@General Halfshaftery: Well, it's Toronto area right now (Keswick, an hour north), and yes, I have a total weakness for Oldsmobiles - I actually found this because every couple of weeks, I'll troll eBay for manual Oldsmobiles out of some sense of curiousity (I would sort of like an Alero with the Ecotec and five-speed). I'd also dig this 442, but not at that price (not even the $7200 it was at when I sent the link in).
@Paul Y. can't think of a better, shorter handle: You may return your Tube of Intarnetz at the Cotomer Sevis desk for a pro rated refund to be mailed in six to eight weeks. Tax, shipping and handling to be deducted.
Always nice to be in the company of such notorious felons, though.
You know, this gets Crackpipe Description of the Day. Just mentioning the forgettable Scoupe tosses it into a whole 'nother dimension. And who could forget the Scoupe Turbo? Or that a Scoupe Turbo won the Pikes Peak Hill Climb for its division?
Oh wait, I did.
The Quad 4 was a great concept. Too bad they rushed the production; in practice it was fragile and difficult to fix. So I'll pass. For about the same amount of money I could find a cherry Buick Regal T-Type - similar power, WAY more potential, and even more of a sleeper than the "Quad 442."
Yeah, it's crack pipe as hell. That body style has all but vanished hereabouts, having once been ubiquitous.
What a falling off was there! From the hot rod 442s of my youth to this thin, small, plain, scrawny great-great-great-great-great-grandson who was unable to keep the family line going.
As a car, no it wasn't much. As a footnote to history and the last gasp of one of the oldest car companies in the world, it represents the beginning of the end we are now seeing.
I loved looking out my bedroom window at that giant backlit rocket on the factory. This is what I'd see now. It was one of the last.
@mytdawg: On Christmas Eve,1974, the Mine, while giving out the X-Mas Bonus, told the workers of my hometown that their services were no longer needed, effective immediately. Vandals of unknown origin took this opportunity to shut off the natural gas to the entire city, just as a major storm bore down upon us. I was only eleven, and snow in the desert on Christmas was unheard of, as well as the record cold snap that followed. Our family had one of those ornamental-type fireplaces, with a chimney and everything, but mainly architectural and a place to put photo's and stuff on the mantle. My parents shoved about every piece of wood they could find, save the antiques, into that un-godly inefficient fireplace, just to keep us from freezing. Two elderly shut-ins died, and it took the gas company almost a week to get service back, because they had to go to each house, turn everything off, pressurize the system, then light every pilot-light in the whole town, lest the disaster get even worse. It put every X-Mas after that into perspective. Merry Christmas!
@mytdawg: Hey, that's all that remains of the Lansing Car Assembly plant, right? My brother lives a stone's throw away from you. I grew up in East Lansing, and went on an awesome tour there when I was in high school. Too bad everything moved to Delta Township. GM gave Lansing its strength.
@coupeZ600: We rode out the first oil embargo by my father buying a Stepvan and delivering packages for a year or two. Only storms shut us down like that so far.
I once drove a Quad4-equipped Cutlass back in the day. Decent power, OK handling, but that motor sounds like a tractor engine with bad bearings. Awful, simply awful when compared to my '91 Acura Integra.
While I'd love to have that Acura back (from whoever stole it), I have no desire to relive a '91 Cutlass.
I'd love to have an oddity like this. Maybe not for $8500 however. I once owned a mint regular edition Cutlass Calais 2 dor for around $850.
Anyway, these things are pretty neat;
"In order to legitimize Olds Motorsports components that where to be used in the Firestone Firehawk , Luk Clutch, and Escort World Challenge racing efforts Olds had to built a minimum of 200 production cars with those components. They built 204, identical to the standard Quad 442(W40) except the following where added, ABS Braking Controller, Baffled fuel tanks, hotter cams, high po muffler, 7200 rpm redline and different trans ratios. 7 of the 204 cars got and extra special treatment, which included the removal of the A/C system and an engine oil cooler in its place, a Torsen Limited slip diff, and no cruise control. "
@danio3834: Agreed. While this example is priced pretty high for its condition, I wouldn't mind giving it a good thrashing myself.
I've always had a thing for the styling of the Calais, too. It's got much cleaner lines than its sister-car Grand Am, IMHO. I'm not afraid to admit I felt a lump in my throat when my friend wrecked her plain-jane gun metal grey '90 Calais 2 door.
Back in the day, 4-4-2 stood for 4 speed, 4 bbl carb and dual exhaust. By 1991, it meant 4 seat belts, 4 side marker lights and two windshield wipers. Still crack pipe.
Come on, Murilee, really. 1991 Oldsmobile, "interesting bit of Detroit musclecar history"? I can only hope that statement was yet another example of your particular brand of ironic facetiousness, like your pretending that you're not actually a hot chick...
@Slantsick- on layaway at SPATULA CITY: And only 96 calories! This is the low-carb Michelob of muscle cars. The Diet Coke of muscle cars. The cheap Chinese-made Wal-Mart appliance of muscle cars. Ugh.
@Slantsick- on layaway at SPATULA CITY: Just because they called it a 442, doesn't make it a muscle car. It's a slightly up-engined Cutlass, big deal. It's not even the good Cutlass.

It's "an interesting bit of Detroit musclecar history," in the same sense that I'm a "noted felon" for my 1997 loitering ticket.

It's way too early to attempt to be witty.
I declare my prior comment MODERATE FAIL.

To be fair, so was the Quad-4, if you could stand the racket.
