We all know the Chevy Cavalier. You may also remember Toyota sold a badge-engineered platform prostitute version in the Japanese Domestic Market that was built by GM. But — did you know you could actually buy a Toyota emblem from a GM dealership with a valid GM part number? We assumed we could. But intrepid souls at Automobile actually went and did it. What they found was the Toyota logo comes in a beautiful plastic poly bag. Feel free to keep it as a collector's item. Oh, they also found the same logo from a Toyota dealership costs between $2 and $10 more. Hmm. Maybe they add magic super number one best automaker from the land of the rising sun pixie dust to it or something. [Automobile]

<![CDATA[ The Vintage Chevrolet Club Of America Shows Off Rain-Soaked Detroit Iron In Seattle ]]> When commenter of the super-stars, Startlton_Heston, offered up some photos from the Lee Johnson Chevrolet 75th Anniversary Car Show we assumed there would be a dozen or so photos to throw into a gallery. Little did we know, although we probably should have assumed, Mr. Heston was insane enough (in the best way) to send us more than one hundred lovingly taken photos detailing 69 years of Chevy metal. Being Seattle, the VCCA meet was a little rainy. A report from the Omega Man as well as some more photos below the jump.

Imagine my excitement, driving to Lee Johnson Chevrolet's 75th Anniversary Car Show, coming around the bend and laying eyes upon a confusing yet rousing and mystical sight. They lined the cars up on the front row by the street?? That's more then I expected! 30's to late 60's Chevys braving the elements (rain in Seattle? NEVER!) and showing off their wax jobs. Not by the usual standard of bling and shine, but here it's a measure of your water beads! There were about 32 cars in all, members of the three North Western chapters of the VCCA (Vintage Chevrolet Club of America).

Most were unhappy about the rain but as a conversation went:
Me: "I'm amazed and excited that the cars are still out! In SoCal, it clouds up and everyone scatters like cockroaches!!"
VCCA member: "Well if we did that, there wouldn't be any cars shows!"

Thanks for the bravery!

Car notes:
Nova 400 Conv. sadly no 400 in it... BOO!! flat 6 with 180HP I believe
75 Caprice had a real 400 with a Malaise 150HP.... HOW was that all the power it had? Sad, but the car looked so cruisable!
53 Vette is number 125 of only 300 made

Thanks for the shots, they'll have to rip that camera out of your cold dead hands! ]]>

<![CDATA[ The Hot 1984 Cavalier, With Bonus 80s Pornstache Poll! ]]> We've totally changed our minds about the Cavalier since we saw Xarg's '85 wagon do so well at Thunderhill. But still, one can't help but notice the weird mashup of 70s disco sleaze with 80s pastel cheeze in this ad for the hot, hot, hot '84 Cavalier... particularly as seen in the extra-manly dude's mustache. And that's why we need a poll to decide if this ad stacks up with a couple of other sleaze/cheeze 'staches of the era...

<![CDATA[ Google Street View Makes Phoenix Look Dangerous ]]> We're beginning to wonder if Google Street View is somehow causing these accidents. We saw the awesome Audi Q7 versus Range Rover upside-down cake near the Phoenix Country Club a couple of weeks ago. Now we're seeing another one a mere 2.7 miles away. "That's crazy talk!" you say. Nope, there's definitely a case to be made. While the country club crackup was decidedly expensive, this one is a bit more low-rent. Underneath the blazing Arizona sun (which apparently destroyed the front camera element), this Chevrolet Cavalier took a dirt nap after being T-boned by an S-10. You can barely make out the high build quality of the Cav because it's hidden behind the wrinkled roof and the driver still chilling out in the passenger seat. We're also enjoying the "WTF?" look on the burly cop's face when he notices the camera car. [Google Street View]

<![CDATA[ Jalopnik Commenter's Cavalier Wagon Comes In 9th At Thunderhill! ]]> Looking at the top teams of the 24 Hours of LeMons race last weekend, we thought it was great that a Detroit car finished in second place. Of course, Neons make great race cars, so no huge surprise there... but what about an '85 Chevrolet Cavalier wagon finishing in the Top Ten? That's not a typo- a Cavalier finished ninth! Better still, one of the team members is our own commenter Xargs, who was justifiably disappointed that I didn't get any shots of his car at the Altamont LeMons event a few months back.

84-Before-1.jpg
Xargs sent in some "before" photos of the car- does that look like a dominating race car?

84-Before-2.jpg
It turns out that a torquey V6 and front-wheel drive do pretty well at the racetrack; this car was contending at Altamont, too, but a tractor tire-versus-oil pan conflict knocked it out of the running at that race. Team Two Wheels Too Many relocated the radiator to the rear of the car, but otherwise it's pretty close to stock.

<![CDATA[ Wagons Ho! More LeMons Action Ahead! ]]> Just because the race is over doesn't mean we're done showing you the racers and vehicles of the Thunderhill 24 Hours of LeMons race. This is definitely Jalopnik-approved racing- where else would you see a couple of Volvo wagons duking it out with a Chevy Cavalier wagon for a shot at 800 pounds of nickels? Stay tuned for closeup portraits of some of the more interesting cars we saw at the event. And LeMons team members: send your accounts, photos, and videos to me (murilee at jalopnik dot com) and we'll share them with the world!

<![CDATA[ 1984 Cavalier: An Interior That Comforts Your Very Soul! ]]> Is it possible that one day we'll all realize we were wrong about the Cavalier? That it was actually a great car and not just another one of Detroit's lethargic responses to the invasion from the East? Time will tell. Well, maybe it already has, but in the meantime we can enjoy the incredible 80s-ness of this fine advertisement.

<![CDATA[ 1953 Packard Cavalier ]]>

Today we'll be looking at one of several Packards that still roam Alameda's streets. I'm not sure what it is about Packards in this town, but up until a the early 90s there was a shop downtown that specialized in Packard repair and referred to itself as a Packard dealer, so apparently there's a hard core of Packardheads on the island.

53_Packard_LH_Frt_Qtr.jpg

And why not? This is a helluva good-looking car.

53_Packard_Fin_Detail.jpg

The Cavalier for '53 came with a 327-cube straight-8 that purred out a respectable 180 horses. This one packs the two-speed Ultramatic automatic. Now there's a good transmission name!

53_Packard_Frt_Med.jpg

As has happened with a couple of other cars I've photographed for this series, the owner (in this case, the owner's daughter) came out and offered to sell me the car, which drives just fine. Tempting... very tempting!

53_Packard_Interior.jpg

The interior is still in pretty good shape.

53_Packard_LH_Rr_Qtr.jpg

I'm pretty sure nobody is going to confuse this car with the 80s GM product with the same name.

53_Packard_Swan.jpg

The list price of the '53 Cavalier was $3234. For comparison's sake, the entry-level '53 Ford sedan sold for $1743 and a '53 Jaguar Mark VII went for $4170.

53_Packard_AAA_Decal.jpg

The trim details are just gorgeous; the Cavalier was a respectably high-end car in its day.

53_Packard_LH_Fin_Side.jpg

Packard was pretty much done after the '56 model year, although some rebadged Studebakers were sold as Packards for the '57 and '58 model years. It's a shame they joined the long list of American carmakers to downward-spiral into oblivion in the postwar era.

<![CDATA[ What To Do With A Broken Hoonmobile? ]]>

Brought to you by the same Canadian hoons who built the amazing Platform Pontiac, this creek-jumping Chevy Cavalier pulls off some pretty decent hoonage. But it's what these hoons do to the car after they break the rear suspension that really gets them HOTD honors. Remember when you'd stuff M80s in your model cars? Crack open a bottle of your favorite Canadian brew and make the jump...

Ahh, nothing like having your own farm and (apparently) a permit to buy serious explosives. We can only look on with envy.

<![CDATA[ 90 Screaming Horsepower: The '81 Vauxhall Cavalier ]]>
Just like its Chevrolet sibling of the same name, the early-80s Vauxhall Cavalier seemed a bit on the sluggish and uninspiring side; I mean, we're talking double-digit horsepower and front-wheel-drive. But, according to this ad, the Cavalier was an unparalleled engineering achievement. You be the judge.
