I think I've got to find a chassis to bolt that into.

Good news, I can probably skip a tranny. I reckon it's got enough torque to yank just about anything I might find off the line and keep on tugging right up to cruisin velocity.

Here's a video of a cutaway, with a soundtack to hear what it sounds like while flying. Not a bad sound at all. Does sound like a wasp kinda.

So, presumably you'd call this a radial.

    Right?

@Rust-MyEnemy Smells Of Mobil 1: I'm not positive about terminology, but I think an engine with multiple banks of cylinders, each complete with their own crankshaft, and connected by another gear driven common output shaft is called a "U" configuration. The baddest radial multi-cylinder engine is the Pratt & Whitney R-4360 Wasp Major used in big Boeing bombers before jet engines took over. It displaced 71.5 L and put out 3000 - 4300 HP.

I don't think the clip showed the engine operating up in its power band, or at WOT. Must have been pretty loud inside that can.

Well, that's one way to get more torque than you can ever use, but a long way from an elegant solution. I'm surprised it wasn't a Soviet solution.

You wouldn't want one of your timing chains to be a cog off. I'm glad I don't have to wrench on that, particularly in the confines of a tank! The exhaust sounds distinctly agricultural, so it just wouldn't fit into my plans.

@J-2-da-B: In that case it should mate right up to the trans, right?

Now that would make for some pulling power. Forget haling the Minuteman, this could hall the entire United States nuclear arsenal!

Is that a giant radiator sitting behind this behemoth?

And are all the carbs sitting up there at the top? Wouldn't that give different throttle responses due to the unequal intake runners, causing unbalanced power curves for each of the banks? So many questions. . .

@graverobber: 100% Shovel Ready!: As a matter of fact, the biggest hassle Chrysler faced with this engine was getting the crazy intake setup to work right.
