<![CDATA[Wienermobile Crashes Bun-First Into Wisconsin House]]> The Wienermobile seems to be popping up quite a bit in recent weeks, this time venturing off course and inserting itself into a Wisconsin home while whistling 'Oh I wish I were an Os-car Mayer Wiener!'

The driver reportedly took a wrong turn down a dead-end street in Racine, Wisconsin, necessitating a U-turn. While attempting the maneuver, the driver mistakenly hit the gas pedal rather than the brakes, sending the storied Wienermobile into a nearby house. (H/T To Chad!)

<![CDATA[Metro Detroit I-75 Explosion Caught On Tape As It Happened]]> Detroit ABC affiliate WXYZ managed to grab exclusive video from a gas station on the corner of the I-75 service drive and Nine Mile Rd. Watch as the tanker explodes and cars continue through the flames.

From our earlier report:

The accident occured around 8:15 PM when the tanker reportedly got tangled up with a car and another semi truck. The tanker ended up across the freeway underneath the 9 Mile road over pass where it exploded, sending a massive column of black smoke skyward. The fire went on for hours and, eventually, the newly finished bridge overhead collapsed. Amazingly, nobody was seriously injured in the incident.

<![CDATA[Detroit I-75 Bridge Collapse Mega-Gallery]]> Yesterday a tanker carrying 9000 gallons of gasoline exploded after crashing on I-75 in the Detroit suburb of Hazel Park. The resulting inferno caused a massive fire and bridge collapse. Mega-gallery of the carnage below.

This morning, police have completely closed off both sides of the freeway and blockaded 9 Mile Road while officials investigate the crash and assess the damage. An entire two mile section of freeway is expected to be closed for months while the cleanup and reconstruction occur.

<![CDATA[I-75 Tanker Explosion Collapses Nine Mile Rd Overpass In Metro Detroit]]> A tanker truck and several other semi trucks were involved in a large accident on northbound I-75 in Metro Detroit. The tanker impacted with such force that it exploded, collapsing the Nine Mile Rd overpass.

Details are sketchy at this point, but reports say that the tanker truck (not known at this time what exactly it was carrying) hit the top of the bridge causing the explosion. Several other semi trucks were traveling along side as well as a few passenger cars. At this time there are no reported deaths or injuries.

According to witnesses on the scene, the recently completed Nine Mile Rd overpass collapsed over the I-75 northbound lane directly after the explosion which occurred around 8:15 pm. [via WXYZ]

<![CDATA[Another Lamborghini Gallardo Goes Up In Flames]]> Add another to the list of Lamborghinis lost to sudden and catastrophic fires. This latest bull-headed super car to catch fire did so outside a pub in England.

The fire happened yesterday, when two men were apparently out test-driving the car and had to bail when they notice smoke billowing from the engine bay. They called fire fighters and attempted to put the car out with a hand held extinguisher, but the car burned to the ground. Adding insult to injury, the pair stopped outside a line of bars and the inferno drew a crowd of about 150, all recording the blaze for posterity with their cell phones.

Considering this kind of thing is becoming strangely common in the world of Lamborghinis, we're wondering if this is some kind of planned obsolescence program to insure continued super car sales.

<![CDATA[Atlanta Parking Garage Collapse Carnage Mega-Gallery]]> An intense, all-night search of yesterday's collapsed Atlanta garage thankfully revealed no injured or crushed people. The cars, on the other hand, as you can see in the gallery below, didn't fare quite as well.

Credit goes to the search-and-rescue crews who worked through 100-degree heat yesterday afternoon, the all through the night, in a still-collapsing garage. In fact, while searching for individuals, they were simultaneously propping up the four levels of the parking deck that imploded in on itself. At the moment, as they're still in the S&R portion of the recovery, they've yet to determine the cause of the accident. [Atlanta Journal Constitution, WSBTV]

<![CDATA[Audi R8 Hydroplanes Into Moscow Freeway Wall]]> We pulled our best Shia LaBeouf impersonation while watching this video of a driver losing control of his Audi R8 on a Moscow freeway and stuffing it into the wall. If there's any consolation it's that the footage is free from the sound of crunching metal — the kind that haunted our dreams after watching the wrecked Ferrari F430 get dragged away. <![CDATA[Is Your Candidate Worth Dying For? Study Reports Car Crash Risk Rises On Election Days]]> MSNBC reports a study to be published in the Journal of the American Medical Association finds that, on average, your chance of dying in a car crash rises 18% on election day. Conducted by Canadian researchers, the study looked at presidential election days from Jimmy Carter's 1976 win through Bush/Kerry 2004 and discovered that an average of 24 more car-accident deaths were reported on those days than on other October and November Tuesdays. So is it solid science or just a socialist Canadian ploy to get us to abandon democracy?

Roy Lucke, senior scientist at Northwestern's Center for Public Safety, says "This is one of the most off-the-wall things I've ever read, but the science is good." The researchers behind the study cite causes for the mortality rise to people rushing to get to polling places with which they may not be familiar, often in the dark before or after work. The moral? Get out and vote, but do it during daylight hours and make sure you're driving a huge SUV so you're protected. [MSNBC]

<![CDATA[This Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 Is The Most Expensive Crash Ever... In India]]> Indian Autos Blog, the lovers of all things automotive on the subcontinent, claim the smash-up of this Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 was the most expensive car crash in India's history. Whether or not that's true isn't really clear, but we're more interested in determining the "why." Perhaps the driver was just trying to imitate Bruce Wayne's intentional bull bashing. Then again, maybe he just lost control due to the bright yellow paint's magnetic traits. (Hat tip to Raja!)

<![CDATA[What's The Worst Way You've Lost A Car?]]> This morning brought some seriously wanton scenes of vehicular destruction in the form of five supercars smashed up in the UK and government-sponsored motorcycle-shredding in China. We weep for these lost brothers, but in grief there is also time for reflection: Today we honor the memories of our favorite fallen chariots by asking you to share a memory...a glimpse into your pain. Whether by fire, flood or hoontastic exploding cliffjump, what's the worst way you've lost a car?

Us? We've lost a few. One that sticks in our minds was an RX-7 Turbo T-boned into a Supra (the Supra's fault). As I kicked the door open on the Mazda and stepped down from significantly higher up than I remembered the car sitting before, I knew it was a goner. Was it a particularly special car? No, but watching its fluids leak slowly into the storm gutter and knowing it would never run again set off a pang of emotion that I remember to this day. The whiplash sucked too...

<![CDATA[Corvette Set Ablaze By Fireworks, Project Car Hell Comes To Life]]> Rich Szatkowski really loved his 1989 Corvette project car. So much so, he spent the entire 4th of July reupholstering the interior and fitting it with a new steering wheel and stereo. As a final touch, he washed the carpet and left a roof panel off so it could dry overnight. Then disaster struck. While the 'Vette was parked in his driveway a stray firework landed inside it, setting the car ablaze. As you can see in the pictures, it was a total loss.

Speaking to a local news station, Rich described the loss, "Oh, God, I loved this thing. I've owned a Corvette since 1972. My heart is broken, it's just...I want another one." Ray paid about $27,000 for the car, investing a further $25,000 in restoring it. The work he was completing earlier in the day was the final stage of that restoration. Because Rich wasn't currently driving the car, it was uninsured. Rich, our deepest and most heartfelt sympathies go out to you. We tip an oil can in your poor car's honor. [via Corvette Blogger]

<![CDATA[Attack Of The Killer Lexus RX300!]]> It came from a northern Ireland supermarket parking lot, it had a lust for Porsche Boxster and Toyota Celica blood, and it would not stop until it had crushed both into submission: It was the killer Lexus RX300! Dun, Dun, DUUUUN!!!!! Local news reporters assumed it was the result of poor automatic transmission shifting skills, but those in the know won't be turning their backs on any RX300's any time soon... they're all out there, just waiting to crush your ride next.

Nobody seems to have been hurt here, but there are definitely some bruised egos. It's worth the trip over to the BBC website to check out the video, as it's rife with funny British words and pronunciations like "sa-LEE-ka," talk of bonnets, and amusing Irish accents. We're going to hell, we know. [BBC]
