You know, now that there's a manual option, this thing's kinda tempting, if i was in the market for a TSX, Passat or Volvo. But I'm not. Nor will I ever be.
They should have called it Insignia, though. This is a nice car, and the Regal name is only going to remind people of a car that was decidedly not nice.

It's relatively attractive, but gorgeous? No. I really don't see anything remarkable with this car, except that it does a nice job of filling in the gap where GM used to want Saab to be.
In the USA, there's so much backlash against the old man image of Buick, but in China, it's a pretty luxurious midrange brand and somewhat energetic with their lineup.
That said, China didn't get a chance with the land barges of yesteryears.
I go to work on foot and I usually see 2 or 3 Opel Insignias parking or moving around and I always think "these cars look better than almost any BMWs or Mercedes". I love it! And I'm quite happy about you Americans getting a taste of it too!
@YankBoffin: I actually saw one of these in the wild a few months back. Without the badging, I would have been hard pressed to ID it. In hindsight, it was almost as heinous as the Cimarron. Almost.
@YankBoffin: I was almost tempted to pick up on a 2000 Catera a few years back as a daily driver. The massive depreciation made the purchase price cheap, it doesn't look that bad, it's sort of sporty, and there's lots of goodies. A little digging around for info convinced me that would have been a dumb move.
How does it compare with the Malibu in ride and handling? I was very impressed with a rental Malibu a couple years back and have since hoped the General would apply the same level of engineering to a smaller sedan. Perhaps this is why they hadn't.
I particularly like the interior, which I think is at last better than the re-done Lincoln MKZ.
I don't know about gorgeous, though. It does certainly possess pleasing curves and is very elegant, I think it falls just short of gorgeous. It just doesn't seem to have the right presence, at least not in pictures.
I will look forward to seeing it in person at the LA Autoshow.
@snapoversteer 'bout to get told: It's pitched more at the TSX, both in size and intent, and you're buying it over a TSX because a) it has more power, b) it's hugely better looking, c) it has a much nicer interior, d) you don't mind/actually enjoy the fact that you have to explain to people why you bought a Buick instead of the car that everyone else you know bought.

@FormerlyPreferredCustomer: Yeah, I remember the chart. FWIW, I don't understand the TSX, either, and one might note that it hasn't exactly sold a million units.
You have all given me excellent Jalop reasons that I might choose a Regal, but what are the midsized sedan buyer reasons? I ask because I sense that this thing's going to be priced higher than an Accord (though I hope it undercuts the TSX). It's just my opinion, but I don't think it has enough badge cred (or valet cred or however you want to put it) to attract much of an audience. Like I say, I'm not rooting against it; quite the opposite. I just question whether it has a market.
@sdvictor: Correct, for the first year of production the car will be built in Germany, however it will be built in North America starting in the second production year. The facility has not been announced yet, but the current best bet is Oshawa.

Then again, the GTO worked so well....
Sigh.

I wish we did have more sleepers.
On the other hand, the reason that we don't have them anymore is that people didn't buy them because they looked like, well, sleepers.

This is why I like the 300C SRT, and cars like it. Haul-ass sedans just have appeal to me.

But I'm having second thoughts. It seems a helluva lot more appealing than the other cars on the market that it would directly compete with.
Manual transmission is pretty cool too. How long has it been since a Buick was offered with one??
