I have to say, "Cars" was the movie that gave the final impetus to the plan for me and my girlfriend to buy a drop-top Corvair, fly out to San Diego to pick it up, and drive back across America on Rt 66. Awesome trip, and I'll always love that movie.
I, too, am not a huge fan of Larry the Cable Guy, but I've been fooled into liking other animated characters that were voiced by far worse celebrities.
Try to tell me that Dory wasn't the best character in Finding Nemo.
Cars was a great film. I am looking forward to the sequel.
Damn everybody, it is not as if Larry as Mater is doing stand-up bits in the "Cars" local comedy club. He's the character's voice. I thought he did a great job, and was a great choice, as Mater.
@leavethegun-takethecannoli: Mater said "git 'er done" during the final tie-breaker race when Lightning McQueen was spun around by Chick Hicks and caught back up to him in reverse. If you remeber, Mater taught McQueen how to drive backwards. Probably the most cartoony part of the whole movie because no car in the world has a reverse gear that goes to 180 MPH.
@Lord Pferdestärke the 357th: I've lived down South for a pretty long time and Larry the Cable guy is commonly viewed as just a fake persona around here. Especially given that he's from Nebraska.
I honestly think he has more success BECAUSE most people outside this region actually think he's a good representation of a redneck or something. Like Cletus from the Simpsons--it's overdone for effect. My $0.02.
@Ash78: Well, that's why I don't think he's that funny. Most of his "jokes" are just exploitations of stereotypes that people that live in other parts of the country (and Canada) believe are true.
@Lord Pferdestärke the 357th: I guess the analogy would be a white guy doing a Chris Rock-esque routine. Now why would that be offensive, but some guy who apparently has no clue that the South has changed a mite since the 1840's spouting the shite that he does is not?
Sorry, his commercials are on all the damn time now, sine his shtick is coming soon to a venue near me.
nothing wrong with LtCG, maybe we need a few more people like him who are not afraid to speak their mind. being politically correct is the problem these days. used to be people could take a joke, now its I'm calling my lawyer or the ACLU.
@mcryder: Not to carry it too far, but Larry was preceded by Foxworthy (obviously) with the same basic act, and as far as "pushing the norms," 1980s standup had it all over most of the current mainstream stuff--Pryor, Hicks, Murphy, Kinison, Carlin, etc. I sort of see Larry as like a Disney version of off-color comedy. I don't think we're really suffering from overly PC comedy.
Though, Jim Gaffigan is about as good as it gets, and pretty much PG-13 at most. Good exception to the usual.
I don't like that guy's schtick or persona in real life, but Mater is definitely a great character.
Although I am still pissed that the 911 was given a female persona. My 4-y-o nephew now associates all 911s with being girls. Oh, well, maybe it'll save him some money in the long run. Or he'll become a dragon. Whatev.
@Ash78: Yup, Larry the Cable guy and his "git-er-done" act can die in a fiery wreck along with the rest of the blue collar comedy tour, but Tater is indeed a great character in the movie.
@Ash78: With all the junk in the trunk and a twitchy personality than can turn on you and kill you at a moments notice if you are not paying attention? Definitely female.
@Ash78: The 911 shouldn't have been a girl. I want to get a 2010 GT3. Now every 10 year old boy is going to think I'm a girl. My little cousin has the game. I use the Porsche because it's awesome. He picks Lightning McQueen because that's a "boy" car.
@Lord Pferdestärke the 357th: I have accidentally referred to Lighting as both "Steve McQueen" and "The Owen Wilson One" to my nephew, who now thinks I am insane.
@conrader: My wife also cannot stand Larry the Cable Guy, but he's pretty good in the movie. I suppose it's because they gave him the lines rather than letting him come up with his own material.

I kept waiting for a Portia DeRossi fish to show up.
Ze entendre, she is, how you say, double?

When did you hear Mater shout out "Git 'er done?"
I'll definitely watch Cars 2.
