So they never hooned the test mules? Crap, I figured dumping the clutch at 5000 RPM would be the first thing even the most geeky of test engineers would do.

@WilliamG.: It's possible that drivers who know what they are doing are unable to recreate the worst a vehicle will see from a horrible driver. Complete idiocy can be difficult to anticipate, much less simulate fully.

Just replace "British" with "American" and "Lucas" with "Tremec".

It is my understanding the fault is in the output shafts of a batch of Tremec transmissions.

@Tossed Accordtaco salad over Malibu:The same gearbox is installed in Vipers, Z06s, GT500s, Challengers, G8 GXPs, CTS-Vs, HSVs, etc.

I know some Challengers and Z06s have had similar problems. Maybe Tremec quality is slipping. Who knows.

Here's an idea: dismantle the "launch control."

If you can't launch it with your own hands and feet, then you don't get to launch.

@Novaload Misses Murilee: absolutely. Launch control is really for automatics - defeats the point entirely of having a clutch pedal.

Yeah, but at least GM isn't trying to void their warranties, and is actually being proactive in admitting that there is a problem and trying to find a solution to it as quickly as they can.

Try getting that kind of reaction out of Nissan, or any other car company any more.

There are still a lot of problems with GM, but it seems that they have got the transparency and customer service thing fixed pretty well.

@pauljones: I thought Nissan had redone the launch control feature such that it shouldn't result in broken transmissions anymore. And this doesn't say anything about warranties either.

But hey, maybe now we're learning that launch control on a high powered car is a potential recipe for disaster for anyone, and not just Nissan.

@elwood: Nissan only did that after struggling and denying that it was their fault that people were using one of their most bragged about features.

@elwood: I thought Nissan had solved that problem by removing the launch control altogether, but only after giving owners of its new-found supercar for the masses one hell of a collective headache without first stating that the conditions of the warranty upfront.

Granted, you are correct, launch control is always a potential trouble spot on high-powered cars. I am not blaming Nissan for that; I do, however, criticize Nissan for the horrible way in which they handled it. And, if memory serves, any use of the launch control on the Nissan whatsoever voided the warranty, regardless of whether or not it damaged the transmission.

The same can't be said for the Camaro, and my guess is that if GM was being as sheisty about its warranties as Nissan, we would have heard about it the day it happened; such is the scrutiny that GM is presently under.

@pauljones: The thing with Nissan's LC is that it wasn't a launch control. They shouldn't turn the stability control off. That's why it voided the warranty. The new one works with the SC on and revs to 3000rpm (vs the old 4500rpm) to avoid transmission crap out.
