    @dwegmull: From the size of that plume, I'd guess they're using some kind of bypass valve so as not to send full pressure to the turbine. You don't want to go balls out on a test run, especially where there isn't any run-off room.

    Seriously? 360 hp in a streamliner should be good for way more than 170 mph. Perhaps they are being conservative. Look at that frontal area! And the cd has to be at least below that of a Prius, right?


    I wouldn't be surprized if they hit the 170 just to come back next year without modifications and break that with a 200 mph run.


    All in all it's pretty cool. Any real Jalop can appreciate being different for the sake of being different, no?

    On designing a high-speed steam powered car for the 21st century, I would make sure that the steam is under sufficient pressure to foam the milk for your cappuccino just so.


    It is just a moving kettle after all.

    I would like some small vertical front fins on something that long, personally. Doesn't look like it could deal with gusts too well with only the aft ones.

    @layabout met the real Santa: Oh come on, I used to play with steam tractors when I was a kid, they're cool and you know it. How could you not love a 12 ton engine that's 10 feet tall and makes 35 HP? I'll take a Case steam tractor over a Scion any day.

    'Automatic shutdown systems' - isn't that just a fancy way of saying Lucas electrics?


    It seems hard to believe that the steam powered record has been overlooked for so long. Nearly any car top that now. And the aerodynamics look rather crude compared to current practice for jet and piston powered record cars. It really looks like something Campbell himself would have felt right at home in. Still, I wish them great success.
