I'd have included the corncob car in the list. It's light, aerodynamic, has a pedestrian-friendly skin, and can be constructed from renewable materials.
Best of all, any cornfed kid in the heartland can make their very own car.
Not so sure lemon wheels would be good for an open-air car -- at least without wearing goggles.
As much as I enjoy all the fun and silliness you guys get up to at Jalopnik, it is the genuine love of cars epitomized by this selection that has made me a fan. Great choices - an instant short list for any car loving lottery winner (maybe the Roadster/MX5/Miata over the RX8 but kudos for at least mentioning the STi)- and great writing (I almost started to get choked up reading some of it). You made my day.
I would add the new SHO to the list. I've gotten to drive one on a long trip. It's as good as anything I've ever driven. Better, in fact. Don't count America out.
I'm going to say raise your glass to Sir Colin's "Add Lightness" that brought to spots to your list... but don't drink too much, you'll through the weight distribution off for the ride home.
I too am thankful for the Evo. I was thankful when I got mine (Aug 25, 2003, on my wife's birthday), I was happy when it drove us home with our baby boy for the first time (Feb 8, 2007, a B-17 flew over us on the way home), I've been thankful for the runs to the north Georgia mountains and I'm thankful for the ride it gave me on the cloverleaf on the way to work this morning. Getting to have that kind of fun every day is a treat.
I'm surprised the GTI beat out the MazdaSpeed 3 (as in...why would anyone buy the GTI, over the 3). The 3 is faster, handles better, cheaper, and is more reliable, and looks cooler to boot.
Simple, because no matter how good the Speed3 is, it is and always will be a copy of the real thing. The GTI gets all the props because it has earned them. All Mazda did was take VW's props and clean them up a bit.
Sadder still is the Speed3 isn't even the most respected Mazda. It sits in 3rd place behind the much more worthy Miata and RX-8.
Sorry, but winning the Spec Sheet Grand Prix isn't worth much to real car guys and gals.
I'm thankful for these because:
-all these are available used as wagons (SUVs are just hopped up wagons to me) or hatchbacks... and in one case, a van
-available with stickshift
-you can buy used for a reasonable price... or will eventually be able to.
-are big enough for someone with two kids.
@Novaload: Yeah I figured at least someone would think I was nuts for listing the Caliber or PT Cruiser... but as a cheap used car, I'd still buy it.
$15,000+ for a Caliber? Hell no... unless it's a SRT4... But for $5000 or less? Sure. Won't be long before that happens as I see a 5 speed 2007 Caliber going for $8000 right now.
@petersterncan: And I just realized I missed a couple of key cars to be thankful for:
-VW Golf/Golf TDI
-Ford Escape
-Saturn Vue
-Saturn SW
-Toyota RAV4
Silly Sammy. You're thankful for an overweight arse dragging snobby croutwagon whilst the lithe and sexy Italians are building proper soul stirring hot hatches (Alf Mito & Abarth 500).
See, you scribes should realise that is ME, yes ME who is always correct and everybody else who doesn't agree with ME is wro...
Oh shit, sorry Sammy, sorry Jalopnik, sorry America. I'm such an arsehole. An arsehole who forgets that poor poor America wouldn't know about the two said automotive wonderments being they're not available in the land of milf and money.
@LandofMinos, cast thou evil bum dragger to thy scrapyard:
You sound like a disgruntled European, no offense to normal Europeans. Its hard to be thankful for something that you cant get for a few years (the 500) Our muscle cars have a certain charm, just like an Alfa or a Fiat 500 have, speaking of Alfa the (standard) Mita is about as sexy as a cross-eyed pig I do like the GTA though.
@gearhead_318: BZZZZT! Sorry you're incorrect. disgruntled yes, European no. Never mind you still go to round two...
I come from a land who builds proper muscle cars but the driver would sit on what you would call the wrong side. We even convert American muscle cars to right hand drive!
@LandofMinos, cast thou evil bum dragger to thy scrapyard: My bad, your Australian then. Is Left hand drive that bad? i ask because its been 11 years since i visited a country that had LHD (Ireland) and i couldn't drive then. BTW thnx for the GTO
@gearhead_318: Local road rules in some states make it almost impossible for LHD cars younger than 30 years to be registered. Hence the commonality of RHD conversions.
i am truly torn with the decision between pics 1 and 11............ holy s**t.. how about an green/aero-bodied caterham that looks like a corn cob. my dreams are complete...
mid-western america, watch out for me in the next 15-20 yrs or so... when i can finally build it...

So, how come Gawker got the nice car and Jalopnik gets the corncob?
Oh wait, never mind.

But I can understand how people who are into real hot rods or pre-1950 old cars are put off by a FWD economy car posing in the style of an old car.
That's how many see it I think.
But I also see a very practical station wagon available with stick.
And, while they're not like Corollas, they're not bad in terms of reliability either.
And the SRT4/turbo models are apparently pretty fast.

-VW Golf/Golf TDI

... and for the same reasons as I cited earlier.
