    Top speed is only 130?

Numbnuts, shift the tranny into neutral and pour the coals on the turbine. If you can't break past 200 with 2000+ ponies in your tail, you're slumming.

Sure, like I want to go 140 MPH in a stock F150 with a load in the bed.

Now if he'd just couple the turbine shaft to a mechanical linkage to get that power to the wheels he'd have something..

This is why helicopter engines need to be used in vehicles and not jet turbines.

Not only can you still get flames and melt things behind you, but you can also use that power to push against the road.. which works better than pushing against the air behind you.

The automobile article mentioned that the jet won't see the full 2700HP until the intake air reaches a speed of 500mph+

It really needs at least some sort of intake snorkel.

Great for roasting marshmellows in the parking lot, but really underwhelming on road performance.

@Turboner: Yup. Strap a couple of RATO units to the bed and he'd have some serious motivation. Until he hits the end of the long stretch of straight highway that he finds out too late isn't long enough.

The 0-60 doesnt seem that bad for a jet engine. Look at those Top Gear Vids where the veyron or R10 race a Jet, in a 1/4 mile, theyll own the plane, anything above that and it starts to go heavily in favor of the jet once it really gets some steam.

@Corvette_Thunder- Muscle Milk Trans AM Series Fan: Yeah, but this thing doesn't appear to ever get some steam - 0-60 in 8.5 seconds, but then it takes another 36.5 seconds to accelerate up to 140, at which point, I guess it's so unstable or terrifying, that they just decided to give up. It sounds to me like the jet engine is, at best, carrying it's own weight. My guess would be a stock V8 powered Ford would at least be able to hit 130 in a similar amount of time.

@nataku83: Yes, wasted effort. At least he's not burning a huge amount of fuel while never achieving enough airflow to really build power (well, relatively).

I'd be impressed if he was actually able to generate 2,700hp... F-150 disintegration.

    That is... surprisingly slow, actually.

Then again, you generally don't take a jet engine to the drag strip. You head straight for the salt flats.

So, even with the jet engine going, it still took it 8.5 seconds to hit 60?

It certainly is an amusing novelty, though.

@pauljones: Well, but it hit 103mph in the 1/4, which isn't too shabby for a truck. I suspect it gets better the faster it goes.

Maybe they guy did dream too big on the size of the jet, but it's a lot cooler than the jet powered nothing that most of us have made! :)
