Most obvious is the 2010 Cadillac CTS Coupe, but also tagging along were a couple of small hatchbacks, one of which looks to be the 2011 Chevy Beat. One shot even shows what could be the 2011 Saturn Aura, or perhaps just the European Opel Insignia. All that and more in today's episode of Fast Lane Daily. Video after the jump.

<![CDATA[ Detroit Auto Show Continues To Dominate, Snags New Toyota Prius And Lexus Hybrid Debuts ]]> The Detroit News is reporting group vice president and general manager for Toyota of the Americas, Bob Carter, has confirmed the 2010 Toyota Prius will be debuting at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show and will be joined by a uniquely styled and appointed version for Lexus. The Prius was set to move upmarket relative to its former iterations, but with a Lexus version now on the way, Toyota's own marketplace may be getting crowded. But the bigger story is how this news makes things far more interesting for January's Detroit Auto Show.

Jalopnik Snap Jugdement: Considering we'll be seeing two all-new dedicated hybrids from Toyota, the formal debut of the 2010 Honda hybrid, who knows what from Nissan, and with the first fully-formed Chevy Volt revealed just a couple months earlier, the 2009 Detroit Auto Show is setting up to be a serious, next-gen hybrid battle royal.

More interesting to us, contrary to reports of the declining influence of the Detroit Auto Show and the rise of the LA Auto Show, is a trend of increasingly prominent Detroit unveils. Detroit will be showing off hybrids and meat-and-potatoes products — both at the forefront of consumers minds. While the LA Auto Show continues to feature lifestyle products like the Lexus LF-A and the Cadillac CTS Coupe. True, the 2010 Ford Mustang is dropping its top in LA, but that's to be expected given it's a convertible. Ironic, isn't it, that a state so obsessive about portraying itself as green gets mostly vain, luxury and low-volume while a city held up as the symbol of everything backwards in the auto industry displays the future? We think so.

<![CDATA[ Cadillac CTS Coupe To Bow At LA Auto Show ]]> Following a teaser preview at Pebble Beach this past weekend, GM announced the Cadillac CTS Coupe would finally flaunt its doorless flanks for the public at this November's 2008 LA Auto Show. Reports, as well as spy photos and official pres shots we've already seen, indicate the coupe will arrive nearly unchanged from the concept that first bowed at this year's Detroit Auto Show, featuring CTS sedan styling forward of the A-pillar but unique, more-aggressive sheetmetal from that point back. With a center-exit exhaust and a steeply raked rear window, the CTS Coupe is going to be a whole new interpretation of Caddy's design language, and we can't wait to see it at the show.

<![CDATA[ 2010 Cadillac CTS Coupe Strips Down, Shows Some Skin ]]> A Cadillac CTS Coupe without the usual clunky camo was scoped with a long-range lens through a misty Michigan morning by the eagle-eyed photographers at KGP. The photos show that in the transition from CTS coupe concept to reality the designers managed to maintain the large and shapely rear end, but with a few key differences. The tweaks include the addition of safety equipment like red reflectors and although the concept was pillarless, an obvious B-pillar. At least the designers have added a small piece of dark cheater glass, which we're starting to think of as the new requirement for any cut-down sedan-to-coupe platform from a US automaker. Fans of the concept should find these photos encouraging. Full spy report below.

CTS Coupe Spy Report

It took a long-range spotting scope to get it, but we just caught Cadillac's CTS coupe without its heavy camouflage covering. Now all that separates from the production styling of the CTS coupe is some checkerboard tape—and about a half-mile of distance between the camera and the prototype. The taped camouflage, long distance, and slightly foggy conditions all conspired to keep some of the CTS coupe's finer styling details obfuscated, but the overall design treatment is clearly revealed.

In its uncovered state, the production CTS coupe still remains faithful to the original concept, but some minor changes are visible on the prototype's rear-end. The mesh vents which flank the central exhaust on the concept have been replaced with slim red reflectors, in a nod to safety standards on the production model. Also, the concept's license plate housing has been reshaped (perhaps to accommodate both U.S. and international registration plates), while a larger chrome strip adorns the trunk lid. The overall shape to the prototype's rear bumper looks nearly identical to the concept, right down to the careful sculpting at the bottom corners which wrap around toward the central exhaust.

The side window lines look just about identical on both cars, while the truly B-pillar-free design on the concept is less exotic on the production car. Stylists appear to have done an admirable job keep a smooth glass-to-glass effect on the side windows, but a B-pillar is still in place. The front-end on this prototype looks to be straight off the CTS sedan, without the subtle body kit applied to the concept's front fascia.

With our appetite whetted upon seeing this unclad CTS coupe prototype, we're now eager to get a closer look at a similarly finished prototype running on public roads. As always, we'll keep our eyes open

<![CDATA[ Lansing Paper Reports Local GM Plant To Assemble CTS Coupe, Wagon ]]> The Lansing State Journal claims that the recently green-lighted Cadillac CTS Coupe and CTS wagon will be built at the Lansing Grand River plant, the facility that currently produces Caddy's CTS, STS and SRX vehicles. The report also mentions a specially designed 2.9-liter diesel engine that will be added to increase European market penetration, but no word on whether the diesel will be federally certified. Given "Maximum" Bob's diesel antipathy, we think we'll be left waiting. [Lansing State Journal]

<![CDATA[ GM Wants More Money, Fewer Employees; Cadillac CTS Coupe, Saab 9-4X Get The Green Light ]]> GM_More_Horsepower.jpgGM announced in a press conference this morning that its turnaround progress was proceeding so well that significant layoffs were needed. Oh, and please, send money. But the more pressing concern this week is to come up with $15 billion through cuts to the cost of salaried employees, particularly among white-collar staffers, along with spending in areas like health care costs and dividend payments. As part of its second restructuring this year, the company also announced that the 2010 Cadillac CTS Coupe and Saab 9-4X have been green-lighted. Details on where the job cuts will hit hardest were absent, but if our job description had the word "truck" in it anywhere, we'd be dusting off the resume quick-like. More analysis after the jump.

Among the initiatives Wagoner announced today were:

-Truck capacity reduction by 300,000 units, including stamping and engines
-Cutting sales and marketing budgets, particularly in motorsports and promotions
-Holding engineering expenses steady
-Reduce salaried headcount
-Eliminate health care coverage at 65 for retirees, but increase pension payments
-No base compensation increases for salaried employees through 2009
-No cash bonuses for executives
-Delaying next gen full size pickups and SUVs
-Delay V8 engine design developments
-Alternative and small displacement engine design budget increases
-Suspension of dividend payments
-Defer health care spending payments
-Explore sale of assets: Hummer under review, remaining brands focused on profit improvements
-Additional borrowing against assets

Prior to the news conference, an anonymous GM executive familiar with the plan said, reportedly with a straight face, "It will be a clear message on the ways we will restore our health, our measures to realign capacity. It's tough medicine, but it's real." Unlike every wave of job cuts since 1973, this one is REAL. Well, that should do it then.

<![CDATA[ 2010 Cadillac CTC, Cadillac CTS Coupe, Spotted From Behind ]]> Check out the rear end on this 2010 Cadillac CTC, the 2010 Cadillac CTS Coupe but with a 'C' for Coupe instead of an 'S' for Sedan (get it?). Of note is the smooth glasshouse created by the hidden B-pillar and the center-mounted square exhaust pipes contained within the bumper. Also apparent is some sort of hidden door handle, further smoothing out the CTC's lines. Full spy report from KGP after the jump.

The CTS Coupe has dropped a little camouflage, exposing the prototype's B-pillar, and much of the C-pillar for the first time. We can now see Cadillac's extremely clean execution of the side glass, which gives the impression of a B-pillarless design. Prior prototypes had heavy tape and cladding just aft of the Coupe's door opening, which had given the false impression of a less graceful B-pillar design. While all indications are that the CTS Coupe will still have a conventional central side pillar, the clean look now visible on this prototype is pleasing to the eye.

We can also see most of the rear-side-window, and the angle of the C-pillar, which, not surprisingly, matches the design previewed on the CTS Coupe concept. As more camouflage falls away, we expect further confirmation of the Coupe's remarkably faithful transition from Show Car to showroom.

<![CDATA[ Cadillac CTS Coupe Convertible We Never Knew Will Never See Light Of Day ]]> Inside Line's reporting today that GM's killed a convertible version of the hot little CTS two-door. Although to be fair it's hard for us to mourn the loss of a product when we didn't know the General's luxe brand was even thinking of doing a drop-top version of the Cadillac CTS Coupe until we learned of its demise. Still, kudos to the General for the decision because if the convertible version of the CTS Coupe ended up being anything like the most recent series of 'verts from GM — think Pontiac G6 convertible — we're pretty damn happy they won't be building it. Although if they want to build a 'vert version of the Cadillac CTS Wagon, we'd be all for that. True, it'd look ugly as sin, but we'd totally buy one. [Inside Line]

<![CDATA[ 2010 Cadillac CTC Is The New 2010 Cadillac CTS Coupe? ]]> Brenda Priddy's cagey Chris Doane's caught the 2010 Cadillac CTS Coupe on camera. The new Cadillac style is speculated to be actually named the 2010 Cadillac CTC when it officially reaches production in Spring of 2009. Set to be built in Lansing at GM's Grand River Plant, the new coupe will spin out alongside the larger and more in-charge sedan from the General's luxe brand. Otherwise — there's not much more to say other than the remainder of Priddy's spy report below the jump. Check out the high-resolution shot of the new CT...err...Cexiness here.

Cadillac CTS Coupe! - A running prototype - Closely based on the concept, we caught what is obviously the Cadillac CTS Coupe - although sources speculate that name may actually be CTC when it reaches production in May of 2009. Codenamed GMX226, the stylish couple will be built along side the CTS sedan at the Lansing Grand River Plant.

The coupe will feature a backup camera which is not currently found on the sedan, and wont have tradition door handles, but touch pad setup instead. Styling wise, it obviously follows the concept VERY closely. Even the dual exhaust will make production. Only the concept front end may see a modest toning down to bring it inline with the CTS sedan.

<![CDATA[ Cadillac CTS Coupe Concept Press Photos Finally Arrive ]]> We saw the Cadillac CTS Coupe concept in person at the Detroit Auto Show in January. We've also seen the production version of the CTS Coupe in spy photos last week. Despite all that CTSexy action out there, it's taken a wee while for the folks at the General's luxe brand to deliver some of the hot press shot action. Yes, seriously, we haven't seen a single press-managed picture of the talk of the town from this past Detroit show. But despite the wait, we're still happy as hell to have them for you below. Enjoy.

<![CDATA[ 2010 Cadillac CTS Coupe ]]> Unlike the last set of spy photos we saw of the 2010 Cadillac CTS Coupe, these breaking like home run records in Major League Steroids Baseball shots of the new CTSexiness from the General's luxe brand show us a somewhat camo-clad front end. Also, we'll have more shots up momentarily. For the moment, feast your eyes on that Art & Science front end and check out the full spy report from the boys at KGP after the jump detailing all the design differences between the Cadillac CTS Coupe concept from Detroit and this seeming production model.

We caught our first glimpse of the production Cadillac CTS Coupe through the trees of its secret holding pen. With these first-ever front-3/4 and profile shots of a real-world CTS coupe prototype, we can now assess the changes Cadillac designers have made to translate the striking Detroit concept into a production vehicle.

Thankfully, it appears that the majority of the CTS Coupe concept's
lines have been faithfully duplicated on this production model. Some
feared that the concept's radical fastback design might be watered
down, revealing the Coupe's sedan roots, but our profile view proves
these fears as unfounded. It appears that the production version may
have a slightly more pronounced rear deck, but if that's so, it's not
enough to significantly alter the concept's silhouette. The CTS coupe
prototype retains a remarkably flat backlight.

The CTS Coupe prototype further separates itself from its sedan donor
thanks to the elimination of a conventional door handle, adopting
instead the concept's Corvette-style design which hides the door
trigger behind the door's aft cut-line. The concept and production
similarities continue with the Coupe's revised lower side sill, and
the distinctively sculpted waistline, which begins at the A-pillar/
fender vent, and narrows as it stretches rearward. The camouflage
hides whether or not the line terminates into the concept's razor-
sharp point at the C-pillar, but it looks likely that that's another
design convergence between the show- and production cars. Earlier
photos also confirmed that the concept's bold central exhaust will
also reach showrooms.

There are some visible differences between the Detroit Show Standout
and the production model. Cost and feasibility studies have killed
the concept's glass-to-glass side windows, in favor of a visible B-
pillar on the production model. The rest of the changes are found in
front of the A-pillar. The concept coupe's large, CTS-V-style hood
bulge is gone on this prototype (although we'd love to see it return
on a future full-blow CTS-V coupe). And the show car's reshaped front
fenders—which sweep more voluptuously to a revised front bumper,
tweaked front ground-effects, and more dynamic headlight and fog-light
clusters—appear to have been replaced with stock items from the CTS
sedan. It looks to us like the CTS Coupe and sedan will share
identical front fenders and front fascia designs. From there, back,
however, the cars could scarcely be more different. The drama of the
CTS Coupe concept is alive and well, and on its way to Cadillac
showrooms.

<![CDATA[ 2010 Cadillac CTS Coupe ]]> 2010-Cadillac-CTS-Coupe.jpgAn enterprising spy shooter at Car und Driver named Siler — who we're assured has no relation to the bad guy from Heroes — has captured on film what appears to be two camo-covered 2010 Cadillac CTS Coupes. It's the first known on-road spotting of the new deuce-door CTSexiness, and it appears to — umm — look a lot like the concept car that "blew" our minds last month at the Detroit Auto Show. These shots seem to indicate much of what we'd seen in Detroit would make it's way into a production version.

Because although on-stage at the reveal Lutz was mum on production, we got the same wink and nod the boys at C&D got from our sources at the General, who told us it should hit the roads at the end of 2009 as a 2010 model. Actually, to be fair, we only got a wink. We're not entirely sure, but that nod may just have been a nervous tic of some sort, so we can't be entirely certain it meant anything. [via Car & Driver]

<![CDATA[ Detroit Auto Show: EyesOn Design Winners Announced ]]> eyesondesign.png
The Detroit Auto Show opened up with the North American Car and Truck of the Year awards, which was questionably awarded to the Chevy Malibu and the Mazda CX-9. Today the EyesOn Design awards presented four awards for design excellence and at least three of the four winners made sense. The award for the best production car went to the Cadillac CTS-V, which is very deserving. Also deserving is the BMW X6, which won the best production truck. The best concept car went to the Cadillac CTS Coupe. The oddity was the best concept truck, which went to the Chrysler ecoVoyager. Calling the ecoVoyager a truck is like calling a dragon a virgin.

<![CDATA[ Detroit Auto Show: Cadillac CTS Coupe ]]>
Oh, GM! It was so cute to drop this bombshell on us. You heard about it first very early this morning, but now here it is, live and in the flesh—the Cadillac CTS Coupe. Even Bob Lutz himself was amazed that GM could keep this baby a secret, until... well, now, of course. The design for the vehicle is derived from the CTS sedan, and here's the enchanting backstory: Once the sedan was finished, the design team continued to press their luck, coming up with something so beautiful that we're not sure how GM can say no to production. Vehicle specifics were sketchy, but we did learn that the coupe can be adapted for a diesel engine.
