Now a parts shortage is further complicating the situation. GM had planned to run a double shift this Saturday at the Lordstown, OH plant that assembles the Cobalt and Pontiac G5, but at least one unidentified supplier has apparently been caught flat-footed and unable to meet demand. Cobalt sales have been up about 10% for the year, but fell 27% in August, a decline GM blames on supplier shortages. Presumably G5 production is also affected, but Aveo clone enthusiasts can rest comfortably knowing that plans for the Pontiac G3 remain in full swing. [Marketwatch]

<![CDATA[ Car Stereo Installer Must Be On Crack, Reports Customer For Being Same ]]> kevfederline.jpgNow let's say you're a car stereo installer in scenic Frederick, MD. We're going to go out on a limb and assume that your customer base is more than likely composed of 20-year-olds with chin strap beards and Pontiac G5s. Probably the kind of low-level drug dealers with just enough cash to afford a 20" subwoofer, but not to pay child support on their three kids. Would you alienate your entire demographic by calling the cops if you found a stash of drugs in a car you were working on? Although we wouldn't, we also realized 10 years ago baggy jeans and oversized wifebeaters weren't fashionable.

Unfortunately, we didn't install Kevin Doyle's stereo. Whoever did, found a stash of crack and called the cops. Upon returning to the car stereo / gold jewelry retail location, K-Doyle was detained by the police, who then found more crack in his pockets. K-Doy now faces charges for possession of and intent to distribute the drug. The only thing that surprised us more than the decision to turn the guy in was that there wasn't home-brew meth found as well. [via WJZ]

<![CDATA[ 2010 Chevy Cruze Shows Off Its Interior ]]> The next-gen Cobalt — whether you call it the 2010 Chevy Cobalt or the 2010 Chevy Cruze — is going to be an important vehicle for GM, meaning the interior is going to have to stand up to some stiff competition from other automakers. The spy shooters at AutoScoop have snagged the first really good interior images we've seen, showing off a strong three-pod gauge cluster and a steeply-raked center stack with audio controls below a recessed screen, not dissimilar from what they've been doing with those Opel-Saturn-Vauxhall cars as of late. There's also a collection of new exterior shots, though these 2010 Cobalt photos are a touch closer and more revealing.

These photos also show the car with the doors open, which makes us think the passengers bolted and started chasing down the photographers. Though the Coblat appears to be getting a major enhancement in the styling department, details about the platform and powertrain are limited. It would probably be safe to assume the popular Ecotec powertrain is going to remain in some version.

<![CDATA[ ATTENTION: Engines Do Not Need To Run In Reverse To Make Your Car Go In Reverse ]]>

This question was recently posted on CobaltSS.net, 20 pages of comments followed.

Reverse?
So we all know that the supercharged engines need the intake bypass valve so they work in reverse. Otherwise the supercharger would just suck all the air out of the cylinder. So knowing that, how does the turbocharged version work in reverse? The engine is trying to suck air backwards, yet the turbo wants to spin forward so I don't see how it works. Is there some sort of exhausting intake bypass valve on the turbo version? Also, if it does have the valve, does that also mean that it can make boost in reverse? Like how much boost? Like 5 psi or does it go over 20?

Can anyone help me sort this out?

Lord help him, he's just not that bright, is he? [CobaltSS.net] ]]>

<![CDATA[ 2010 Chevy Cobalt, Mostly Revealed ]]> It looks like the engineers working on the 2010 Chevy Cobalt have decided to ditch most of the non-paint camouflage and by doing so are now showing off most of the grille, headlights, tail-lights and greenhouse. This is it. This is very likely the new Cobalt. From the angles snapped by the swift photogs at KGP it looks like the new Cobalt is going to borrow some lines from the larger Chevy Malibu, which is a good place to start. This is abundantly clear in the all-but-revealed two-tier grille. This is the same platform set to underpin the Chevy Nubira, Volt and other vehicles. Full spy report below the jump.

Spy Report We just snapped the latest, and best shots yet of the car that looks to be the next Chevy Cobalt. A similar prototype has been shot in various guises, but never from all pertinent angles while uncovered—in full Chevrolet trim. The new Cobalt will utilize GM's new global compact vehicle architecture, and will be shared globally—reportedly being sold abroad in similar form as the Chevrolet Nubira and and the Daewoo Lancetti abroad. The platform is also pegged to underpin the next-generation Saturn Astra and even the Chevy Volt.

These latest shots give us a great taste of the further evolution of Chevrolet's two-tiered grille treatment, and the new Cobalt's chunky profile. The first-ever look at the Cobalt's largely undisguised tail treatment also reminds us of the recently revealed Opel Insignia, with its BMW-inspired raised trunk line and side sculpting. This new Cobalt is expected to appear in U.S. showrooms in 2010.

<![CDATA[ 2010 Chevy Cobalt ]]> A single, very clear and largely uncamoflaged image of what we assume to be the 2010 Chevrolet Cobalt has emerged from GM Inside News. This new photo seems to confirm some of the other heavily camo'd shots we've seen today, but this is by far a better image. The styling on the new Cobalt is extremely reminiscent of the 2008 Chevrolet Malibu, it just seems to have been left in the dryer a little too long. There's a larger version as well as some discussion about this new model below.

<![CDATA[ SEMA 2007: More Shots Of The Chevy Cobalt SS, Now With Engine Shots ]]> Oh look, it's the turbocharged 2.0-liter Ecotec referenced earlier today. Yay. Enjoy the open hood, boys. And remember, the Chevy Cobalt SS grille will be billet, not bar. GM PR wants us to clear up that misconception built from, you know, showing a car at SEMA that's the opposite of what the production version will look like.

<![CDATA[ 2009 Chevy Cobalt SS ]]> Looks like GM's bringing out yet another old mainstay to SEMA this year. Yup it's the 2008 Chevy Cobalt SS— yup, that's right — it's got an SS badge. Yay. Well, if we disregard the FWD platform and focus on the 2.0-liter turbocharged and intercooled Ecotec hitting 260 horses — we guess that extra 55 horses over the old n' busted supercharged Cobalt SS is something less to scoff at. The new Cobalt SuperSwervy's also got itself a short-throw shifter — only it's mated to the five-speed tranny rather than the new six-speed from the General. Altogether, while others may claim that added horsepower signifies a return to the SS badge "meaning something," we'll have to determine that in person with a test drive. Our best bet is it'll probably just make the torque steer all the more unbearable. Full press release after the jump.

TURBOCHARGED CHEVROLET COBALT SS GIVES A BOOST OF FUN TO THE COMPACT SEGMENT

LAS VEGAS - Celebrating the performance community that comprises SEMA, Chevrolet used the annual convention of all things high-performance to announce the 2008 Cobalt SS coupe. True to its legendary moniker, the Cobalt SS delivers a balance of track-proven performance capability, driving refinement and premium features - along with an undeniably fun and youthful character.

Developed by GM Performance Division (GMPD) and powered by a 260-horsepower (194 kW) turbocharged and intercooled 2.0L Ecotec engine, the Cobalt SS delivers 55 horses (41 kW) more than the previous Cobalt SS Supercharged, and its driving experience was validated on racetracks throughout North America and Europe, including Germany's legendary Nürburgring circuit.

"The Cobalt SS is the very essence of Chevrolet's fun spirit and serious performance," said Ed Peper, Chevrolet general manager. "The horsepower will put a permanent smile on your face and you'll find yourself wanting to turn around and zip through your favorite stretch of twisty roads again."

The Cobalt SS coupe arrives in dealerships in the second quarter of 2008. A Cobalt SS sedan, with all of the same high-performance features of the coupe, follows a couple of months later.

Maximum performance - on the street or track

The Cobalt SS was developed by GM Performance Division (GMPD), with a team of engineers and designers dedicated to crafting high-performance vehicles. It features powertrain and chassis enhancements that are similar to the new HHR SS, but with larger Brembo brakes, a slightly "taller" final-drive ratio and other variances that emphasize the Cobalt SS's pure performance ethic, as well as maximize its competitiveness on the track.

Engineered to offer more than merely a turbocharged rush of power, an all-new FE5 Sport suspension was developed and includes specific stabilizer bars, spring rates and damper tuning - all designed to complement the high-output turbocharged powertrain and mitigate afflictions such as torque steer. Driver-selectable modes help maximize performance whether on the street or track. The unique "no-lift shift" feature enables manual-transmission-equipped models to achieve the best acceleration time via an algorithm in the engine controller.

Ensuring the car stops as confidently as it accelerates and corners are four-wheel disc brakes with standard ABS. The front brakes are from Brembo and have a performance-oriented fixed-caliper design, which resist fade better than floating caliper designs; the rear discs are vented for better heat dissipation. Along with these high-performance attributes, the Cobalt SS comes standard with a host of safety features, including the StabiliTrak electronic stability control system and side-impact air bags.

With its balanced tuning, the Cobalt SS delivers a quick 0-60 time of approximately 5.7 seconds - thanks to the manual transmission's "no-lift shift" feature - and a sports car-like maximum lateral grip of 0.9 g. This combination enabled the Cobalt SS to set a new class record while circulating the famed Nürburgring racing circuit, posting a time of 8:22.85 minutes.

Unmistakable style

The Cobalt SS is distinguished on the exterior with several unique features, including a distinctive, air dam-style front fascia with integrated projector-beam fog lamps. The new fascia's grille and the Cobalt's upper grille sport a new, SS-specific diamond-mesh appearance.

SS-specific rockers and badging adorn the body sides, while a standard deck lid spoiler adds the requisite sporty touch to the rear of the car. The standard spoiler can be replaced with an optional high wing-style aero enhancement that gives the Cobalt SS the look of a racecar. Also at the rear is a prominent, bright-tip exhaust outlet.

Large, five-spoke 18-inch polished forged aluminum wheels and performance tires are standard and are tailored with the specific body enhancements to give the Cobalt SS a lower, performance-oriented stance - while also showing off the large Brembo front brake calipers. They're mounted on 225/40-series summer tires. Likewise, the available exterior colors enhance the sporty nature of the vehicle. They include Victory Red, Black, Ultra Silver Metallic, Imperial Blue, Rally Yellow, Sport Red Tintcoat and White.

Like the exterior, the interior is unique to the Cobalt SS, including SS-embroidered sport seats with suede-like UltraLux inserts, a specific gauge cluster, an A-pillar-mounted turbo boost gauge and a new shifter arrangement. Three interior color combinations are available: Ebony, Light Grey and Victory Red.
