@Mad_Science: I reckon he meant the jacked-up 3/4 ton Tahoe (which is an unextended Suburban, after all). Certainly not the jacked-up off-roading Colorado wagon.
Not really surprising, the Chinese are hugely into Symbolism; they got tired of merely owning the U.S. treasury (ok, 30% of the treasury bond market...) so they had to go for something a bit more showy. I'm sure many chinese would also see this deal as a major loss of face for Uncle Sam.
Glad my bunker is built, my guns are clean and ammo is plenty. ;)
As it was said. WOLVERINES! Except it would be BADGERS! for us Wisconsin residents, but that just doesn't have the fearful "We are going to kick your ass" sound.
from what i hear their ladies and "ladies" already possess the the ability to 'make' the best 'hummers' in the world...... so we might as well let them have the name...
GM will still sell light duty trucks and SUVs under GMC and Chevy (most likely) which are what the H2 & H3 are built off of.... so...i don't see the harm in selling off a bunch of metal/plastic forming tooling/machines and a licensed name... they'll (hopefully profit) and maybe the same dumbasses will still buy them... and slowly weed out the species through lead poisoning and unfortunate railroad crossings with a 49cc engine in a 3 ton vehicle..
i need to shut up now before i get any worse... wow... why didn't someone tell me...
If typical Changfeng build quality will be the mainstay of the new Hummer, we have nothing to fear. Between panel gaps big enough to poke the snout of your automatic, and the ubiquitous Changfeng 49cc engine providing the motivation, the new Hummer will be no match for a seven year old girl with a slingshot, let alone an American serviceman.
Not that we're about to go toe-to-toe with the Chinese anyway. And why would we? They're busy poisoning themselves, entirely too fully engrossed in their own problems to spoil for a fight.
I find it hard to believe that, out of 4 billion Chinese, no one has pointed out what a dumb idea this is. That's a whole lot of people with their hands in their pockets, rocking on their heels, whistling and not making eye contact.
@graverobber- Facebook 'em Danno: 4 billion chinese? Where are the extra three billion coming from? Are they hiding? Waiting to attack!? OH DEAR GOD WE ARE OUTNUMBERED!
@creamed_corn: They've successfully infiltrated our dry cleaners, our nail salons, our all-you-can-eat buffets, our water supply, and all of San Francisco.
Shh, there's some spying on you from inside the Internets as we speak!
If John Milius (reputed to be the inspiration for the Big Lebowski's Walter Sobchak) is reading this post, his computer is about to enter a world of pain!
I'm confused. Isn't the HUMVEE made by AM General, an offshoot of what was once American Motors, or am I getting my historical data all discombobulated? I thought "Hummer" was a licensing agreement between GM and AMG.
@timtoolman: AFAIK, you're bang-on correct. The HMMWV, or whatever the hell it was, the Hum-vee, was the successor to the Jeep, back when Jeep was still part of AMC; when Chrysler bought AMC, they didn't get the military arm, and AMGeneral licensed the HUMMER name to GM. To my knowledge, the "H1", the civvy Hum-Vee, is still made by AMGeneral.

Did I miss a meeting? I wasn't aware that war with China was in the immediate future plans...

H1 was a lighter-duty HMMWV.
H2 is part Tahoe/Yukon with 3/4 ton running gear and a locking differential
H3 is parts-bin with 4:1 transfer case and locking diffs front and rear.
They're silly vehicles marketed to douchebags, but there was some actual engineering work put into making them better offroad.

"Hummer" is a brand applied to GM parts-bin SUVs and a sold-under-license light-duty HMMWV, which is already made by AM General.
(H1...which they stopped selling).
There are no Hummer-specific plants, as they're the same ones used to build GM SUVs, right?
I suppose all the Hummer Merchandise is all made in China, so I guess that makes sense.
