I really don't quite understand all of the lobbying for an Editor-in-Chief, unless there is some payback coming for the lobbyist. That must be it, a way for Ray and his gang to get in the "mainstream" media, to ride the wave of a once great publication, to have the ability to wine and dine with the influential auto elite.
I really doubt if this will save the magazine. It is far too gone to even really matter any longer.
@scottcom36 has Weekday DT's, Weekend OD's: We have normally preferred "Car und Driver" as of late, but maybe we'll start, you know, using a more appropriate style guide usage. Like, Car & Alterman.
Well, good. I was rooting for Mike Austin but that was a long shot.
As I always do when a massive shift like this takes place during troubled times, I'm hoping for a "this is so crazy it just might work" plan of action on the part of the new guy. In any case, it's interesting times.
@John Krewson: We were (mostly) all rooting for Austin. Ray's right; he's really good people. It would've been a long shot indeed, but if it's not him, I'm happy with Alterman.
Jack, I've read stories by Eddie that I've enjoyed very much; he's got talent. Those stories never appeared on "that website," though, which I've long thought was an indication that he simply didn't take his position there very seriously.
@crazyreesie: I value your opinion and will take it for truth. The stuff I read of his at Automobile was always Swan-wannabe snark, but I'm not familiar with his entire oeuvre.
Still, he's supposed to be an *editor*, and the outright keyboard diarrhea that splashed all over Hoetive could have used more editing.
And by "editing", I mean "mercy killing".
Still, to think that this guy now sits in the seat once occupied by Stephan Wilkinson and David E. Davis, Jr.... that's so depressing there aren't words for it.
Hopefully C&D can buck the industry trend, and having a real car guy at the helm definitely will help. It will be interesting to see what changes come about.

John Philips is the only good thing Car and Driver has going for them. They clearly don't use his crazy genius enough. In fact, he'd fit right in at Jalopnik.
I even bought his book! (And promptly left it behind on an airplane or something.)
I'll even grudgingly admit Gillies is a helluva driver and I enjoy reading his Napoleonic racing exploits. I feel like they should all begin with: "As I placed the booster seat into the Formula 1 car..."
This is good news, motivemag is a gorgeous site and great read, which is hard to come by these days (beyond Jalop, of course). Best of luck to him. To be honest though, I've never liked C&D, even as a youth it seemed second rung to R&T. Then I discovered Car magazine and I never went back to Americans again.
If he can bring some of the web's pioneering spirit, motive's design and journalism (yeah, journalism) back to an American car magazine, I might consider reading it.
BTW, I hate a Wert teary-eyed moment just this morning when I put the last of my old Car mags out for recycling. Let's just say the wife won the day.
@DrewDraws303.25bhp: You're about to get the shock of your life. I'm a Car subscriber so get my issues a few days early. The redesigned Car is a complete mess.
I might have to resubscribe, now that Auto(bi)Week has decided to suck hard.
I subscribed to C&D for decades, and still have the old issues, just like R&T. I used to like their attitude and range, but their shifting focus to SUV's and pickups, and their continuing diminished editorial ability to do an honest evaluation of any large manufacturer's vehicles made me tremendously disappointed.
Print media is on the ropes. Magazines are shrinking to the point that I often mistakenly throw them in the recycle pile with the Ballard Design catalogs. Is C&D going to be able to make it?
What will Eddie Alterperson do now that folks like me go to the Jalop for our auto fix? In particular, Weekend Murlopnik for our C&D style review of wacky and interesting autopsychotica like LeMons.

Never, ever Car & Driver or C&D

If somebody can't write, can't drive, and can't edit, how does he become editor-in-chief? Presumably HF wants to banko this bitch, stat.

Then I cried, because I've had a subscription to Motor Trend for 15 years. I don't even know why anymore.

1. Brock Yates left.
2. Old man Bedard only writes about gas mileage
3. The wit and scathing commentary simply vanished.
4. It reads like Road & Track's uglier, less intelligent cousin publication now.

I am letting my current subscription expire w/o renewing.

@bzr used the word carpocalypse on a college paper: Not true -- Mike Austin's good people as well.

Yeah we did it!
