An editor over at Cars.com, driving between Chicago and Detroit, noticed a bright blue 2010 Chevy Camaro RS just hanging out at a gas station outside of the Motor City. We're assuming the manufacturer-plated car is probably either an early pre-production model or from GM's captive test fleet. Either that or a cash-strapped GM decided to save money by not advertising the car's release and there are a bunch of them sitting at Chevy dealerships where they'll likely never be discovered. Probably not. [Kicking Tires]

<![CDATA[ Chevy Hits SEMA With Four Camaro Concepts And A Load Of Accessories ]]> In case you haven't seen the 2010 Chevy Camaro enough yet, GM is bringing four concept Camaros to SEMA this week, some of them actually interesting. The lineup includes the Camaro LS7 Concept (guess what that one's got under the hood), Camaro Dale Earnhardt Jr. Concept (yeah, we figured), Camaro Black Concept and the Camaro GS Racecar Concept, along with a GM Performance Parts car loaded to the gills with stuff you can buy for your Camaro — the one that won't be in your garage until at least next year. Let's take a closer look at this bevy of concepts for the official car of this year's SEMA show plus all the accessories. Hit the jump for all the details after perusing the galleries below.

Each one puts its own twist on the Camaro-to-come, with the Dale Jr. version going for a tawdry two-tone paint job, a NASCAR-style ducktail spoiler and big fat tires. The LS7 gets the best-of-the-best 6.2 Liter V8 with VVT and a dry-sump oiler. The interesting concepts (to us anyway) are the Black and the GS Racecar. The Black goes for a sinister appearance backed up by the new 300 HP V6, making it the choice for lurking about and handing the Fast and Furious crowd its handling lunch. The GS Racecar is actually an early prototype for the Grand Am Koni Challenge GS racing series and pays homage to Mark Donahue's '69 Trans Am race car with the iconic blue-and-yellow paint scheme. It's got the bits to back up the look too, with a fully seam-welded chassis, a complete roll cage, LS3 V8 and a Tremec 6060 six-speed, three-inch exhaust and race-prepped suspension. Tasty.

CAMARO STEALS THE SHOW WITH FOUR DISTINCTIVE CONCEPTS AT SEMA
* Camaro LS7 Concept – the spirit of COPO lives with a GM Performance Parts LS7 crate engine that delivers more than 500 hp
* Camaro Dale Earnhardt Jr. Concept – customized to Dale Jr.’s style
* Camaro Black Concept – a sinister-looking exercise in bold design
* Camaro GS Racecar Concept – an homage to a road racing legend

LAS VEGAS – Chevrolet introduces a quartet of stunning concepts based on the all-new, 2010 Camaro at the 2008 SEMA Show. The concepts join regular-production and accessorized models, along with a dream collection of vintage Camaros – including rare COPO, Indy Pace Car and early Z28 models – to mark the introduction of Chevy’s re-born sports car. The Camaro is the official car of the 2008 SEMA show.

Each of the concepts represents a different interpretation of the new Camaro’s performance, styling and personalization possibilities, from no-holds-barred high-performance to carefully crafted, street-savvy customizing.

“The new Camaro is a 21st century sports car for the young and young at heart,” said Ed Peper, GM North America vice president, Chevrolet. “Wherever your automotive passion lies, the Camaro complements it with world-class design and an exciting driving experience. The concepts unveiled at SEMA accentuate those qualities and trigger the imaginations of countless enthusiasts.”

In addition to the concept and classic Camaros, a production 2010 model showed off the range of appearance, performance and convenience accessories that will be available from Chevrolet when the car hits dealerships early next year. The accessories allow customers to personalize their vehicle with genuine Chevy components that are designed, tested and warranted to the same standards as the Camaro itself.

As for the Camaro concepts, they show the extreme possibilities of what the new sports car can offer. See below for highlights on all four vehicles.

Camaro LS7 Concept: Designed to highlight the capability of the new Camaro as a weekend bracket warrior, the Camaro LS7 Concept combines the power of a GM Performance Parts’ LS7 crate engine and targeted bolt-on upgrades to deliver the wheels-up spirit of the legendary COPO Camaros.

Made famous by Chevy dealers like Don Yenko and Fred Gibb in the late 1960s, the COPO cars were ordered for one thing: drag racing. They were quickly outfitted after delivery with the requisite tires, safety equipment and other accessories necessary for competition in popular Stock-class drag racing series.

The LS7 Concept honors the COPO ethos with features such as drag strip-ready rubber on the rear wheels – and unlike many of the stripped-down racers from 40 years ago, this strip-ready competitor serves double duty as both a racecar and a daily driver.

The LS7 crate engine (part number 17802397) uses a high-performance replacement camshaft from GM Performance Parts (part number 12480033) to help it produce approximately 550 horsepower. Complementing upgrades include GM Performance Parts-developed headers and air intake system that will be offered at the Camaro’s launch in early 2009. The LS7 also is modified with a wet-sump oiling system; the production engine features a dry-sump system that requires an external oil tank.

Backing the LS7 engine is a production Tremec 6060 six-speed manual with a GM Performance Parts Hurst shifter. Additional drivetrain details include:

* Brembo four-wheel disc brake package
* Lowered ride height
* Custom 20-inch wheels
* Driveshaft safety loop
* GM Performance Parts exhaust system

The Camaro LS7 concept is painted Victory Red, with matte black accents on the hood and taillamp panel. “LS7” logos are strategically placed and warn those in the know this Camaro means business when the Christmas tree lights count down to green. It’s all business on the spartan interior, too, with base trim and few accessories to minimize overall mass for a quicker elapsed time.

Although the Camaro LS7 Concept is just that – a concept – its duplication by enterprising enthusiasts and racers is enabled by GM Performance Parts’ LS7 crate engine package. It delivers a fully assembled, production version of the engine, complete from the intake manifold to oil pan. An oil reservoir for the standard dry sump system and GM Performance Parts’ LS7 engine controller (part number 19166567) are all that’s necessary to get the engine running in an enthusiast’s project vehicle – well, that and a chassis capable of handling more than 500 lb.-ft. of torque!

Camaro Dale Earnhardt Jr. Concept: NASCAR star Dale Jr. is fan of vintage Camaros – he cruises around in a Pro Touring-style ’72 Camaro powered by a GM Performance Parts LS crate engine – and the heritage-inspired design of the 2010 Camaro appeals to him like a checkered flag at Daytona. His vision for the car was channeled to GM’s designers and crafted in a multi-color combination of style, capability and comfort.

They started with a new Camaro SS that uses the standard 6.2L V-8, but modified to use E85. Taking advantage of E85’s favorable octane rating, the engine was calibrated to deliver a few extra horsepower, with the exhaust exiting through GM Performance Parts’ new headers. It’s backed by the SS’s available six-speed manual transmission and GM Accessories’ short-throw Hurst shifter. Additional performance enhancements include a Brembo brake package and a lowered ride height, giving Dale Jr.’s Camaro a sleeker look to match its road-hugging capability.

A custom gray-over-white paint scheme blends the high-performance drivetrain with serious style. It is accented with an orange stripe separating the gray and white sections. Also generating attention on the exterior is a set of 21-inch, five-spoke wheels inspired by the Camaro Convertible Concept. They feature dark-painted center sections on the spokes that complement the body’s gray color. The wheels are wrapped in Pirelli P-Zero ZR-rated performance tires.

Additional exterior details include:

* Chevy Accessories grille
* Chevy Accessories ground effects and rear diffuser
* Chevy Accessories exhaust system
* Early Camaro-style “dovetail” rear spoiler
* Production high-intensity discharge headlamps
* Production RS taillamps

Similarly, the interior is outfitted for performance and style, including:

* Custom-trimmed leather-and-suede-covered seats with accent stitching
* Leather-trimmed steering wheel, shift knob, door armrests and center console lid, with accent stitching
* Carbon-fiber treatment on the instrument panel and door panel inserts
* Racing-style aluminum pedals
* Production-optional four-pack auxiliary gauge cluster
* Revised gauge cluster with unique graphics and colors
* Custom sill plates

Dale Jr. also specified Chevy Accessories’ upgraded audio system for the Camaro, which is matched with a Boston Acoustics speaker system, including amps and subwoofers.

Camaro GS Racecar Concept: One of the most iconic cars of the legendary Trans Am road racing series was the distinctive blue-and-yellow Camaro of Mark Donohue. He was a dominant racer in the series and drove his #6 1969 model to the series championship that year.

With the assistance of GM’s High Performance Vehicle Operations, North Carolina-based Riley Technologies re-created the look and feel of that standout racecar with a tribute that looks, sounds and drives like it’s ready to do battle with its contemporary pony car competitors. In fact, the heritage-inspired racer is more than concept. It is an early prototype for the Grand Am Koni Challenge GS racing class. Racecars like the GS Concept are offered and manufactured by Riley Technologies for the 2009 Grand-Am season.

The GS Concept features the race-ready suspension, reinforced chassis and drivetrain conform to the specifications required of racecars certified for the series. In fact, this racecar has already logged many hours on the racetrack as Riley team members worked to dial-in the chassis and powertrain. Additional features include:

* Seam-welded production Camaro body-in-white
* Carbon fiber hood, trunk lid, doors and fenders
* Production LS3 V-8 engine (used with solid engine mounts)
* Tremec 6060 six-speed manual transmission with close-ratio gearing
* Three-inch exhaust system with Coast Fab mufflers
* C&R racing aluminum radiator
* Upgraded engine oil cooler
* Transmission and differential coolers

The GS Racecar Concept is shown at SEMA just as it was last driven off the track, with the grime, brake dust and body imperfections commensurate with a day’s worth of racing. Indeed, it isn’t a car that spent hundreds of hours in a body shop in a quest of sheet metal perfection. It displays the bruises of competition and wears them as badges of honor.

Like Donohue’s ’69 Camaro racecar, the GS Racecar Concept wears a deep blue paint scheme that is accented with yellow graphics, a yellow-painted interior and yellow racing wheels.

Camaro Black Concept: It’s hard to go unnoticed in a 2010 Camaro, but the Camaro Black Concept suggests a stealthy approach to street style. From its matte black-finished hood and ground effects to its dark wheels and red-glowing HID headlamp halo rings, the Camaro Black Concept is a sinister-looking urban tuner vehicle.

The Camaro Black Concept prowls the streets with the following equipment:

* Chevy Accessories ground effects package and rear diffuser
* High-intensity discharge headlamps with unique red “halo ring” color
* Revised, darker grille finish
* RS tail lamps with dark-tinted lenses
* Color-matched exterior badging
* SS-model spoiler
* Matte black hood finish
* Tinted glass
* Chevy Accessories 21-inch wheels with darkened finish
* Brembo four-wheel disc brake package

The interior also carries a slightly sinister ambience, with:

* Red LED instrument lighting and red footwell ambient lighting
* Black chrome trim accents
* Dark-finished accents, including the shift knob, radio face, steering wheel ring, gauge trim and door handles
* Custom sill plates
* Leather-covered seats with grey accent stitching

The Camaro Black Concept also features Chevy Accessories’ premium audio upgrade package, along with MTX speakers.

Under the hood is the production 3.6L V-6 that produces 300 horsepower. A Chevy Accessories engine cover provides a suitable accent.

CHEVY CAMARO GETS PERSONAL WITH FULL ARRAY OF ACCESSORIES AND PERFORMANCE PARTS
LAS VEGAS – The Chevy Camaro has always been a car that owners love to personalize. The all-new, 2010 Camaro carries on that tradition with a diverse lineup of accessories and performance components ready at launch.

Ranging from interior accessories and audio/electronic upgrades to exterior styling accessories, 21-inch wheel-and-tire kits and parts that enhance performance, the Camaro “add-on” portfolio offers something for every taste and budget. The accessories and performance parts can be ordered and installed at the dealership and, in some cases, their cost can be rolled into the vehicle’s financing for a seamless, one-stop personalization experience.

Camaro designers and engineers worked from the earliest stages of vehicle development to design, test and validate the accessories and performance parts to GM production-vehicle specifications. They are manufactured with production-quality materials, too, so customers are assured of original-equipment-quality parts with the best fit and finish for their Camaro. The performance parts are 50-state legal, for worry-free emissions compliance.

Here’s a look at the all-new portfolio of Camaro accessories and performance parts:

Interior trim kits – For Camaros equipped with the factory illumination package, Camaro’s accessory interior trim kits offer colors that enable owners to match or contrast the vehicle’s exterior color. They’re available in yellow, orange, white and silver.

Interior accessories – A variety of accessories bolster both the style and convenience of the Camaro’s cabin, while helping maintain its original condition. They include floor mats, sill plates and more. The deluxe carpeted floor mats feature embroidered Camaro logos, while the sill plates add a distinctive appearance and added protection when entering the car. A cargo-area floor mat, cargo net and a smoker’s package are also available.

Audio and electronics – Customers can take the Camaro’s technology to a higher level with upgraded audio and lighting systems, as well as remote starting. The upgraded audio system brings greater features and capability, while a peripheral device interface module allows portable players to play through the audio system. Remote starting brings the convenience of letting the vehicle heat up on a cold morning or cool down on a hot day. Also, Camaro’s accessory footwell and cupholder lighting kit delivers customizable, colored ambient lighting for a premium, high-tech interior appearance.

Car covers – Protecting the Camaro from the elements and UV rays is easy with custom-contoured car covers. They are designed to fit the Camaro’s contours and are available in red or black – each with stylish, heritage-inspired black stripes.

Exterior accessories – Customers can create a unique look for their Camaro with a diverse lineup of exterior accessories, from a grille insert and satin nickel fuel door to color-matched splash guards and a complete ground effects kit. And don’t forget to check out the stylish, wing-style rear spoiler.

The ground effects package creates a dramatic, ground-hugging look for the Camaro, and comes in a great, Metallic Grey color that accents the car’s original color. The wing-style rear spoiler complements the ground effects’ competition-ready appearance. All Camaro exterior accessories are designed and manufactured to the same quality and durability standards as regular-production components.

Stripe kits – The heritage-inspired 2010 Camaro is accented perfectly with accessory stripe kits. They give the Camaro a classic look and contemporary style. Available styles include hockey stick-style, hood and hockey stick-style and rally-style stripes in a variety of colors.

Wheels and tires – The 2010 Camaro comes with a family of attractive, 17-, 18- and 20-inch wheels, but Camaro enthusiasts can take it a step further with great-looking, racing-inspired 21-inch wheels and complementing performance tires. The wheel design features a contemporary split five-spoke center that is available in two finishes. The first is a black-painted finish and the other has a machined-aluminum finish with black accents. They are offered in an 8.5-inch width for V-6 models; and 8.5-inch front and 9.5-inch rear widths for SS models.

Center caps, chrome lug nuts and necessary tire pressure monitor sensors are available seperately. For convenience, complete kits of wheels, tires, center caps, lug nuts and pressure sensors are available.

Performance parts – GM Performance Parts (GMPP) designers and engineers worked with the Camaro engineers to develop emissions-legal bolt-on components that would accentuate and enhance overall performance.

GMPP developed air box, header and exhaust kits, as well as complementing short-throw shifters for manual-transmission applications. Also available are color-coordinated engine covers that add a dash of color-coordinated style under the hood.All the components are 50-state emissions legal, with CARB EO numbers where required.

Details of the performance parts include:

* Air box kits include an open-element, performance air filter for lower restriction and a great-looking, performance-style housing, with a chrome lid for a true tuner appearance. They’re available for V-6 and V-8 applications
* Exhaust kits upgrade the look and sound of the Camaro and are offered in quieter street-legal systems and off-road-only kits. Different applications are designed to work with or without the Camaro accessory ground effects package
* Headers enable exhaust gases to be carried away from the engine quicker, boosting the engine’s airflow efficiency and overall performance. GMPP’s bolt-on header kit for V-8 engines is emissions-legal and a simple bolt-in replacement for the factory exhaust manifolds. Match them with one of GMPP’s exhaust kits for even greater performance
* Short-throw shifter. A greater feeling of control comes with a precise, quick-acting shifter, and GMPP’s kits for both V-6 and V-8 models deliver sharper and quicker throws between gears. They were developed with legendary shifter manufacturer Hurst, so they complement great performance with classic styling
* Engine cover kits give the Camaro’s V-6 and V-8 engines a stylish, show-quality upgrade. They’re available to match most exterior colors, allowing customers to complement or contrast the color to suit individual style. They are easy to install and don’t interfere with oil fill or other common maintenance access points

<![CDATA[ Chevy-Sponsored Camaro Black Heading For SEMA Show Floor ]]> Chevy has released a single teaser-style image of their 2008 SEMA show-bound Camaro Black, described only as "a dark and mysterious interpreta." We're pretty sure they meant "interpretation" but ran into character limitations in their imaging software. Regardless, the Camaro Black show car actually looks to be a gunmetal gray based on the photo and appears decked out with a sinister-looking body kit and the requisite SEMA monster alloy wheels shod in low-profile rubber. The red glow from the headlights may also indicate some sort of LED illumination kit, but what you see is all we know at this point; we'll either get a constant dribble of teasers a-la 2010 Mustang or just bring you the goods from the Vegas show floor in two weeks.

<![CDATA[ Bumblebee's Tarted-Up Camaro Body Spotted Clearly On Transformers 2 Set ]]> We're already the first to have shown you Bumblebee's newly tarted-up aftermarket look (and again showing off that very newish nose and with Shia ), and now we're getting some better shots of his muscularly-modded bod sitting on the Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen set at White Sands Holloman AFB. We already know the look isn't any production trim level Chevy will be offering on the new Chevy Camaro, and thank goodness because it's certainly "special" looking. And — umm — that's really all there is to say about that. If you're interested, Transformers Live has some more galleries of some of the other vehicles (Optimus Prime, Ratchet and Ironhide) over there.

<![CDATA[ New Chevy Camaro SS Revealed, Officially And Underwhelmingly, At 2008 IndyBash ]]> While we're excited for the 2010 Chevy Camaro SS, the reveal yesterday was rather undramatic, taking place at an event held at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway called the 2008 IndyBash. Yeah, and as expected, it was filled with all sorts of surprises — like — um, OK, so there weren't any surprises. What should we expect from the reveal of the "SS" version of what may quite possibly be the most over-exposed and vehicle in the history of the automobile? Not much, wethinks. So, on that level, the reveal met expectations. But, if you're interested in seeing the car up close — again — for the umpteenth time — check out the gallery below. Many thanks to the folks at the Camaro5 forum for snapping all of them for your viewing pleasure.

<![CDATA[ 2010 Camaro SS, 2009 Corvette ZR1 Play Together On Track In An Orgy Of Horsepower ]]> This is the first time we've seen both the 2010 Camaro SS and the 2009 Corvette ZR1 sharing track time, though the video leaves us a bit confused. Yes, the two look great together, and the V8 soundtrack isn't too bad either...except we only get to hear each of the cars sing solo. We were expecting to hear a roaring duet of muscle, but the audio has suspiciously been cut from those scenes. And, is it just us, or have some portions of the video been blatantly sped up? <![CDATA[ Torque Meter Toast For Production Chevy Camaro Gauge Cluster ]]> One of the more intriguing features of the concept version of the new Chevy Camaro's interior was the "torque meter" on the four-gauge instrument cluster. Unfortunately, according to Popular Mechanics and now confirmed in a photo taken by Xeper, a forum fan-boy over at GMInsideNews, it's a feature that won't be making it from concept to 2010 Chevy Camaro production accessory.

Popular Mechanics' Ben Stewart made the claim first in his review of the pre-production Camaro concept last month:

"The optional console mount gauges on Camaros we've seen before have included a "torque meter." This, we thought, was an odd choice for this valuable real estate. Well, apparently the engineers thought so too. Both prototypes had transmission temperature gauges in place of the torque meter. [Engineering Program Manager Anthony] McCormack says the torque meter is history."

We can see from the shot up top the four gauges in the cluster are now oil pressure, oil temperature, transmission temperature and what appears to be a voltometer. All along we'd assumed the torque meter was basically just a measurement of RPM and acceleration — just like many OBDII-plug-in tools — but by actually including it as a gauge was to us, a very cool idea. Unfortunately, it appears that cool idea won't be making it all the way to production. [Popular Mechanics, GMInsideNews]

<![CDATA[ New Transformers 2 Video Captures Chevy Volt, Corvette Centennial Concept, Fanboy Commentary ]]> This new video may not be the clearest shot we've seen of the 2010 Chevy Volt, Corvette Centennial Concept, or any of the other GM product-placement-bots on the set of Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen, but what it does bring to the table is behind-the-scenes commentary from real fanboys. The Transformers geeks inform us that Bumblebee, also known as "that muthafuka riiight there," is "the shiiit." You just can't get this kind of insight anywhere else. <![CDATA[ 2010 Chevy Camaro SS, Officially Unveiled...Sort Of ]]> That's right folks —never mind the ad supplement, or the leaked pictures — now the first official press photo — or press rendering, we guess — of the new Chevrolet Camaro SS was just revealed on GM's Media site. We can't seem to find any other press release or official documentation accompanying it. But whatevs, we're just pleased as punch Chevy finally showed us what the new up-powered Camaro with the 6.2-liter V8 engine. <![CDATA[ The Making Of The First Photo Of Detroit's Muscle Car Threesome ]]>
Getting the first photo of all three of Detroit's new muscle cars was no easy task — taking time, hard work and more than a little luck. Want to see what transpired? The folks from Garage419 showed up to create the above "behind the scenes" video showing just how it was done. We'd also like to point out while the PR folks on the ground weren't very happy with us showing up with the competition, the GM and Chevy brand PR teams back in Detroit found the stunt humorous and took it in good stride. We give them a lot of credit for doing so. And why not? It ended up making it all across the auto enthusiast online world, with even Motor Trend picking up on the story — although they seem a little bit baffled by how it all happened. But whatever. Enough words, hit the play button above! (Hat tip to Craig Lieberman, Garage419 and Ned!)

<![CDATA[ Unofficial 2010 Chevrolet Camaro SS Pictures ]]> We're expecting official images of the ever-pending 2010 Chevy Camaro SS any day now, but the various photo shoots ahead of that day have yielded at least one gallery of good ones. An AutoInsane reader managed to get into a shoot and take some really great photos of the latest Chevy super sport. As we saw when Fergie showed off the Camaro SS, it looks a lot like the concept but with some real rearview mirrors and actual badging.

With the Ford Mustang GT500 and its thousands of variations, the reborn Dodge Challenger (now in SRT8 flavor), and the recently unveiled Chevy Camaro all vying for eyes, there won't be enough Calvin-peeing-on-competitor decals to go around. Though the conclusion is left up in the air, Scott still provides an amusing simile while comparing the Ford to Chuck Norris with a Bowflex. [Detroit News]

<![CDATA[ CNBC's "Saving General Motors" Is... Actually Quite Good ]]> Saving General Motors CNBCCNBC's gone inside GM for a one-hour documentary called "Saving General Motors," airing next Wednesday, August 6th at 9 PM and defying expectations, put together a rather compelling hour of television for the auto-obsessed. The documentary of course spends time on the bad, but also on success stories for the big 'merican automaker — the new Chevy Malibu, the new Chevy Silverado, the new Cadillac CTS and Buick in China as well as potential success stories like the new Chevy Camaro (and of course, Dale Earnhardt, Jr. taking the Camaro around the track — as well as some great behind-the-scenes footage of the making of Chevy's new hotness) and the Chevy Volt.

It'll also focus on profiling some of the General's big names — Rick Wagoner, Bob Lutz, Ed Welburn and of course, GM lifer and UAW hourly worker Warren Kennedy. Good ol' Warren. We've seen an advance copy of the show and it's an engaging watch for the automotive-obsessed. Highlights include CNBC car stud Phil LeBeau interviewing Bob Lutz at the GM Heritage Center and hearing him speak with candor about the craptastic quality issues of the previous generation of GM products. Oh, and we get to see Lutz in a flight suit. Hot! Want to see some clips? Hit CNBC's site and then check out the full show on Wednesday. [CNBC]

<![CDATA[ 2010 Chevy Camaro: From Concept To Reality ]]> The most striking feature of the unveil of the new Camaro was how strikingly similar the 2010 Chevy Camaro is to the Camaro Concept. We enlisted the help of GM designer Jeff Perkins, who worked extensively on the new muscle car, to help us with the magnifying glass and determine what those changes were. Hit the jump as Jeff guides us through sort of virtual walk-around, pointing out each of the individual tweaks and changes the designers made to bring the concept to production.

The New Camaro's Front

2010-Camaro-FrontTotal.jpg"Our philosophy from day one was [to capture] the essence and philosophy of the first-generation Camaro, but with modern execution and modern materials and modern fit-and-finish. From a design standpoint, we want the Camaro faithful to recognize and love it, but we also want to have a new generation love the car for the way it is, without a history lesson." — Perkins

The New Camaro's Rear

2010-Camaro-RearTotal.jpg"We call the shape "coke bottle" and the car has a lot of that coke bottle shape to it. You'll see this especially where the door intersects the rear quarter panel. And you can see how far the wheels go out in both the production car and concept car." — Perkins

The Camaro's Interior

2010-Camaro-InteriorTotal.jpg"The overall philosophy was to have this straightforward, wide sports car interior piece. We wanted to play up the deep-dish steering wheel and play up the gauges, while making sure the shifter is highlighted. It's about showcasing these components that we think are strong. The overall shape of the interior is really very similar to the concept. We did have changes for safety requirements; kneebags have to be in a certain zone and you have to get airbags in. When we showed the concept car the feedback we got was really strong and our word from Ed Welburn and Bob Lutz was that we need to do the concept car." — Perkins

Also, we highly suggest you check out Automobile Magazine's sit-down with Cheryl Pilcher, Camaro product manager. It's a good read.

<![CDATA[ Video: New Camaro Playing Sweet V8-Powered Music On Main Street ]]> No, you didn't read that wrong. Our sources tell us those idling sounds you hear in the above video received anonymously from one of our tipsters (who we're still waiting for an e-mail back from!) aren't coming from a plain-Jane direct-inject 3.6-liter V6 engine. Nope, apparently the new Chevy Camaro painted hot rod red shown to journalists in Metro Detroit last night had either the big 6.2-liter LS3 V8 and its whopping 422 HP. That's enough power to take the Camaro SS around Germany's famed Nurburgring with a time of 8:20. How do we know it was the LS3 and not the new Active Fuel Managed L99 V8 with the same displacement? Well, this particular Camaro's got a manual transmission. So yes friends, this is the 2010 Chevy Camaro SS — dressed up as a 2010 Chevy Camaro RS. Yeah baby, it's a sleeper! Nice. Also, see if you can spot Jalopnik's fearless leader for some bonus points.

Built on GM's new, global rear-wheel-drive architecture, the Camaro is offered in V-6-powered LS and LT models, as well as the V-8-powered SS. All models and powertrain combinations include fuel-saving six-speed transmissions.
"Camaro delivers all of the things that make Chevrolet such a revered, global brand," said Ed Peper, GM North America vice president, Chevrolet. "It competes with the world's best sports cars and does so with styling, fuel economy and value our competitors simply can't match."
Advanced powertrain technologies, including engines with direct injection and Active Fuel Management, enable a satisfying balance of exhilarating performance and good fuel economy.
"The new Chevrolet Camaro delivers a thoroughly modern, advanced package of performance, comfort and technology," said Peper. "It's a sports car for a new generation of enthusiasts that doesn't forget the heritage that helped make the original a cultural icon . That is no small feat and it took a worldwide commitment to achieve it."
Indeed, the 2010 Camaro exemplifies GM's global development process. Design details
With a design that is very faithful to the original concept, the 2010 Camaro is a 21 st century sports car that acknowledges its heritage. A long front dash-to-axle and short rear deck give the Camaro classic proportions, while a sleek windshield profile, wheels pushed to the corners and muscular fender forms are modern elements that reinforce its advanced engineering - and give the car a decidedly aggressive stance.
Elements such as a forward-V shape at the front of the car and "gills" in the rear quarter panels are distinctly Camaro cues, as are the broad rear fender "shoulders." Those elements make the new Camaro instantly recognizable, but their execution is smoothly integrated into the contemporary exterior form. A family of large, 18-, 19- and 20-inch wheels also contributes to the Camaro's modern appearance.
"The new Camaro is just that - new," said Ed Welburn, vice president of GM Global Design. "We acknowledge the nameplate's strong heritage in the design, but recognize that keeping this modern sports car relevant meant more than simply honoring a classic car. The line forms, stance and overall execution are consistent with other new Chevrolets."
A well-executed balance of heritage, modern design and attention to detail also characterizes the Camaro's interior. A pair of deeply recessed instrument binnacles that feature round gauges in square housings is a nod to classic Camaros, while an available ambient light package offers advanced LED light pipe technology to give the cabin a distinctive and inviting glow. Cloth upholstery is standard; heated leather-appointed seats are available.
Details such as large, chrome-trimmed controls, low-gloss surfaces and premium fabric or acrylic appliqués convey a richness that is unprecedented in previous Camaro models - and challenge its contemporary competitors. More great detail is evidenced in the available center-console gauge cluster, which takes its cue from a similar option on 1969 Camaros. It displays oil temperature, oil pressure, state-of-battery and transmission fluid temperature, all highlighted with modern LED backlighting.
Powertrains
An advanced, efficient 3.6L direct-injected V-6 with variable valve timing is standard on LS and LT models. Direct injection technology helps the engine deliver more power through increased efficiency, while maintaining fuel economy and lowering emissions. That means less fuel is consumed and lower emissions generated - including a 25-percent drop in cold-start hydrocarbon emissions.
The Camaro's 3.6L engine also employs variable valve timing to optimize performance and fuel economy across the rpm range. It is rated at an estimated 300 horsepower (224 kW) and 273 lb.-ft. of torque (370 Nm). A six-speed manual transmission is standard with the 3.6L engine; a Hydra-Matic 6L50 electronically controlled six-speed automatic, with TAPshift control, is available.
The high-performance Camaro SS is equipped with a powerful 6.2L V-8, with a choice of a six-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmission. Standard, manual transmission-equipped models receive the LS3 engine, estimated at 422 horsepower (315 kW) and 408 lb.-ft. of torque (553 Nm). The LS3 debuted on the 2008 Corvette and uses high-flow cylinder heads based on the Corvette Z06's LS7 engine to enable great low-end torque and high-rpm power. It is paired with a TR6060 six-speed transmission.
A new, L99 V-8 engine is used on automatic transmission-equipped SS models. It is based on the LS3 and carries all of its high-performance design features, but also includes GM's fuel-saving Active Fuel Management feature. It enables the engine to run on only four cylinders during light-load driving conditions, such as highway cruising, to improve fuel economy. The V-8 is estimated at 400 horsepower (299 kW) and 395 lb.-ft. of torque (535 Nm); and it is matched with a Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed transmission. This combination delivers an estimated 23 mpg on the highway.
Body structure and chassis
The 2010 Camaro is built on GM's global rear-wheel-drive architecture, with a strong body structure that enhances safety, quietness and handling. World-class build quality and attention to detail are enabled by features including one-piece body side stampings and very precise tolerances between body panels.
Front and rear independent suspensions are mounted to the rigid chassis, including a multi-link strut arrangement in the front with a direct-acting stabilizer bar and a double ball-joint configuration; and a unique, 4.5-link rear suspension that is double-isolated from the chassis for smoother, quieter driving experience.
Camaro offers two suspensions. LS and LT models receive an FE2 (sport) suspension, while the SS receives the FE3 (performance) suspension, including a lower ride height. Each is tuned to match the performance capabilities of their respective powertrains, as are their wheel-and-tire combinations.
A variable-rate rack-and-pinion power steering system mounts the rack forward of the front axle, for more direct action, an enhanced feeling of driver feedback and better weight balance.
Brakes and chassis control
Four-wheel disc brakes with ABS are standard on all models. LS and LT models receive single-piston calipers all around, with mass-reducing aluminum rear calipers. SS models have larger rotors that are acted upon by four-piston, aluminum Brembo calipers at all four corners. They are designed to stand up to the severe use encountered on road-race tracks, delivering excellent feedback and pedal feel, as well as fade-resistant performance during racing.
GM's StabilTrak electronic stability control system is standard and incorporates traction control. The system on SS models includes Competitive/Sport mode that is adjustable for performance driving, such as on a racetrack; it also includes a Launch Control feature on SS models with the manual transmission. It enables quicker, more consistent takeoffs during performance driving.
Safety
Designed to protect occupants before, during and after a crash, the Camaro offers a comprehensive system of safety features - starting with a robust body structure and integral safety cage around the passenger compartment. High-strength steel and ultra high-strength steel are used in key areas throughout the structure.
Safety technologies integrated in the Camaro include:
• Driver and front-passenger dual-stage air bags
• Dual-stage Air Bags —
• Dual-stage air bags are designed to inflate at high speed in serious crashes,
• but deploy with less force in minor-to-moderate crashes. The air bag system's
• sensors determined the severity of the crash, signaling the appropriate
• deployment speed.
• Driver and front-passenger seat-mounted thorax side-impact air bags
• Head curtain side-impact air bags for front and rear seat occupants
• Front seat safety belt load limiters and pre-tensioners
The front passenger detection system
Front Passenger Detection System —
To avert potential injury risk from high-pressure airbag inflation,
the front passenger detection system will suppress air bag
deployment if a child or person of small stature is sensed
sitting on the passenger seat. It also senses the presence
of a child restraint on the seat, and will suppress airbag
deployment accordingly.
The detection system uses a mat sensor embedded
in the passenger seat that establishes the occupant's
weight and weight distribution. If this is below a certain
level, the sensor alerts the SDM central control unit and
the front passenger airbag will not deploy.
senses children and small-stature adults and suppresses air bag deployment when appropriate.
Standard OnStar service assists after a crash. With OnStar's Advanced Crash Response System, the vehicle automatically sends a signal to OnStar for assistance, even if the air bags don't deploy.

<![CDATA[ Dale Earnhardt Takes The New Camaro Sideways With CNBC On Secret Aussie Test Track ]]> While yesterday gave us our first look at the un-camouflaged new Chevy Camaro, who knew CNBC's Phil LeBeau had a scoop that'd put our blow-the-top-off coverage of Chevy's new muscle car to shame with the mullet-wearing demographic? He's got NASCAR star-of-stars Dale Earnhardt, Jr. ripping the new 2010 Chevy Camaro sideways through a secret test track somewhere in the Aussie outback in this new video over at CNBC. Though the 2010 Camaro is still wearing some serious body camo cladding, we're totally loving the screechingly good music coming from those rear tires. However, we'll try to ignore that "body roll" comment, because perhaps Dale just doesn't know that drive impressions are probably embargoed for sometime next year. Well, whatever. By the way, we've got a whole mess of new shots of the new Chevy Camaro RS below — now looking yellow, red and silver — so pick your color pleasure. [CNBC via Camaro5]

<![CDATA[ Production 2010 Chevy Camaro Revealed! ]]> This is it. The 2010 Chevy Camaro, revealed in all its glory. According to details we've been told by the folks breaking the embargo, the new Chevy Camaro will come in LS, LT and SS (yes, we know there's a badge there that says "RS")— and be available in either 6-speed manual or auto flavors. Under the hood, a 296 HP 3.6-liter V6 or a 416 HP 6.2-liter V8 with cylinder deactivation. And check out that interior — looks very muscular to us. Weight? How about 3,747 lb — lighter than the Challenger. Full details below the jump. UPDATE: Now we've got even more pictures!

Here's what we're told from the folks at CarTribe:

The Camaro will come in LS, LT and full-on SS specs and be available with 6-speed manual and auto transmissions. Under the bonnet sit fuel-efficient 296bhp 3.6-liter V6 and 416bhp 6.2-liter V8 engines, which can run on fewer cylinders to improve economy.

It shouldn't just be a burnout king either, handling should be pretty good thanks to an all-independent suspension setup and a StabiliTrak stability control system. 4-pot Brembo brakes front and rear shed the speed on the SS. Weight balance is split 52/48 front/rear too, but the Camaro is a porker, weighing in at more than 1,700kgs.

The interior gets cool LED lighting, leather seats on posher models and dials and gauges inspired by 1969 Camaros. The US gets the car in early 2009, while we'll get it some time after that. Super.

<![CDATA[ Woman Drives 1970 Camaro Over One Million Miles, Thumbs Nose At Volvo ]]> Emma Ely bought her baby blue 1970 Chevy Camaro SS 350 38 years ago and has driven it daily ever since. As a result, she's racked up 1,104,000 miles on the odometer and counting — a number so high, the odo has rolled over to start at zero more than once.

The engine, transmission and rear end are all original and have never required major overhaul. The 72-year-old Ely chalks up the car's longevity to regular oil changes at 3,000 miles and careful attention to any maintenance issues. We chalk it up to a 1970 split bumper Camaro being driven by an old lady as being totally awesome. Check out the short interview at a CBS affiliate via the link below. (Hat tip to Michael!) <![CDATA[ 2010 Chevy Camaro Showing Off Best Shots Yet Of DI V6 Engine? ]]> You may have been thinking General Motors has timed their muscle car revival all wrong, what with the 2010 Chevy Camaro coming out just as gas hits $51 per gallon. But see that's just what they want — to make driving this car an indulgence. And why wouldn't it be? Especially as it now appears that although the V8-engined 2010 Camaro SS may be getting all the attention, the V6 is going to pack quite a punch as well. These new shots from the forum fan-boys looking beyond the F-body at Camaro5 give us the clearest look yet under the hood of the six-cylinder model. But this does not appear to be your grandpa's engine.

Look closely at the throttle-body size and shape and the bolts holding it on, the three fluid reservoirs in the same locations, all cues that this is indeed the glorious direct-injection V6. That means about 300 HP, the same sort of power Ford gets from the V8 Mustang GT. And look, they've even moved the battery out of the engine bay, likely mounting it in the trunk like the Pontiac G8. All in all it looks like just the thing for the indulgence-minded muscle car buyer.

<![CDATA[ The New Chevy Camaro Can Make A Soundgasmic Video At The Nürburgring Too ]]> We know you've seen the 2010 Chevy Camaro plenty of times by now, but trust us, you haven't heard it quite like this. It must be the fanboys at Camaro5's response to Lexus trying to steal the spy video thunder with the LF-A video from earlier. Because thunder is exactly what the Camaro's big 'merican V8 sounds like as it races around the famed German track. The video is over six minutes of rumbling goodness, so you might want to let it load a bit before watching. Ooh, and look, a Pontiac G8 GXP was there too.
