Commenter Of The Day: Different Kinds Of Hybrids Edition

When we think of hybrids we tend to think of a small gas engine and an even smaller electric motor, a la the 2008 Mercury Mariner Hybrid. There's also the inverse, like the Aptera, which uses a small gas engine to power a strong electric motor. But "hybrid" can mean so many different things. It's just two concepts combined to make one. Jon Stewart, for instance, drives a truck-robotic dinosaur hybrid that helps him maneuver through the streets of NYC. More »

2009 Cadillac CTS-V Specs Made Official, Gets 556 HP

We knew the new super-spec 2009 Cadillac CTS-V would be getting some impressive output numbers, and today the official figures are out — 556 HP at 6,100 RPM and 551 lb-ft of torque at 3,800 RPM. With those bitchin' numbers, the CTS-V will be doing 0-60 MPH in a lightning fast 3.9 seconds, with a standing quarter mile coming in at 12 seconds flat. Sure, but how fast will she go? What about 175 MPH with the six-speed auto and 191 MPH with the manual transmission? Okay, we're a little light-headed at the moment; obviously the CTS-V is warping the space around our brains.

2009 Cadillac CTS-V Lapping The Nurburgring In Record Time

With an LS9 supercharged V8 said to make 567 HP, we know that the Cadillac CTS-V is one swift sedan. But we had no idea just how fast it would be until it recently set a lap time of 7:59.32 on the Nurburgring Nordschleife. That time makes it the fastest production sedan ever officially recorded on the German benchmark race track. Now, just in case you thought GM was just pulling your leg, the General has released this video showing the world what's what. Click the jump to check it out. More »

2009 Cadillac CTS-V Fastest Production Sedan Around Nürburgring Ever, Laps in 7:59.32

Sweet baby Blue Devil, everyone knew the 2009 Cadillac CTS-V would be some powerful strong stuff, but it just managed to lap the Nürburgring in 7:59.32 — that makes it the fastest production sedan ever to take the Nordschleife! With a projected 567 HP, tightened suspension, magnetic ride control, fancy-pants electro-mechanical rear end and a bodacious six speed at the ready, John Heinricy, executive with GM Performance Division piloted The Sedan to it's sub-eight-minute bragging rights. With the Japanese and the Americans duking it out for Nordschleife glory, we can't help but wonder how the Germans feel about all this.

2009 Cadillac CTS-V To Produce 567 HP?

Any way you cut it, GM is going for blood with the new and improved 2009 Cadillac CTS-V and word from engineers of an unofficial rating of at least 550 HP only furthers that point. It takes a lot to make the BMW M5 look like a chump, but a 50 HP advantage will do a thing like that. Of course, the engine hasn't gone through SAE certification yet, and based on GM's history of underselling the power output on its recent engines, Edmunds Inside Line is extrapolating a 567 HP figure out of the LS9 mill. We would never go so far as to speculate on numbers, but we will wring our hands in delighted anticipation.

2009 Cadillac CTS-V Caught in the Wild

A mere two weeks after the General revealed the 2009 Cadillac CTS-V at the Detroit Auto Show, it's now been spotted for the first time in the wild at a CTS owners meet-up. Talk about drumming up some enthusiast support grass-roots style, right? The folks at Desert-Motors.com have the scoop with some shots of the Michigan manny-plated tester getting taken for a drive by a GM employee and showing off that big hump of a hood. That hump, as you'll remember from earlier this month, conceals that giant 6.2-liter supercharged V8 producing 550 horsepower and an equal amount of lb.-ft. of torque. We're waiting for our test unit to show up here at the Jalopnik Detroit HQ in the land of the ice and snow, where the midnight sun sets and hot springs flow just so we can see how the performance traction management works on the icy pavement out front. For now we'll just have to dream — and continue to ogle the shots below. (Hat tip to Patrick Ernzen and many thanks to the folks at Desert-Motors.com!)

Detroit Auto Show: EyesOn Design Winners Announced

The Detroit Auto Show opened up with the North American Car and Truck of the Year awards, which was questionably awarded to the Chevy Malibu and the Mazda CX-9. Today the EyesOn Design awards presented four awards for design excellence and at least three of the four winners made sense. The award for the best production car went to the Cadillac CTS-V, which is very deserving. Also deserving is the BMW X6, which won the best production truck. The best concept car went to the Cadillac CTS Coupe. The oddity was the best concept truck, which went to the Chrysler ecoVoyager. Calling the ecoVoyager a truck is like calling a dragon a virgin.

Detroit Auto Show: 2009 Cadillac CTS-V

Today GM officially unveiled the 2009 Cadillac CTS-V. Yes, the same CTS-V that we have seen again and again. Don't fret, we're still salivating over it. The CTS-V delivers 550 horsepower at 550 lb.-ft of torque with its 6.2-liter supercharged V8. It is available in six speed manual transmission or automatic with paddle shifters. For the suspension, Magnetic Ride Control ensures that all shocks of the road are absorbed and the Performance Traction Management system should keep all wheels on the road. It will be launching in the fourth quarter of 2008.

Detroit Auto Show: 2009 Cadillac CTS-V Embargo Breaks, Officially

After we explained earlier about GM's web-based brain-fart, it looks like the covers have now been officially blown off the wicked new 2009 Cadillac CTS-V. We're talking 550 hp, we're talking about 550 lb.-ft. of torque, we're talking magnetic ride control, we're talking performance traction management, we're talking that beautiful 6.2L LSA Supercharged V8, we're talking sub-5 second 0-60 times (actually Cadillac's unofficially claiming it'll be closer to a four-second 0-60 time). And we're talking about all of this for a price supposedly competitive with the world's luxury sports sedans. Press release below the jump.

Detroit Auto Show: New Cadillac CTS-V Coming to Detroit, Officially

We've been salivating over the thought of the upcoming 2009 Cadillac CTS-V for a good long while now, and the press release we just posted on the Provoq concept unveiling is also confirming the Caddy that zooms will be taking the stage for all to see at Detroit. We almost can't wait to see the ultimate expression of art and science (and Corvette power train) in the flesh, but we're just going to have to wait. We're guessing the Cadillac Provoq concept being released at CES will be enough to hold us over till then — as we've only got a week left until the Detroit Auto Show — but holding out for a four-door 'merican power sedan with a six-speed attached to a big V8 engine rumored to be delivering power of over 500 horses will be tough going. We've got spy photos below to keep you company until then and the full press release below the jump.

2009 Cadillac CTS-V Uncovered!

The spy photographers of KGP snagged some shots of the upcoming 2009 Cadillac CTS-V completely in the buff ( the shots are better even than our earlier shots we're not afraid to say) — and let's just say the super-Caddy's looking sleek as all get-out. But the looks are less important than what's under the hood. Will it be the normally aspirated LS7 V8 or will it be a supercharged 6.2-liter V8? Sources at the General are coy on the issue but the expectation is it'll still have upwards of 525 HP. We're thinking we'll be finding out in the next couple of weeks before the Detroit Auto Show in mid-January where we're expecting an official unveiling. But for the time being, we'll always have these Edmunds shots, won't we?

2009 Cadillac CTS-V

We're finally starting to see some spy photos that show off what the front clip of the new 2009 Cadillac CTS-V's going to look like. These shots indicate the car's moving from test mule to production tester as we see the front end starting to take a bit more shape since the last time we saw the new CTS-V a few months back still with the old-school grille attached to the front end. But what about the big supercharged engine we've been told to expect under this V's bonnet? We'd heard numbers indicating HP up around 515 to 525. Are we right? Who knows, but here's what the magazine all about the Trend in Motors has to say from their always sterling-like-Chinese-made-silver sources:

2009 Cadillac CTS-V

We had an opportunity to drive the new 2008 Cadillac CTS the other day at a GM event out in Milford at the General's test center. While we were impressed with the ride, interior and the performance — it still had us wanting for more power. Specifically, we wanted to know what a V-series of Caddy's newest entry-level sedan would be like. It now looks like we'll be waiting until 2009 to see the new Cadillac CTS-V. At least that's what we're to understand in the following spy report and shots from Brenda Priddy's made man, Chris Doane. The details include a new supercharged small-block V8 good for at least 500 HP, with a number of between 515 and 525 HP not only possible but our sources tell us, probable. What we're also hearing is the new CTS-V will feature a supercharger integrated into the intake manifold, the same setup we'll be seeing on the upcoming Corvette ZR1. Production's set to start on this new supercharged Caddy in September of next year. Full report from Chris after the jump.

what's this then?

Blue Devil Caddy: A 600-hp Cadillac CTS-V?

Hmm. Motor Trend is divining some automotive tea leaves, or smoking them. In the mag's latest tree scrape, they say a 600+ horsepower Cadillac CTS-V is on the way. Lock up your vice presidents of accounting, this one could be a psycho killer. It'll piggy-back, engine wise, on the upcoming super Corvette, whose blown V8 has been the subject of wide speculation. MT's calling for a supercharged version of the Z06's 7.0-liter LS7 producing 700 horses. That goes against the predictions of others, who've said Chevy will use GM's 6.2-liter, lest all that force-feeding of air rend the LS7 into an automotive Caligula. Whatever block it uses, the Caddy's kit would be detuned somewhat. This beast of a CTS, it's said, will appear in 2009, sporting flared fenders, Brembo brakes, an aero kit and tighter steering. Bob Lutz has already said the next CTS-V would "suck the doors off a [BMW] M5." Something like this could suck the bolts out of a Nimitz-class aircraft carrier. This should happen, even if it doesn't. More »

Dear God Man: Katech Stuffs A 427 Into A Caddy!

We were going to tell you about an engine-and-exhaust package Katech developed for the Corvette Z06. Such a kit takes the LS7 mill from 505 hp to 600 hp without turbocharging. But tuning a Z06 is like wrapping bacon around filet mignon — unneeded and a bit gauche. However, we noticed that the just-north-of-Motown tuning shop will drop a 427-bomb under the hood of your Cadillac CTS-V. By our standards, that is tres-kosher. The company's K.spec package starts with a GM LS7 crate engine, to which are added forged pistons, custom cams, ported cylinder heads with reworked valves, a larger throttle body and forged connecting rods/crankshaft. Of course there's also a larger intake manifold and louder bigger exhaust system. All this tech is good for 550 hp. Not much of a power upgrade over the 525 hp 6.7-liter CTS-V we told you about a few years ago. But just think of the extra torque. How much for all this power? Sorry impoverished hoons, the raw engine goes for $23,000. More »

Spy Video: 2008 Cadillac CTS-V

The footage is just average, but pay close attention to the soundtrack of this video on Edmunds Inside Line. That burble and sneer you're hearing is likely via the 7.0-liter LS7 the next CTS-V reportedly has under the hood. Sure, Caddy will likely market the next-gen CTS-V to enthusiasts as being "N rburgring tested," but they could just as easily run with the tagline "The New Cadillac CTS-V: Bringing Web Monkeys to Eargasm Since 2006." Spy Photos: Next-Gen Cadillac CTS-V

Spies appear to have bagged and tagged a test model of the next Cadillac CTS-V — obvious to a photog who can pick the whine of a supercharger out of the surrounding ambiance. The Car Connection notes the bubble on the hood, fat meats and more obviously performance-oriented exhaust as evidence of the test CTS's V-ness. So what of rumors of a naturally breathing CTS-V? Could this be a manner of CTS-VX, sharing a supercharged V8 with the Corvette Stingray (or whatever), which would mean a 600+ horsepower super Caddy? Now we're just getting crazy. More »
