It is legal in some states like Texas to defend your car just like you would defend your property if a burglar enters.
There seem to be a lot of people inthis country who think it is perfectly fine to defend your car with deadly force.
Cars can always be replaced, people not so much.

Btw, what if your friend/neighbor/brother who doesn't know you have debts on your car thinks the repo man is indeed a thief? Repoing at night appears a fairly indefensible practice.

But if this guy came out with a knife, nobody would've been killed. If he'd called the cops, he would've found out what was going on. Instead, he brought out the long-range killing machine.
Sadly, the repo men were armed, too - because when everyone could potentially be shooting at you, you have to be.

The devil fools
with the best laid plan.
Swing low Alabama
You got spare change
You got to feel strange
And now the moment
is all that it meant.
Alabama, you got
the weight on your shoulders
That's breaking your back.
Your Cadillac
has got a wheel in the ditch
And a wheel on the track
Oh Alabama
Banjos playing
through the broken glass
Windows down in Alabama.
See the old folks
tied in white ropes
Hear the banjo.
Don't it take you down home?

A British cop blog has started using the phrase "the evil poor"--which flies in the face of much traditional and "liberal" belief that the poor are always to be pitied and helped, and given breaks because they are "unfortunate" or "deprived." The Brit argues that there is a hard core percentage of evil f*cks who are violent, lazy, and ignorant and taking the system for everything they can get.
Shooting at the poor bastard who's re-poing your car is evil. And stupid, because it won't help you keep your car, it will create worse trouble and, as he found out, may even kill you. That kind of short term thinking probably has something to do with his situation and demise. Besides, he should have immediately thought, "Who the hell would be stealing a Sebring?"

Every time I see an unemployed single mother of 5+ kids who is living in the 'hood on welfare while pregnant with yet another future criminal, I remember that the lazy, poor people are as much a hindrance to society as the rich scumbags who steal retirements.
For every Bernie Madoff, there are a million welfare leeches who refuse to stop having illegitimate children. Oh well, that's what we get for caring about, and caring for, people. But, that's another debate...

No. No, it's not. Happens with white folks, black folks, Latino folks... pretty much every group, you can find this shit going on.

Furniture repo ain't like repossessing a car. You gotta knock on the door. They gotta let you in. Sometimes it doesn't work out that easy.
Knock-knock. "Yeah?"
"Sir, you either gotta put some serious money on your overdue bill or I gotta take that dryer back."
"You ain't takin my dryer."
"See, that's just it - that ain't your dryer. It's mine until you finish paying for it. Even if you were current on your payments you'd only be halfway through, and you're a couple months behind. I can't leave without it. You gotta settle up, give it up, or I take you to court. And if we go to court, you're gonna lose."
Door slams. Door opens again. Shotgun greets me.
"YOU AIN'T TAKIN MY GODDAM DRYER."
Now here's where I got pretty damned stupid. At the time I was in pretty good shape and could do a 50-yard dash in about seven seconds flat. Did I demonstrate that? No.
"Dumbass, you're gonna fuckin shoot me over a $200 household appliance?" Here I call your attention to one of Niven's Laws, this one being Never throw shit at an armed man. It's possible that he was only showing the gun as a means of bolstering his position. Whatever the case, I was still on the porch, trying to get the dryer back.
Negotiations broke down at this point. I retreated to my van, called the law, and got the dryer with further assistance from LEOs. How he didn't get pistol-whipped into sensibility is beyond me.
I have a few other stories that go that way. Somehow I'm still drawing breath. All I can say is, if you have to get fired, being fired from your repo job is pretty good. And it was.

I would expect that repo men are somewhere in the same ethical vicinity.
Tip of the day: If you have an accident - don't let the cops have your car towed to a yard if there is anything you can do about it. Make sure that you have it towed to your personal mechanic or someone you trust. Otherwise everything in your car could end up gone with absolutely no recourse for you. Also, if you have anything nice on your car, performance parts wise, you could end up having it replaced with stock/crap parts.
If you are ever in a tow yard office - look around - notice the knee capping baseball bat behind the door - and enjoy that creepy feeling like you are in the set for a mob movie.

If you're going to open fire on your repo man, make sure he's not an ex-Marine.

I wasn't surprised when the dealership closed six months later.

Then when they come back the next day to fill out the paperwork. They are far less likely to have buyers remorse. Because they have driven the car and now feel like they have partial ownership.
Its not even a shady practice. Just another tool in the sales manager box

One of the best lines I've read on the Jalop in a long time. Thanks Ray!

"Our Trucks run quieter than your typical tow truck with either a Ford or International chassis. That way, you can go to any undesirable area in (insert your City here) without any of the neighbors alerting the deadbeat that his (her) car is about to be snatched. Go ahead, listen to our very quiet diesel"
It has worked for a number of Auto Repossessing Haulers up here in the Northeast!

On a side note, don't shoot the messenger.
