1970 Chrysler Newport

Welcome to Down On The Street, where we admire old vehicles found parked on the streets of the Island That Rust Forgot: Alameda, California. The "fuselage" early-70s Chrysler is pretty well represented in this series, with this '71 Newport and this '71 Newport Royal, but seeing yesterday's '70 Newport Royal ad made me decide to break out the photos of today's vast two-door luxury machine. The 1970-71 Chrysler C-body is actually one of my favorite Detroit body styles of all time (with the 1970 Chrysler 300 Hurst being the ultimate), and I've often considered leaving a "How much do you want?" note on today's DOTS car.

The Cars Of Death Race

UPDATE:We've now got the first Death Race trailer! Almost a year ago, I had the opportunity to head out to Montreal and go behind the scenes of the new re-visioned movie "Death Race" starring Jason Statham, Tyrese Gibson, Ian McShane and yes, Joan Allen. Whereas the names of the characters they play may be the same, the storyline's anything but — this time the "Death Race" is set in what we'd been told was an "economic" prison sometime in the not-so-distant dystopian future. But we'll throw down more of that later. The really cool part was getting a first-hand look at some of the metal made into prison inmates very own PCH cars — and there's some really cool stuff to be seen. So without further ado, below the jump are the ten vehicles at the center of the new Paul W.S. Anderson-directed flick coming to a theater near you August 22nd, 2008 — along with all the details on the add-ons that make them "special" plus, because you're so good, a whole mess-load of screenshots. Enjoy and remember, small children are only worth more points because they're harder to hit.

Starbucks Coffee Shop Takes A Chrysler 300 Break

Patrons at a Bellingham, Washington Starbucks got quite the surprise yesterday when a 2008 Chrysler 300 driven by an elderly man crashed through the floor to ceiling window and across the shop. Five people were injured in the incident, though none seriously, and the driver is facing a charge of second degree negligent driving. Fortunately for us, a table was embedded in the grille and it makes it look like the 300 is sticking it's tongue out. We're assuming the injured will be suing for millions to cover the cost of spilled coffee. (Hat tip to R_Evolution)

2011 Chrysler 300, Dodge Charger To Remain Rear-Wheel Drive, Get Makeover

It's no news that the 300's been a hit for Chrysler — and we here at the Jalop obviously are fans of the Dodge Charger SRT8, and the new Dodge Challenger's certainly got itself a purdy mouth. But there's potentially going to be some fuel economy issues inherent with a RWD, Hemi-powered platform given the current desire by Washington to focus toward beating up automakers and away from a more common-sensical Euro approach to increasing fuel economy. So you've seen the brief introduction to Chrysler's MyGig entertainment center and you've watched me get my hands dirty setting it all up, so what's the final verdict? Well, watch the talking head above and see. I am very happy to bear witness to Chrysler taking another step towards the future of car entertainment and infotainment centers—which amounts to simply slapping a complete PC into the dash. So which manufacturer wants to be the first to have a factory installed Windows- or OS X-powered machine that is completely open to customization? Any takers? I guess I'll just to do it myself.

Last week, I gave you a brief introduction to the Chrysler MyGig system in a 2008 300c Heritage Edition, and now I'm here to show how all of this hard drive mumbo-jumbo works. All in all, it's a really, really easy system to use. So easy I would be comfortable letting my grandmother attempt to save music to the hard drive. Stay tuned for part three when I give a final verdict, including putting on my favorite Negative Nancy hat.

Now that we've finished putting the Microsoft Sync system through the grinder, it's time to take a look at the MyGig system featured in a variety of Chrysler vehicles. To simplify, MyGig is a pretty standard infotainment center, but with a "ruggedized" hard drive slapped behind it. Chrysler 300C SRT-8 Touring: An Uberwagon for Europe

They haven't exactly been flying off the shelves here in Europe, but Chrysler is nonetheless adding American-style gumption to its 300C Touring, not leastwise to win it a leftward promotion on the unrestricted autobahn. Part of the company's bid to heighten the profile of its SRT performance division on the continent, Chrysler is introducing the 300C SRT-8 Touring — in left or right-hand drive — at this year's Geneva motor show. The wagon gets the full SRT treatment: 425-hp, 6.1-liter Hemi with 420 lb.-ft of torque, sport-tuned suspension and 20" alloys. [More pics after the jump.] More »
