I think we need to make a Jalopnik Playlist. As long as that's on it, along with "King of the Road" (our current theme song) and "Bitchin' Camaro", I'll be happy.

I really don't see how the city will ever turn around. What's even worse, are the people who squat in these houses I really feel for them. As a ex-Detroit who's living in exile in the suburbs I wish I could help these people.

...oh, that sort of drive-by.

not only is there not a single car on that street but there are no people, pets, trash cans or anything else indicative of civilization. You can't really see any evidence of wildlife either.
Makes me wonder when Will Smith will appear with a set of golf clubs and a big, fancy truck with anti-zombie gear all over it.
There do seem to be several properties listed for $1 and touted as "investment properties". One looks like a ravine full of garbage.
This one is listed as having "loads of potential" and needing "some work". It can be yours for a mere $50!
Or you can grab this gem for $50 also:
It has "fire damage".
hey, I guess that's the first PHH on Jalopnik, huh? PHH being the Project House from Hell.

They definately wouldnt want me there.
Id cover the property with Accords, Civics and Fits.. all the while living in DEEETROIT.
Poor bastards.
Ive always wanted.. to just see what DEEEtroit is all about.
Now its like.. No thx.

Fit's still bolted together in Asia, though. For what that's worth.

Hmmm
LOL, thank you so much for pointing out the factories. And I thought I was the only one who lived and died by reciting the Honda factories for US. Ya missed the one in Alabama.
But I was referring to having my beloved cars assulted by bastards in that damn state / city.

As for you slurs against Michigan, why would I listen to someone who calls me and my neighbors nasty names?
Besides, California will be bankrupt before GM. Michigan is actually one of the most fiscally prudent states, 43rd in terms of budget gap, 29th in terms of dollar size of the deficit. Michigan owes $617 million, New York owes $15 billion and California owes $36 billion.
When you consider that there are 4 times the number of homes in foreclosure in California as their are in Michigan and that the dollar value decline in property values in California is much higher, it's likely that Californians have more debt, public and private, than folks in Michigan do including the domestic automakers.

I had to look up the plants outside of Ohio, but I'd memorized Marysville and East Liberty. Works both ways, too - it's fun reminding domestic fanboys that Joe Average's Accord was built in Ohio, and it's fun telling import snobs that they're really driving an American car!
I knew what you meant, though. The culture up there, from what I understand, is incredible... and not the good sort of incredible.
This is nitroracer's car. (Beautiful HO 5.0/T5 Panther, by the way.) I'm posting the image because of where it is, not what it is.

California has 36,553,215 residents (2007 estimate), Michigan 10,003,422 (2008 est.), New York 19,297,729 (again, 2007 est.). I found these figures on Wikipedia, but they originate here.
Considering these numbers, it's clear that in terms of government deficit, Michigan's in a much better position. However, Michigan is not far ahead of California in terms of home foreclosures, since California has 3.65 times the population of Michigan.

Hmmmm
Not to mention...
Your own mayor has been indicted for inapproporiate behavior through work devices: TRANSLATION...
He was texting this woman (subordinate) at his office filthy comments.. that in part were shown as part of a series by the DETROIT NEWS.
Not to mention...
Detroit has had a slew of mayors who have done the city wrong.
On top of..
The downtown area is decimated. There was a grocery store but I heard they pulled out. There isnt even a Target in the downtown areas.
On top of..
Ive been following the decline of DEEETROIT for going on 10yrs. You people have been in a recession for the past 15yrs. Ya losing ya tax base. Ya losing suppliers.
Ya losing workers. Ya losing the backbone of the home construction industry.
Shit
I bet everything outside of Grosse Point and Auburn Hills is shitty... that and the suburbs.
DEEETROIT is a horrible filthy rotten place to live.. and that was before the domestics TOOK A SMASH!
And you are comparing that to CALIFORNIA?!
The highest selling homes are out there.
They at least have the entertainment industry, where somehow the world of automobiles and the domestic car industry is only pertinant to people like me.. and most of us in here.. who are obsessed with the auto industry.
And as long as Ive had the LATIMES emailed to me daily..
No one is in worse shape than DETROIT / Michigan.
Not CALIFORNIA, not even flood ravaged New Orleans.

Hmmmm...
I live in downtown Detroit, walk to my grocery store, walk to school (and home... at 3am!) and can walk to Ford Field, the Ren Center (GM), COBO, etc. Sure, I have to drive to Target, but it's not that big of a deal- I've gone to Target maybe twice in the last year. And the only major metro area that I've seen that has a Target in its downtown is Chicago. It's not exactly something that's key to survival.
Sure, there's some rough areas around it, but my area's gotten considerably better since I moved there a year ago. I've seen museums, apartments, and trees go up. I'm hoping more retail follows and they continue to tear down the old buildings to make way for new. It's pretty rough around the edges, but just know that there are people who are working to make it better, it just takes time and strategy. And unfortunately, we don't have a bunch of rich, self-righteous movie stars to guide us to the light.

In other words, the lot is worth more than the asking price of the house--so if someone can make money on the demo, they're in the black.

Of course, there's also less buildings now...on account of them all...burning...down. Crikey.
