It's rather impressive a company with close to 6 billion euro in debt can do all this... o yeas, now I understand... they have a close relationship with Tata. All good then.
@aSoundofSleep Forager of Pistons: I'll admit I haven't followed the business side of the European auto industry much, but same question here. I never once heard of Fiat as a "financial powerhouse" before--or maybe it's just because everything is so beaten down right now, but Fiat's holding on.
Fiat has money. They really turned themselves around the last several years and were making decent profits. If you're a car company looking to expand, now is the time to do it. The entire industry is depressed, so if you're willing to take the risk, there could be a huge up-side considering you are basically spending pennies on the dollar (or euro, in this case).
Fiat is putting together their own version of Vehicle Voltron.
You already have Fiat, Ferrari, Maserati, Iveco, Alfa Romeo and Lancia making up the Italian (Air) Team. They are getting Chrysler, Dodge, and Jeep to make up the American (Sea) Team. Now they need someone to make up the Land Team. GM Europe, with Opel and Vauxhall, could provide the necessary components to defeat evil and protect humanity from the Drule Empire.
Italians make the best cars anyway, why not let them have the whole industry? Pickups and SUV's would lose all their trendiness if they were all Iveco Massif based, and everyone else wold be rolling in Pandas, 500's, and Alfa GTA sportwagons.

Sergio must be fed
He's eating up auto makers
Soon left for dead
He's breakfasted on Chrysler
Now he wants Opel for lunch
It's all you can eat
But these meals pack a punch
How much can Fiat afford
For this car-buying buffet
before their pockets are bare
And their creditors they betray
So Sergio may want
to push back from the table
before gorging himself so that
To walk away he is unable.

The big thing will be knowing when to stop.

This is too much win-win-win to actually occur.
