Of course it's not sold here. But the folks over at Popular Mechanics did get the chance to test a 2008 Citroën C5 during a rainy English holiday, discovering that the big Frenchie demonstrates "supreme competence in areas that most owners appreciate most often." That's not even the worst part. Even with the plummeting dollar, their optioned-out Exclusive model retails for the equivalent of $42,700. Suddenly, that 2009 Ford Flex doesn't seem like such a bargain, does it? No mention of the Citroen C5's patented Très Difficile seating system though.

<![CDATA[Citroen C5 Touring Must Be French For "Hard To Fold Seats"]]> The new Citroen C5 Touring is by all rights a big time traveler: comfy seats, a really nice panoramic skylight, all the modern luxury accoutrements, sleek styling if you're into the French thing, and plenty of toting space. The Achilles heel of the car is the folding seats, though. When the fronts seats are positioned for a 6'-tall driver, things get tough when you want to transform to full-capacity mode. The bottom cushion sort of lifts up, rotates over a bar and then does a face plant behind the front seat in a vertical position. The next step is the seat backs.

As you put your entire body weight on the seat back to cram it into the space where it needs to go, you wonder if you're doing it wrong. Leather squealing and carpet crinkling, the whole process is overly taxing—très difficile! Once the seat is down, however, the back end becomes commodious, with a wide opening capable of swallowing big gulps of your favorite crap.

<![CDATA[Who Will Service Your Sinclair C5?]]> How embarrassing. Sinclair's next big thing in the 80's, the Sinclair C5, can be serviced alongside your vacuum cleaner (wonder if this service promise holds up for the jet powered version). Something tells us that nobody with any kind of marketing skills was involved in this ad. 'Hey, let's associate our funny shaped, dangerously slow electric vehicles with an appliance that sucks! Capital idea chaps, well done.' Maybe the ads weren't as misguided as we imagine, considering the C5 sold as many as 17,500 of the little death machines. Still, if the Daily Telegraph's take on the the C5 is to be believed, the tiny trike really did suck...

I would not want to drive a C5 in any traffic at all. My head was on a level with the top of a juggernaut's tyres, the exhaust fumes blasted into my face. Even with the minuscule front and rear lights on, I could not feel confident that a lorry driver so high above the ground would see me. Small wonder that one of the accessories listed in the C5 brochure is a high and bright-red reflecting mast, said by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents [RoSPA] to be a 'must'.

<![CDATA[SEMA 2007: Factory Five Racing Unveils New GTM Show Car Ahead Of SEMA]]> The beans continue to spill on the custom and project cars we'll be seeing first hand this week at the SEMA show. The latest batch of over-baked legumes are these shots of Factory Five Racing's GTM show kit car. If you'll remember, the current GTM's a factory kit car built with bits and pieces of late model '97 to 2004 C5 Corvettes and then packed into a new shell built by FFR. Did we mention it's also got a Porsche gear box? Right — an LS1 or LS6 engine mated to a Porsche transmission. We're not exactly sure what he's done to this particular GTM, as FFR's only is saying that it's "packed with killer upgrades like paddle shifter, carbon fiber details and a complete custom interior..." Yes, but what kind of killer upgrades and what kind of carbon fiber details and what kind of...OK, you get the picture. We do however know the details on the original FFR GTM, so we can use that as a starting point. We guess we'll have to wait until show time to see it ourselves. [via FFR]

<![CDATA[Citroen C5, France's Mondeo Fighter]]> Just as expected, the new Citroën C5 is a close as twins to the C5 Airscape Concept Citroën showed off in Frankfurt this year. That means it's both better looking and less distinctive than previous-generation models. Some might be tempted to describe the latters' distinctiveness as bare-buttocks ugly, though others call it brand DNA. Tamping down its avant-garde roots, Citroën's embued the new C5 with some modern clichés, like an ascending side crease such as that of the BMW 3 Series. In fact, from the imagery, it's as if the company sent its entire creative staff to Germany to gorge on blutwurst until any evidence of French idiosyncrasy evaporated in a cloud of porcine AB-negative. When it comes to car design, let's be careful what we wish for, shall we?

Press Release (partial):

NEW CITROËN C5
APPEAL, PERFORMANCE, STATUS AND QUALITY

With the new C5, Citroën establishes a strong position in the mid-high range vehicle segment, where the key qualities are appeal, performance, status and quality.

The new C5 combines a strong personality, with dynamic performance, status and quality

Respecting the design cues of this segment, Citroën has developed two cars: a saloon whose flowing lines express style and status and a dynamic looking estate that places the emphasis on emotion without forgetting functional convenience.

With the new C5, Citroën satisfies the requirements of executive vehicle buyers in terms of quality and reliability by setting new standards in development, design and industrial production.

• Elegant thoroughbred styling

As a saloon or estate, the new C5 stands apart for its distinguished styling and elegant personality. Its dynamic lines and clearly marked waistline give it real on-road presence. Inside the car, a well designed
cabin and premium materials contribute to on-board comfort. Passengers benefit from a prestige design that makes this new road car a vehicle of refinement and distinction.

• Remarkable dynamic qualities

On the road, the driver enjoys exceptional driving sensations, and the passengers are lapped in comfort. To achieve this, the new C5 offers a choice between two types of suspension: Hydractive 3 Plus suspension or metallic suspension. Both are based on the running gear of the C6 executive saloon. The Hydractive 3 Plus suspension is aimed at customers keen to take advantage of the Marque's latest developments in technology, comfort and safety.
The metallic suspension is a particularly competitive option. It provides a more direct feel while maintaining the comfort specific to Citroën.

These dynamic qualities are combined with a range of three petrol engines and four HDi diesel engines, as well as a full choice of gearboxes.

• Exemplary driving pleasure

Driving pleasure takes on a whole new dimension with the new C5. The driving position, which resembles a cockpit, is fully focused on the driver, and features a second-generation fixed-centred controls steering wheel. Clear, concise driving information is displayed on three dials with annular needles, inspired by the aviation world. Well designed acoustics enable the driver to give the road his/her full attention.

• Uncompromising on safety

The vehicle meets the highest standards in both active and passive safety with ESP as standard, a stiff body structure and nine airbags (seven standard and two optional).

• Produced in an ISO 9001 and 14001 certified plant

The Rennes ISO 9001 certified centre has long experience in producing executive vehicles, particularly with the launch of the C6 which is now attaining remarkable levels of quality. This site has made a strong
commitment to sustainable development and the environment, and also holds ISO 14001 certification.

DISTINCTIVE STYLING EXPRESSING PERFORMANCE AND ELEGANCE

C5 saloon: sculptural exterior styling

The proportions of the new C5 (4.78m long, 1.86m wide and 1.45m tall) place it at the top end of the large road car segment. Its distinctive styling expresses prestige and performance. The strong character of this saloon is expressed by its sophisticated lines, modern proportions and original body style. Depending on the angle from which it is viewed, it resembles a thoroughbred coupé or elegant saloon. The new C5 stirs the emotions from first glance.

The assertive front end makes a statement of strength, with its large air intakes and long incisive headlamps.

The headlamps - positioned on the bonnet with its two pronounced ribs - flank the large chrome chevrons stating Citroën's identity. The wide tracks and flush wheels underline the perception of a vehicle that hugs the road.

The profile of the saloon reflects efforts to optimise aerodynamics. The extended roof line underlines the
flowing proportions of the body. The large glazed area with a third side window lets the light flood into the cabin. The high waistline and strongly marked wheel arches clearly identify the saloon as a vehicle of status. The 2.82m wheel base suggests a generous cabin.

The strong, distinguished character of the new C5 is also expressed at the rear. The concave rear window identifies it as one of Citroën's large road tourers. The signature two-part boomerang lights give the rear-end an assertive look. The generous volumes convey the impression of a car with a strong on-road stance, sitting squarely on its wheels.

C5 estate: performance and space

For the estate, Citroën sought to create a car as sophisticated as the saloon but with more generous
volumes. The new C5 estate meets the needs of customers looking for a car that combines style and
personality with presence and interior space.

The C5 estate boasts elegant and dynamic exterior styling, with a stylish front end identical to that of the
saloon and a rear end of determined, powerful appearance. The body style reveals a strong identity and real versatility. The flowing profile of the C5 estate expresses a perfect balance. The vehicle is 4.83m long, 1.86m wide and 1.48m tall. The proportions are generous but the additional volume has no impact on the overall lines.

Reflecting the sculpted design of the saloon, the rear end features geometric shapes that suggest width and convenience from a horizontal perspective, while maintaining an elegant and dynamic appearance. The new C5 estate expresses values that will appeal to customers looking for modern concepts tailored to their lifestyles.

Refined interior styling

The opulent, sophisticated interior of the new C5 is an invitation to travel. The dashboard conveys an immediate impression of quality and sophistication with its full, solid forms. The taut lines symbolise precision, while the flowing curves express dynamics. Dissociated from the central console, the dashboard enhances the impression of space and comfort. The design of the door panels reflects the choices made in terms of elegant styling. Overall, the cabin conveys an impression of quality and robust strength.

The interior design of the New C5 perfectly matches the exterior styling. It subtly combines sophistication and innovation, generosity and space.

A complete range of engines and gearboxes

The new C5 boasts a full range of engines and gearboxes to meet the full range of customer requirements in
its segment. The range comprises:

? three petrol engines:

- 127 bhp DIN 1.8i 16V (92 kW EEC)
- 143 bhp DIN 2.0i 16V (103 kW EEC)
- 215 bhp DIN 3.0i V6 (155 kW EEC)

? four diesel HDi engines fitted as standard with the particulate filter:

- HDi 110 DPFS (80 kW EEC)
- HDi 138 DPFS (100 kW EEC)
- HDi 173 DPFS (125 kW EEC)
- HDi V6 208 DPFS (150 kW EEC)

A wide choice of manual and automatic gearboxes is available, depending on the engine and trim level.

<![CDATA[More on the Citroen C5 Airscape Concept]]> Oh, you thought you were done with the hybrid Citröen C5 Airscape concept? Not even close, Johnny. Following last week's leak, Citröen's now releasing details on the car that hearkens the company's next C5. A flurry of adjectives accompany the release, including sophisticated, elegant, powerful and exclusive. As mentioned previously, it uses the company's UrbanHybrid system, which prevents noise and vibration when the engine stops and boosts engine torque when needed. But wait, there's more. Much, much more. [via Carscoop]

Press Release: CITROËN C5 AIRSCAPE

Object of all desires

Citroën is unveiling C5 Airscape at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show. This exceptional concept car is a new take on the most beautiful of vehicles, the cabriolet. C5 Airscape features powerful, dynamic exterior styling and an interior of exclusive design, made for driving pleasure and the comfort of three passengers. The original mechanism of the folding roof underlines the overall sophistication of design. Styled for maximum appeal, C5 Airscape also delivers maximum performance. New-generation Snow Motion traction control provides a level of traction close to that of a four-wheel drive. Other useful features are provided by the UrbanHybrid system. This unit prevents noise and vibration when the engine stops and boosts engine torque when needed. At the same time, it shows real respect for the environment.

An expression of power and elegance

C5 Airscape is a car to turn heads. Its elegant proportions and sleek bodywork convey a sense of performance with a promise of power. The innovative folding top is an invitation to climb on board and take to the road. The interior layout, with its premium materials, delivers the highest standards of on-board comfort for the driver and all the passengers

Power and sophistication

A car of elegant lines, C5 Airscape conveys an impression of strength and sophistication, with its cleanly drawn body lines and ribbing at the top. The powerful look of the body is brought out by the raw, intense grey of the bodywork. This colour, whose intensity varies according to the light, gives C5 Airscape an elegant and precious look, consolidating its status as an executive vehicle.

Through its assertive front end, featuring large air intakes and long incisive headlamps, C5 Airscape makes a statement of performance. The headlamps - positioned on the bonnet with its two pronounced ribs - flank the large chrome chevrons stating Citroën's identity.

The profile of C5 Airscape reflects efforts to achieve optimal aerodynamic design. The roof line, particularly large windows and tapering chrome-plated door handles underline the flowing lines of the body, while the high waistline, clearly marked wheel arches and 19-inch wheels clearly identify C5 Airscape as a vehicle of status.

The powerful design of the front and rear ends highlight the on-road stance of C5 Airscape. The highpositioned rear lights extend the waistline and optimise the vehicle's dynamic looks. At the same time, a double chrome tail pipe underlines the car's luxurious design as does the concave rear window, which clearly identifies C5 Airscape as belonging to the family of large Citroën saloons.

The sophistication of C5 Airscape can also be seen in the original design of the folding roof, whose glazed upper part lets light flood into the cabin. Made entirely of carbon, this roof opens and folds away simply, without detracting from the looks of the concept car. It folds away automatically, without assistance, and without the driver having to open the upper part of the roof storage area in the boot.

C5 Airscape reflects the purest traditions in vehicle design in that the metal-look roof with its textile lining resembles a roof made of canvas - the emblematic signature of executive cabriolets.

Leisure and sophistication

Fully upholstered in dark brown leather, the cabin of C5 Airscape conveys an appealing impression of sophistication. The particularly well designed seats suggest luxury and precision. The central section of the seats brings to mind the links of a watch strap, while the decorative stitching on the edges of the seats reinforces the taut, well-muscled look of the whole.

To add the finishing touch to the executive design of the interior, the gear lever knob is set with leather and chrome. The chrome echoes the metal strip underlining the air conditioning controls and central console.

The design of the driving position on C5 Airscape was also dictated by the pursuit of driving pleasure. Refinement is the key word for the driver's surroundings, as reflected in the specific design of the instruments and their layout.

The driving position features a fixed-centred controls steering wheel that brings the main comfort functions and driving aids (navigation, radio, cruise control and speed limiter, on-board computer) within easy reach.

Considered as points of contact, the pushbuttons feature an original covering resembling the texture of skin. They create a strong, fast-reacting sensory interface between the vehicle and the driver.

The sophisticated design of the instrument cluster on C5 Airscape reflects the requirements of optimized ergonomics and ensures that information is laid out legibly. The three dials feature annular needles, symbolising an advanced level of technology. The needles run around rather than across the dial for greater legibility and a more attractive design.

The air vents next to the dials underline this cabriolet's powerful character, as does the upper part of the instrument cluster, which takes the form of an air intake as on a competition car. The overall effect is enhanced by the clean, sculpted design of the dashboard. Its straight lines symbolise precision, while the soft curves symbolise dynamic performance. This configuration contributes to full driver control and exceptional driveability.

Driving sensations and improved respect for the environment

Styled for maximum appeal, C5 Airscape also delivers maximum performance. This concept vehicle is equipped with a V6 HDi engine associated with a particulate filter and able to run on biodiesel, along with an innovative Snow Motion traction control system for a performance close to that of a four-wheel drive, and UrbanHybrid technology for low fuel consumption and CO2 emissions. As a result, C5 Airscape boasts remarkable levels of performance that show real respect for the environment.

Technology serving the environment

Through its powerful engine, particulate filter and UrbanHybrid system, C5 Airscape illustrates Citroën's ability to reconcile vehicle performance with respect for the environment. With its reversible alternator-starter and super-capacitors able to temporarily store large amounts of energy, the UrbanHybrid system delivers real benefits in terms of environmental protection, driving pleasure, acoustic comfort and vibration control.

In Drive mode, when this concept vehicle is travelling at under 6 kph and the driver's foot is on the brake pedal, the engine cuts out. For maximum driveability, it starts again instantly and automatically as soon as the driver releases the brake pedal. When the car is at a standstill, fuel consumption is zero and CO2 emissions are around 24 g over a combined cycle.

Further, the onboard network (air conditioning, radio etc.) is powered by energy recovered during the deceleration and braking phases. This brings savings in fuel consumption and eliminates additional pollutant emissions. Engine torque can be temporarily boosted, when overtaking for example, for a high-speed take-off. When the car is at a standstill, the UrbanHybrid system prevents noise and vibration in the cabin, for the comfort of both passengers and passers-by.

<![CDATA[Citroen C5 Airscape Concept]]> What might a Citroën C5 look like as a diesel hybrid with a hardtop cabrio roof? That fictional animal is reflected the C5 Airscape concept, PSA's entry in the Frankfurt auto show style sweepstakes. The concept moves the C5 upscale, with swank appointments from the Citroën design HQ, along with a showcase diesel-electric powertrain dubbed UrbanHybrid. It also hearkens the newly redesigned C5, slated to get a longer wheelbase and more upscale position. We'll see if that arrives in Frankfurt as well.

Driveability and performance in all circumstances

The executive positioning of C5 Airscape is reflected by the presence of the 208 bhp 2.7 V6 HDi engine and particulate filter. Combining power and fuel economy, this engine develops 150 kW EEC (208 bhp DIN) at 4,000 rpm for torque of 440 Nm at 1,900 rpm. Right from the lowest speeds, it delivers smooth, gradual power with exceptional operating comfort. Driveability is further increased by a 6-speed automatic gearbox.

To deliver a high level of performance and improve active safety, C5 Airscape features Snow Motion, an
innovative traction control system with extended functions. This system offers remarkable performance in terms of vehicle traction and "take-off" on surfaces with low grip, such as snow for example. The benefits, already significant with conventional tyres, are further increased when the concept car is shod with winter tyres. In this configuration, the performance of C5 Airscape is close to that of a four-wheel drive.

Taking the wheel of C5 Airscape is a total and continuous experience in driving pleasure. This is a
car that brings leisure within easy reach.
