And how will BYD attempt to beat Toyota? By building Toyotas.
Look at the F0 that BYD was showing at the shows last winter. Now google the Toyota Aygo (a product developed jointly with Citroen and Peugeot) and look at the photos. It’s the same car. Go ahead, Toyota, file your law suits. Lots of luck with that.
This is how BYD will build their brand, by building knock-offs of successful brands. As long as the Chinese government protects its industries by not honoring and enforcing international patent, trade mark and copyright laws, there is no such thing as a level playing field.
At this juncture, a little isolationism and economic protectionism sounds pretty good.
@mdensch: It's ok though cause people are just warming up to North Korean automakers (mainly Hyundai) so don't expect people to go blindly purchesing knock offs from a chinese automaker that no one has heard of.
@PowerTryp forever Minardi: North Korea is fifty years from becoming a manufacturer of anything other than counterfeit bills, heroin, amphetamines and hatred.
No, I have to say no to all Chinese cars. I can see this now, sorry, time for a rant.
It is bad enough that they sell us parts that are Chinese junk. The white box crap you can get at the dealer or the big box stores. The shit that falls apart as you put it on, or wears out so god damn fast that you need to fix it every damn year. The worst of it is they re-box this shit and for the repair industry WE take the blame when it fails. Yes, I know we have choices but when you explain that white box junk is FUCKING JUNK but costs 75% less than the OE part that probably is Chinese, Taiwan, Mexico, Brazil or wherever the fuck other hole in the earth will assemble brake calipers for .05 cents a hour you are going to get the deer in the headlight stare.
"Oh, I'll take that one."
I look over every damn box I see now and if it says China I am looking elsewhere, I am going to lose customers because I put on higher cost/value parts but since I have to stamp my name on the job, warrant it for 12months/12,000 miles it damn well better be a decent part.
NOW China wants to bring cars here? Pffft, bad enough having to explain to the customer as they stand in the bay that their "insert car name here" will be down for a few days to order the special widget that no one stocks. Imagine having to explain to them that the entire widget is junk, yes, these damn Chinese cars will be widgets until they can prove otherwise.
As of now, until I see one of these...things.... they are Tampons, good for a few days but once you use them they are bloodied and in need of replacement.
/end of rant, sorry, it has been a long morning of looky-loo's trying to help in the shop.
I'm truly pissed off I can't buy parts for stuff which isn't made in China.
It's more economically smart, whoa...smart, be careful...to buy one $10 item than 4 $3 items which last for a shorter period, combined than the $10 part which is well-made.
Much like cost-per-mile, 99% of the population glazes over at the mere mention of having to think about something.
BYD was a little battery manufacturer that made no cars. They got into the car business by buying a tiny bankrupt automaker that produced 100 units a month.
BYD is aspiring to produce 13 million vehicles annually by 2025. They sold 60,000 units last year.
@Bertone77: It harkens back to BYD's early years and their single-bladed airplane propeller, which vibrated test pilots into a fine red mist. Shortly thereafter, BYD switched to cars.
@Ash78: Actually BYD is the acronym for "We are going to nuke your cities, towns, and hamlets until they are a flattened rubble wasteland, decapitate and disembowel you, shoot your dogs, melt your rap CDs and make slaves of your woman and children. ", or something like that.

I see automotive Multiplicity. The car won't so much as be able to do anything but creep in circles, endlessly.
