You know what would be even better. If they taught the damn kids how to drive. In the past two weeks I was rear-ended and was hit by a hit and run driver. If I see someone use a turn signal I am shocked and going over the lines have become a pastime.
That said I am still in favour of the legislation just add a "learn to drive well" amendment. People against this must not note the fact that if they are learning to recycle vehicle parts and fluids they are actually able to work on their own cars.
We're teaching kids to take public transportation while they're in Driver's Ed? That's like going to Blockbuster to rent a movie and being told to read a book. #michigan
And while they're at it, they might as well teach the teens about the virtues of abstinence as well.
I'm all for carpooling, public transportation and fuel efficiency. But really, don't a lot of teens already know about the importance of carpooling? If you want to go to the movies or the roller rink or the soda shop, you pile in with the friend who has the car. Public transportation is an option if you're going somewhere where nobody will see you.
I'm not sure that the fuel efficiency lesson is relevant. If teens today are anything like I was, total fuel consumed will likely be the same regardless of what kind of car they have. If they have enough money for 2 gallons of gas, they'll drive 30 miles in their '85 Grand Prix or 80 miles in their '92 Civic.
As for recycling parts and fluids, for my first car the parts were available for pick up on the roadside, and the fluids were either given back to mother nature in clouds of smoke or in a trail of drips. #michigan
I'd rather the recycling bit be included in shop classes. Then maybe people would stop using motor oil to try to get rid of those stumps out by the 'crick'. The rest of it doesn't belong in a curriculum that is designed to make the roads safer for everyone but most especially FOR THE CHILDREN!!! :D (Those precious little snowflakes.) #michigan
Fine. I suggest that "the significance of the auto industry to the local economy" be added to the Michigan state history curriculum - and that these two sit through it before proposing any more legislation. #michigan
Piffle. Let's no overload the poor 16-year-olds' brains, or rather nerve bundles. They've got enough on their minds, like DJ Hero, Rock Band...DJ Rock Band...Guitar Hero...crabcore... #michigan
Hey, it can't be any less useful than the curriculum in my driver's ed program, which as far as I can remember, was entirely composed of lessons in how to be bored witless and avoid riding in the car with the smelly kid. #michigan

What about these new mirrors which house rain sensors for wipers, garage door openers, compasses and other things. The mirror in my BMW takes up almost twice as much space as my last car. I'm not a fan of hanging things from mirrors and I do believe it restricts vision, so I don't have a huge problem with this.
Also, if you read the whole article, there is no way in hell someone is driving across the country with $200K in cash and not up to something shady. #airfreshener

Dude, that's old school right there.
Now they call it study skills class, and teach you no significant skills or useful trade whatsoever.
