three Weber carbs. It produced a measly 110 horsepower @ 6000 rpm, but for the day it was one of the faster derby horses and really paved the way for modern day Ferrari V12s.

The 'Rossa Corsa' red body was formed in aluminum and laid down on a tubular steel frame suspended by double wishbone control arms with transverse semi-elliptic leaf springs and friction dampers in the front; while a live axle, semi-elliptic leaf springs and Houdaille friction dampers round out the rear suspension setup. At 1763 pounds, this early racer must not have been a screaming rocket, but with drum brakes at all four corners, we're sure it was about as scary as a rocket to drive.

Take a peek below to gander at some of the finer details of this rarer than rare Ferrari.

<![CDATA[Vintage Automotive Americana Caught By 35mm Lens]]> At Jalopnik we're obsessive with automotive culture both old and new, so when we came across this huge photo gallery of vintage automotive Americana from our friends at Yenko, we knew we had to share.

Like most of you, we remember falling in love with cars during our childhood while riding in the back of station wagons on vacations across the U.S. to obscure tourist spots in the middle of no where. We also remember falling in love with cars just by seeing them down on the street. In dealerships, parades, driving down the freeway — it doesn't matter much to us. We love cars just the way they are and this huge collection of vintage photos helps us to fall in love all over again. (Hat Tip To Robert!)

<![CDATA[Glory Days: Vintage, Pre-Carpocalypse Auto Dealerships]]> Do you remember the experience of visiting your friendly neighborhood Chevrolet dealership 50 years ago? No? Well, grab your hula hoops and check out our 60-picture gallery of the past below.

The good ol' days are gone, never to return again, but we've compiled a huge 60-image gallery, with the help of our friends at both Yenko and The Car Lounge, depicting the better days.

These were days when the bar was set so low, Fords were viewed as more dependable than any car and a Cadillac was something to aspire to. We miss those days. Although maybe that's got less to do with a real love of the era and more to do with the mind culling and removing painful negative imagery from thoughts of the past. Whatever the reason, join us in our idyllically over-idealized, idealized dream-like pictorial tribute to the great automotive dealerships of the halcyon days of yesteryear.

<![CDATA[Vintage Porsche 356 Racer Found In Mississippi Barn]]> Hiding in a partially collapsed lean-to in Mississippi, this vintage Porsche 356 racer tells no secrets besides what its roll cage evidently gives away.

It is a safe bet to say there is a lifetime of stories wrapped up in this Porsche found resting in a barn somewhere in Mississippi. With no proper documentation or previous owner spouting off his personal sagas, one can only guess what type of action this car has seen.

Estimates put the Porsche at a '53, but nothing is certain. Based on how high the bids have been chased up at this point, we can be relatively assured the next owner will put the proper amount of care into such a machine and return it to glory.

<![CDATA[2009 Dodge Challenger R/T Classic: More Stripes, More Muscle]]> The 2009 Dodge Challenger R/T Classic trim-level brings bigger stripes, functional hood scoops and a low-restriction exhaust to the Mopar muscle car, bringing the 5.7-liter HEMI up to 376 HP and 410 lb-ft of torque.

The R/T Classic couldn't be more classic if you were forced to drive around in it wearing an Afro. Slotted between the base Challenger R/T and the Challenger SRT8, the Classic is loaded with visual enhancements which include new paint, retro striping, egg-crate grille and classic R/T badging.

In the punch department, the R/T Classic still sports the 5.7-liter HEMI V-8 but gets a performance-tuned low restriction exhaust helping the engine put out 376 HP and 410 lb.-ft. of twist. This is good enough to propel the R/T and its groovy script to 60 MPH in less than six seconds. The 2009 Dodge Challenger R/T Classic starts at $34,005 (including $725 destination) and is available for ordering now at Dodge dealerships. Full details in the press release below.

Auburn Hills, Mich. , Jan 16, 2009 - The all-new 2009 Dodge Challenger delivers the best of modern American muscle-car characteristics—unmistakable design, world-class handling, powerful engines and technology. The all-new 2009 Dodge Challenger R/T Classic goes further with even more memorable blast-from-the-past design cues. The all-new 2009 Dodge Challenger R/T Classic starts at $34,005 (including $725 destination) and is available for ordering now at Dodge dealerships nationwide.

“Our all-new 2009 Dodge Challenger R/T Classic is more than a modern-day muscle machine, it pays homage to one of the most storied nameplates in automotive history,” said Dan Knott, Vice President—Car / Minivan / SRT Product Team, Chrysler LLC. “With heritage-inspired dual-wide body-side R/T stripes, original ‘Challenger’ heritage badging and the newest generation of our legendary 5.7-liter HEMI® V-8 engine, the new 2009 Dodge Challenger R/T Classic delivers the greatness of our pony car past with advanced fuel-efficient muscle.”

Based on the powerful 2009 Dodge Challenger R/T, the Dodge Challenger R/T Classic not only delivers a menacing look and premium equipment—its powertrain delivers an unforgettable punch. With dual throwback A-line body-side R/T stripes, ‘Challenger’ fender badging in classic script, large 20-inch polished-chrome heritage wheels with all-season performance tires, classic egg-crate grille with heritage ‘R/T’ badge, body-color rear spoiler and chromed fuel-filler door—the Dodge Challenger R/T Classic is unmistakable. “Dodge Challenger has a rich performance heritage and the 2009 Dodge Challenger R/T Classic encompasses numerous technologies that allow great on-road performance while delivering proven-quality and refinement to ensure its place in the Dodge pony car history,” said Knott.

The 2009 Dodge Challenger R/T Classic tucks its legendary 5.7-liter HEMI® V-8 engine under a long, raised performance hood with functional hood scoops to increase engine cooling. The newest generation 5.7-liter HEMI® V-8 engine features dual variable-cam timing (VCT) and dual ignition (two spark plugs per cylinder) to increase power and torque, while improving refinement and efficiency.

When paired with the Tremec six-speed manual transmission, the 2009 Dodge Challenger R/T Classic features the performance-minded Track Pak’s precision-shift “pistol-grip” shifter, bright pedals, Electronic Stability Program (ESP) with defeatable traction control, Hill Start Assist (HSA), four-wheel disc performance braking system and an anti-spin 3.92 differential. A performance-tuned dual exhaust optimizes engine back pressure and exhaust throatiness by replacing the standard under-floor muffler with two low-restriction bottle resonators. The result, a powerful 376 horsepower (280 kW) and 410 lb.-ft. of torque (556 N•m) that can accelerate the Dodge Challenger R/T Classic from zero to 60 mph in less than 6 seconds.

An available five-speed automatic transmission with Auto Stick provides efficiency and responsiveness in the 2009 Dodge Challenger R/T Classic. An aggressive first-gear ratio provides outstanding launch performance, while the transmission’s fully-adaptive electronic control delivers more responsiveness without harshness.

When paired with the automatic transmission, the new-generation 5.7-liter HEMI® V-8 includes the fuel-saving multi-displacement system (MDS) allowing Dodge Challenger R/T Classic to operate economically on four cylinders, or produce 372 horsepower (277 kW) and 401 lb.-ft. of torque (544 N•m) when all eight cylinders are needed.

On the interior, the trapezoidal theme of the door-panel cove and gauge cluster, dark headliner and slanted shifter console are inspired by the original Dodge Challenger. Inspiration from the past continues with a “four bomb” gauge cluster with deep easy-to-read white faces. Premium leather-trimmed bucket seats with heat are well-bolstered and finished with French-seamed stitching. The advanced uconnect gps with voice recognition, navigation with real-time traffic and Universal Customer Interface (UCI) is available on the Dodge Challenger R/T Classic.

The 2009 Dodge Challenger R/T Classic offers exceptional rear seating for a two-door coupe, achieving best-in-class rear head (37.4 inches) and leg (32.6 inches) room compared with the competition. Coupled with best-in-class cargo space (16.2 cu. ft.)—equal to the Dodge Charger—the all-new 2009 Dodge Challenger R/T Classic offers comfort and functionality.

The all-new 2009 Dodge Challenger R/T Classic is available in Brilliant Black Crystal Pearl, Bright Silver Metallic, Stone White and three Dodge heritage colors—HEMI® Orange, TorRed and B5 Blue. Dodge dealerships nationwide are now accepting orders for the all-new 2009 Dodge Challenger R/T Classic.

Production of the all-new 2009 Dodge Challenger R/T Classic will start in February 2009 at the Brampton Assembly plant in Brampton, Ontario, Canada. It will be built on the same assembly line as the award-winning and quality-proven Dodge Charger and Chrysler 300.

Lot Number: 114
Details: The Dale Earnhardt Jr. "Big Red" Silverado is based on the all-new, 2007 Chevy Silverado crew cab and features custom exterior appointments, an off-road-ready suspension, one-off custom 20" wheels at Dale Jr.'s request, a custom interior and more. This one-of-a-kind Silverado builds on Earnhardt's personal notion of off-road enjoyment, which was previously conveyed in his personal truck - a previous-generation Silverado named "Big Red." Earnhardt collaborated with GM designers on the truck, visiting the GM Design studio in Warren, Mich. to discuss the exterior and interior enhancements, which include all-new front-end sheet metal and rear fenders, as well as a "flying bridge"-type roll bar with integrated off-road driving lamps. The interior is as luxurious as the exterior is off-road-capable, with rich, black leather upholstery and other details. The Dale Earnhardt Jr. "Big Red" Silverado is powered by GM Powertrain's 6.2 Liter Gen IV V8 engine, a high-output, all-aluminum engine with variable valve timing that produces 380hp and 417 lb/ft of torque. It transfers its power to all four wheels via a Hydra-Matic 4-speed electronically controlled transmission. The front and rear axles are equipped with 3.73 gears and Eaton ELocker electronic locking differentials, which help the truck deliver exhilarating performance with tall off-road tires. Stopping power is enhanced with a set of Baer disc brakes, including six-piston calipers and 15" cross-drilled rotors in the front and twin-piston floating calipers with 13" cross-drilled rotors in the rear. It's a concept, and like the others, is not legal for driving on public roads.

Probably because this one's painted purple. Also, like the other vehicles sold by GM here at the big B-J, this ZR-1 is not road legal.
Day Sold: Tuesday, January 13, 2009
Sale Price*: $110,000.00

4.) 1997 Chevrolet Monte Carlo "Intimidator" Show Car

Lot Number: 83
Details: A NASCAR-inspired show car that offered a glimpse of the 2000 Chevrolet Monte Carlo styling. Features aggressive styling cues and performance-enhancing technology. We like how it's a "street legal" car being sold on a Scrap Title — because, like most of the others, it's not able to be legally driven on public roads.
Day Sold: Tuesday, January 13, 2009
Sale Price*: $148,500.00

3.) 1990 Chevrolet Corvette "Active" ZR-1 Prototype

Lot Number: 82
Details: This vehicle pioneered the advantages of "Active Suspension" and has GTP Corvette race car technology. Built at the Bowling Green Plant, this vehicle was developed as a prototype for a limited edition run in the 1990 model year. It may not be driven on public roads.
Day Sold: Tuesday, January 13, 2009
Sale Price*: $150,700.00

2.) 1989 Chevrolet Corvette ZR-1 "Snake Skinner"

Lot Number: 396.1
Details: One of 83 production 1989 ZR-1s built in Bowling Green. This experimental light weight was aimed directly at maintaining Corvette's performance supremacy. With a 475hp LT5 V8 and less weight, this vehicle is GM Performance legend. Sold on a Scrap Title. May not be driven on public roads.
Day Sold: Wednesday, January 14, 2009
Sale Price*: $176,000.0

1.) 1923 Oldsmobile Custom Touring Roadster

Lot Number: 397.2
Details: This Olds concept vehicle is powered by a 4.0 Liter DOHC V8 IMSA GTS-1 race engine with an automatic 4L60E transmission, Halibrand quick change 4.10 rear, 4-wheel independent suspension, rack & pinion power steering and Wilwood 4-wheel disc brakes. Also, because, like the rest, it's a GM concept, it's not legal for driving on public roads.
Day Sold: Wednesday, January 14, 2009
Sale Price*: $220,000.00

*Includes 10% Buyer's Premium

<![CDATA[Vintage VW Bug Gets Turbocharged V8, Probably One Of The Four Horsemen]]> We're not sure what makes this vintage Volkswagen more terrifying, the turbocharged V8 engine or the unconventional (for a Bug) engine placement. Either way, this car fulfills a few dreams and, likely, a few nightmares.

"Now I am become Death, the destroyer of worlds," was the phrase uttered by J. Robert Oppenheimer shortly after developing the atomic bomb. We can only hope he builder of this certain-death machine felt a similar emotion the first time he planted the progress pedal and rocketed himself into hot rodding lore.

Details are scarce, but we do know this street weapon is powered by a turbocharged 5.3 liter LSx-based engine. Taking the extra indie step forward, the fuel is managed by the beautifully homebrewed Megasquirt system. Die hard vintage VW fanatics will throw a rod when they notice very little original Bug remains, as it sits on a fully boxed one-off chassis with matching integral cage. Enough with the chatter — we'll let the pictures and video below do the talking.

<![CDATA[Another Massive Secret Vintage Junkyard Comes Under Fire]]> Situated in Kaufdorf, Switzerland exists a peaceful junkyard, holding over 500 classic machines hailing from the 1930s through the 1960s. The government wants it paved but locals want to preserve this history. Mega gallery inside.

Legend has it a car dealer, buying cars for parts, couldn't bring himself to scrap these beauties and began parking them in his yard. The dealer retired in the 70s, passing the business on to his son, who left the cars untouched. This scenic farm land location can be seen here.

As is the common plight of every forest junkyard, the Swiss government says the grounds must be cleared, paved and sealed to prevent fluids from seeping into the ground. Local crusader Heinrich Gartentor says rare trees and moss will be destroyed if the car graveyard is cleared, not to mention all of the steep automotive history that will be lost in the process.

The cars are agreeably too far gone for restoration, but the collection is arguably more thorough than most car museums. The current owner of the yard agrees to pave the area holding newer models, but refuses to disturb the vintage iron. We say keep fighting the good fight!

<![CDATA[Street-Legal Bumper Cars Are A Carnival Nightmare Come True]]> Gasoline-powered street-legal bumper cars are the perfect convergence of any car guy's adult and childhood fantasies. Now one San Diego mechanic is custom building a collection of gasoline-powered and completely street-legal (and registered) bumper car cars. He outfits the vintage shells with 750cc Kawasaki bike engines capable of doing more than simply bumping other real cars in real traffic.

<![CDATA[Kyberz Classic Is Sketchier Version of Lumeneo Smera]]> Okay, so the Lumeneo Smera, unfortunate name and all, seems like it's a fairly well put together and well engineered piece of kit — a little weird, but still okay. The Kyberz Classic on the other hand has us looking askance at its spindly MacPherson struts and thin little wagon wheel tires. If it was merely a conversation piece, we'd take amusement with the massively long windshield wiper arm, the cockpit which vaguely recalls an X-wing, and the rad motorcycle handlebars. Considering this may make it's way onto the occasional roadway makes the joke not so funny.

<![CDATA[Catch of the Day: Toyota HJ45 Diesel Troopy Land Crusier]]> Some good friends of ours decided to play "hoon and the hill" with our WRX this weekend. Translation: $1400 for a new clutch. That is sadly not the only financial reason we're not all over this righteous example of Toyota's fully realized Australian potential. A few quick facts: this Troopy is right hand drive, it seats 11 in bench seat comfort and someone dropped a diesel into it so the seller is claiming 20 mpg. Bidding is sitting at $12,000. Get it whiles its hot.

<![CDATA[Summer Cruising On Woodward Avenue: Chevy's Building The Camaro?]]>
We guess Chevy just enjoys preaching to the converted — it's our only explanation why we've now seen a car carrier driving up and down Woodward Avenue pre-Dream Cruise with a Chevy Camaro concept and a classy classic Camaro, closely followed by the above billboard truck twice in the past two days. The billboard shows the new Camaro along with the tagline:

"When you're really good in a past life, you come back as yourself."

Setting aside the obvious that this is proof positive of Chevy casting away to the wind the jesus-lovin' "American Revolution" tagline in favor of a tagline more inclusive of the Camaro's legions of hippie and liberal-leaning followers for a Buddhist dogmatic principles tagline of "A Circle of Life Revolution" — isn't this display truck kind of like signing (sic) to the choir? We mean, Woodward Avenue's lined each night before the Dream Cruise with thousands of auto enthusiasts — people who generally keep up with auto news. Do we not think they've allready heard the Camaro's back — or was this for the two people who haven't yet heard? Seems awfully pricey to us.

Why yes, we do believe there's more. Anyone want to play spot the classic car? Feel free to play in the comments...on this or any of the rest of the Woodward Cruising posts. Also remember to keep checking the mini-site as we get ready for the 2006 Woodward Dream Cruise next Saturday. We've got a whole team of Jalopniks storming the Cruise with cameras and videocams blazin'. We promise we'll own coverage of the classic cruise, and you won't want to miss an instant of it. That said, here's some more classic cars captured by our and our cohorts' cameras. And yes, today's letter is most definetly "C" — as in "Cruising Cars." [Thanks to AJ for the help!]

<![CDATA[Summer Cruising On Woodward Avenue: August 11, 2006 — Part I]]>
We're now one week away from the official day Metro Detroit's set aside for classic cruisin' — the 11th annual Woodward Dream Cruise. But like all good "sports," there's totally a need for practice. We headed out into the setting sunlight to witness some of the best and brightest classic cars we've seen down this stretch of asphalt since around this time last year. Although we spent way too much of the night racing down Woodward in a Dodge Ram 1500 Mega Cab, scaring the kiddies who weren't able to read the side of the truck and see that, yeah, it's got a HEMI, we did manage to capture some of the fun. Actually, there was so much classic car action on Woodward not only couldn't we keep up, but we've actually split last night's photos into a threesome of Detroit love. Here's the first of the series. Check back later today for the rest. As always, to follow our misadventures, keep hitting refresh on the Woodward Cruising mini-site, or for the geeks like us, drop the tag into your fave feed reader.

<![CDATA[Summer Cruising On Woodward Avenue: Friday, June 23, 2006]]>

It's Saturday — and another gorgeous day in Metro Detroit — and since last night was so nice out we sent Wert out again to take a quick cruise down Woodward Avenue and take a look at some of the metal goodness riding down Metro Detroit's famed central boulevard by which all other boulevards radiate. Wert got out there a wee bit late (we think he was spending a bit too long downing pints at Redcoat) — so he only caught a couple in his targeting reticule — but what he did catch looks gorgeous. Take a peek.

There certainly was some classic Detroit iron Friday night on Woodward — but it didn't stop there. Saturday night was just as nice — and we'd love to share it with you. We've got a quick picture gallery after the jump with the rest of the weekend's automotive ambience. So come and follow along as Jalopnik takes in the classic cruisers on Metro Detroit's Woodward Avenue. Remember to check back every weekend at our mini-site throughout the summer — or via the RSS feed.

<![CDATA[Masterpiece Theater: Muscle Car Edition]]>

Where would we be without YouTube and Google Videos' free interweb video goodness? While the free video sites are already home to some absolutely epic hoonage and amazingly detailed car reviews, they've now moved into an equally important niche in the auto experience...the television ad. And we're not talking just Kermit-the-frog and Corn-y Ethanol ads, but classic commercials advocating some of the best of the glory days of the automotive industry. So, until the free video sites begin allowing porn involving girls on cars, this'll have to do. Let's start with this...

...classic commercial for the 1970 Dodge Charger. This bit of "subdued" sex-sellin' is all about reminding us that we could be "Dodge material"...as long as we're willing to go for a four-some with three hot and sexy 70's Farah Fawcett types and leave our girlfriend behind in the dust. Count us in!
