    I wish we'd start just calling them the driving lane and the passing lane. No one wants to drive in the slow lane, even if they're dead slow, so they all pile into the fast lane and go playground zone speeds.

    But still, passing someone at that speed is dead stupid anyway... if you tried that in Alberta it would mean certain death because the other driver would wait until you're 10ft behind them and then swing out into the passing lane without signalling. I've had to jam on my brakes a few times, even just passing at a 5-10kph difference because I swear some of these fools wait for a sporty looking car to come by and then block them at the last second. #autobahn

    When I was in Germany I saw this in action; and it was JUST like that--every once in awhile some rocket would shoot through at that speed--just mind boggling. I kept thinking how one idiot loafing in the left lane could create a horrible smash up. #autobahn

    @mechimike: Except in California, unfortunately. Always happens when I am late to work, some migrant worker with a truck full of leaf clippings and lawnmowers goes into the left lane going 45mph, causing everyone to jam on the brakes. #autobahn

    @Elhigh: I remember reading about how the old comic books of the 50s and 60s, Batman, Superman, and the like would reuse whole story lines about every 3-4 years. They figure in that time their readership and grown up and moved on to something else. Maybe this is the same thing. #autobahn

    Corvette production data is readily available--and a staggering majority of cars are ordered with the slushbox, somewhere north of 70 percent. So this guy is hardly in the minority--in fact, if you eliminated the automatic buyers, the Corvette would cease to exist altogether. A variation of the Porsche Cayenne effect, where the douchebags support the real enthusiasts. #gm

    problem is, however fast you're driving, after 30 minutes or so you'll have been caught up with by some guy sitting on your tailpipe, left indicator blinking (if he's polite) and main beams flashing if he's not. He'll pass you and head off into the distance (or at least try). Happens at 60, happens at 160.

    What's the most fun is doing VMax or whatever the conditions allow and then playing Romanian Truck Roulette. He's doing maybe 45-50 on a good day, there's a Dutchman towing a caravan closing on him at maybe 5mph, and the third lane is not on offer -as is often the case here- will he pull out? Will he wait? Has he seen me or is he enjoying a fine slice of Gouda while tlaking to the grandkids in the back of the car? Might not sound interesting , but can be a mtter of life or death. Yours!
