”Barack Obama To Sponsor NASCAR Sprint Cup Car In Florida, Other Cars To Turn Right In Protest
Presidential hopeful Barack Obama will be attempting to reach red state audiences by sponsoring a NASCAR Sprint Cup car for the Pocono race on August 3rd of this year. Assuming no one gives it the red flag, this will be the first time that a presidential candidate has officially sponsored a NASCAR entrant. The one-time sponsorship deal is part of a larger "get out the vote" and "make John McCain spend all his money" initiative by the campaign. The #49 car is run by BAM Racing and will be driven by Ken Schrader. Of course, it's a Toyota. More »New Top Ten Stolen Cars List Shows Criminals Love The '90s
The National Insurance Crime Bureau just announced their list of the top ten most stolen cars, and surprisingly, most of them were cheaper older models from the 1990s. Forbes says it's because these cars' parts have a greater demand on the salvage market, which is probably true since every '95 Honda Civic we see on the road seems to be sporting a hood from some other Civic. Full list below the jump. More »Toyota Camry Hybrid Engineer Worked To Death
The death of a Japanese Toyota engineer in January 2006 has now been attributed to working too many hours according to an official ruling this past month. The 45-year-old man, lead engineer on the Toyota Camry Hybrid, was reportedly working an average of 80 hours overtime per month during the several months before his death from ischemic heart disease. The official ruling allows his family to collect benefits from his work insurance, and Toyota is saying they will work to improve monitoring of the health of their workers. Let's hope they mean it, because this occurence, known as "karoshi," has steadily increased since the Health Ministry first recognized the phenomenon in 1987. More »Buy Your Civic Hybrid Today: Tax Credit Halves Tomorrow
The Honda Civic hybrid is the latest victim of the hybrid tax break exemption. Beginning on July 1, the tax credit for owning a Honda Civic hybrid will be sliced in half, from $1,050 to $525, on its way down to zero. If you recall, owners of hybrid vehicles are only eligible for the full tax credit until the manufacturer sells 60,000 units of that particular hybrid vehicle. Then a phase-out process begins, eventually reducing the credit to nothing except that warm glow you get

There may be no better indicator that many carmakers have been unable to adjust to the sudden increase in gas prices and the resulting shift in consumer demand than hybrid sales. Although there was an obvious run to more fuel-efficient cars — witness the Civic besting the Ford F-150 in overall sales for the first time ever — hybrid sales overall were down 11% from April to May, down 24.3% month-to-month from 2007 and even the market-leading Toyota Prius experienced a 31% drop in sales for the month. How did that happen? There are a few factors at work here, which we've helpfully outlined below the jump.

Gas Prices Up 8.2%, Hybrid Sales Down 11.0% In May... Wait, What?

Toyota To Build Camry Hybrid In Thailand, Become King Of Siam
It's interesting to see where automakers are placing their chips these days. Toyota is expanding production of its popular Toyota Camry Hybrid to Thailand. Toyota wants to break the million mark for annual hybrid sales in the next decade and a way to do that is to start building hybrids in markets with significant demand, including 9,000 hybrid Camrys in Thailand. Let's contrast Toyota's response with GM. The automaker just announced the power numbers on the new Cadillac CTS-V and they just let Hertz fly with their release on the new Corvette ZHZ rent-a-racer. Hmm. We feel like maybe there's a slight difference in PR strategy here — but we can't quite put our finger on it. Press release below the jump.More »
Civic Pries Best-Seller Crown Away From Ford F-150's Cold, Dead Hands
After an eleventy-billion year reign as the nation's top seller, it looks as though the Ford F-150 has stumbled for at least one month. The month of May saw the Honda Civic overtake the F-150 in sales putting the Ford down in fourth place. Whaaa!? Indeed, 42,973 F-series trucks sold in May, against 52,826 Corollas, 51,291 Camrys and 53,299 Honda Civics. Since we know Toyota counts the Matrix towards Corolla sales, we'll discount that figure, but who cares? As we called (sorta) yesterday, Civic for the win. According to Jim Farley, Ford group vice president for marketing and communications, "That's just a sign of the times. I think May has been a watershed month." Do people care about gas prices? We think this means the answer is "yes." [Automotive News (Subscription required)]Old Man Backs Over Cop Car... Accidentally
Everyone gets a miffed when the cops write you a ticket. Even though you may have gotten nabbed and don't feel it's fair, that's no reason to back up and over the officers squad car. Well, according to the Daily Herald, 70-year-old Henry Raskin of Niles, Illinois was pretty miffed at the ticket he received, so miffed in fact that he intended to speed away from the cop. Problem is the car was in reverse. As a result, you can see yet another classic instance of the automotive mating ritual . We're sure this was only an accident and the officer was totally understanding.[DailyHerald via Motive]
Tony Stewart Edition Toyota Camry? Sort of.
We like when dealers try and take advantage of trends to make the special editions that the automakers were just too wimpy or cheap to attempt. In this case, we've got a Toyota dealer that's taking advantage of Tony Stewart and his racing a Camry in the NASCAR Sprint Cup series. How does it work? Take a black Toyota Camry, add gaudy orange touches, blacked-out NASCAR wheels, festoon with the #20 and charge an additional $7K. This makes sense to us as most NASCAR fans drive Toyotas, right? One thing you'll notice has not been added to this car is the name "Tony Stewart" as this would almost certainly draw a lawsuit. Anyone have an idea what stadium this is outside of?(Hat tip to Zerin!) [Dubspeed Racing]
choose your eternity
We see the Omni GLH has pulled ahead of the Porsche 924 Turbo by a 60-40 margin in yesterday's Choose Your Eternity poll, but what we aren't seeing is the big picture. As in, holy crap, the oil is running out! Yes, the wells were pumping, pumping, all thatcha like, but now we need to start thinking about what we'll be driving in a post-global-socio-econo-nihilo no-more-cheap-oil sorta world. We don't want to give up on internal combustion, and we just gotta have forced induction, so it would seem the easiest choice would be turbocharged diesel cars made to run on vegetable oil and/or animal fat (you killjoys who want to gripe about how you still need the petroleum-fueled gears of society to keep a-spinnin' to produce such oils can just go suspend your disbelief, in the same way you need to suspend your disbelief about the impossibility of actually finishing a Hell Project).

Commenter of the Day: We So Horny Edition
You knew this was coming. Though with the insane amount of what seems to be high school testosterone flying around this joint there were many more big dorky losers than winners. I'm guessing about 72% to 28% depending on the breaks. Still, the gold buried in that 28% is quite shiny. Picking just one winner for COTD honors at first seemed like quite a task. But then, b.borrman stepped up to the plate and knocked the ball out of the park. More »

SEMA 2007: Lowrider Camry Project Car Hits Flickr Ahead Of SEMA
While not quite as big a project car reveal as say, Popular Hot Rodding's "Project X" car, we're fairly sure the folks at Lowrider were probably hoping to keep their project car off the radar until their big reveal of the pimped-out Camry come SEMA show-time. Who are we kidding, they totally would love the attention. Lucky for them, some shots managed to make their way on to Flickr, and then make their way here. So, here it is in a set of not-quite-ready for prime time shots below. [via Flickr]

Toyota Drops In Consumer Reports Annual Car Reliability Survey, Ford Improves
Apparently, the V6 version of the Toyota Camry, a long-time resident to Consumer Reports' "Annual Car Reliability Survey," is no longer welcome around those parts. And it's not just the Camry, but also the new bigger-than-big four-wheel-drive V8-powered Toyota Tundra and the Lexus Gs. All three of these vehicles "declining reliability" has canceled the "automatic recommended" rating given to the Toyota, Scion and Lexus brands from CR. Hmm, that's no good thing — except it appears to be a boon for Ford, who's showing some serious increases in quality ratings this past year in the Explorer, the F-150 and the Mustang. Toyota Pulls TRD Aurion After Failure Incident
Toyota's investigating a report of an engine failure on its new TRD-tuned Aurion/Camry, and suspending sales of the supercharged, 323-hp sedan until tech issues are sorted. According to one Toyota exec speaking to AU's Drive, the failure is unrelated to the supercharger or the engine power output. If we were the jealous types, we might get some manner of sour-grapes thrill from the misfortune. But we're so far above that it isn't even funny. [Drive via Motor Authority]

That's One Way To Cool Your Camry Family Hauler
Eagle-eyed tipster Marc snagged a shot of what we're certain is not a new Toyota Camry wagon and we're fairly certin will not be introduced as a new concept at the Frankfurt Auto Show. It is however a very unique and yet also quite ghetto way of cooling down your late 80's family hauler. Maybe the owner came up with the idea from somewhere else? One thing we're absolutely certain of is that it probably more effective than this car mod.
