If the character Bruno makes institutional Austria cringe, it's because SBC has found a way to uncover the only lightly suppressed homophobia that still runs rampant in much of that country. Power to him.
In an unrelated note, am I the only one that thinks that chromed armored vehicle would look right at home with a three-pointed star on the front? Next year's G-Wagon refresh, anyone?
Tom Green meets Jackass, but with better editing and a bigger budget.
I had an appreciation for Ali G, but after Borat, I just started empathizing with most of his targets more than anything. I guess I see high-profile celebs as fair game, but obscure, regular people as off-limits.
@Ash78: I fail to see the humor in most of that adolescent BS in all you've mentioned. Once again, moments of brilliance interrupted by long stretches of stupidity.
@Ash78: I don't feel sorry for people who let their guard down to reveal how racist, homophobic and religiously brainwashed they really are. I do feel sorry for all the others who get placed in unimaginably uncomfortable situations without deserving it. Though they did sign the release and I do admit finding their squirming funny, though cringe-inducing.
@Sportwagons, more popular than Grimace: I do think that, above all, he exposes a lot of groupthink or "herd mentality." I bet that few of his targets would have been so frank with him had they not been in a crowd (or in front of their buddies). It's sort of like the way cold-reading psychics get a foot in the door, then carry it on and on, beyond the target's normal threshhold for "WTF?!"
There's definitely artistry to it, I'm just not a big fan of it.
@Ash78: If you can get a bunch of obscure, regular people to gleefully sing "Throw The Jew Down The Well" then you've demonstrated something important about obscure, regular people. Also, I really like that some folks, when confronted with his weirdness, react in a really decent and even noble fashion. It evens out.
