    Wow. The Pallas ad is "2001" meets a Hummer ad--except I guess the Hummer ads actually stole the global/aerial view.

    My father had a Citroen Cx 3.0 V6 24 soupapes in burgundy. Beautiful car, but the electronics were incredibly crap and the car was serviced on a monthly basis.. My father really loved the car, but after 2 years of struggles, he sold it.

    @MarywithanM: as you were: Hey, don't forget this car also has headlights that light up, and the window, at least on the driver's side, apparently goes up AND down. Automatically, no less, because they took pains to show us that both his hands were on that loverly weird steering wheel. It also has brakes because he didn't hit a single horse. As far as I could tell.

    I saw my first XM in real life last weekend...it was purple/burgundy, beat up, and had a huge windshield crack. It was fighting traffic in downtown Guatemala City! I wish I had a camera, and time to talk to its loco owner.

    @Maxichamp: I used to walk past one every day on the way to work, back when I was living in Trondheim (Norway). There was also a Volvo 142 in the same carpark, down in Baklandet. I miss all the 'exotic' cars now I'm back in Aus.

    Many important things can be gleaned from this ad:


    -The Saab 9-5 was a ripoff of the Citroen Pallas profile.
    -The Pallas has a crazy-tight turning radius for a front driver.
    -The front window is rolled up by turning the steering wheel briskly to the left.
    -Ugly vinyl siding is not unique to North America.
    -France's wild horses have europunk haircuts.
    -Lazy-ass drivers aren't unique to North America either. Note the power armrest.
    -The sound guy wanted Carmina Burana 'O Fortuna' but didn't know what it was actually called and settled for this.
    -All the roads in France are dusty.

    Unbridled in its awesomeness. I am fast running out of reasons not to buy one of these before they are all buried or crushed for being too confusing.


    I can only assume that John Frankenheimer, director of Ronin was an XM fan, I can't think of any other reason for one to be featured in Ronin.

    @Rust-MyEnemyHasLostHisCommentingMoj...: All the cars in Ronin came out cooler than they went in,the A8 & the old 5 series all looked great being ragged around France. Not sure about the Peugeot 406's though?

    @Rust-MyEnemyHasLostHisCommentingMoj...: As someone who's never had a chance to see them in real life, it came across as fairly cool to me. I've long been fond of the 405 (the last French car to be sold in North America), so one that's marginally bigger, tinted, and loaded with unsavoury gun-weilding types is sort of automatically cool. Maybe not as cool as anything else in the movie, but those are high standards.

    @Maymar is convinced M.C. Escher engineered his car: The 406 was pretty lame,but it did look cool in Ronin & The Bourne Identity. Not so cool in Taxi.

    @layabout: I love the 405 Mi16. But you know, what makes a car great in a movie is not the fact that they are legitimately cool or fast in life, but whether or not you can believe the person driving them in the movie would actually drive that particular car under the circumstances. In Ronin, this made the car casting a win.


    Even in Quantum of Solace, the baddies drive Alfa sedans in the beginning, and given the setting, I can believe it. If I want to watch bad guys drive old Cutlass', I'll watch The Shield reruns. Now, QOS was a bit of a let down with the villiams driving Ford Flexi, but usually Bond movies give a glimpse at cars being used in public that aren't seen in the flesh in the US, and so did Ronin, really.


    Anyway, just my $0.02.

    @layabout: You think the varying geographical conditions are supposed to convey a great distance? No, the journey just took so long, the car's surroundings were significantly altered (also, seagulls evolved into horses).
