humm.. they could just throw some BB's in the tires.. dynamic balancing.. works great on jeeps.. mind you i'm sure it would play hell on the tpms.. but who needs that anyway.
A guy I used to know - he's dead now - used to mount tires for the Air Force in Florida. He said that if the wheel came up badly out of balance, he'd pop the beads and turn the tire 180 degrees on the rim. That'd usually cut the need for weights by more than half.
Personally, I think it's the cheap castings. When you look at most of the tires, the little pad printed dot lines right up with the valve stem so it isn't improper mounting or cheap tires.
I asked the guys at the local Pep Boys if they're ever going to get some speed weights in stock, but they just looked at me funny. I hate the freakin' Midwest sometimes.
If you can fit it into your tight schedule, you could dedicate another half-second to coming to the conclusion the P-51 was probably named after said horse.
But hey, who has that kind of time? It's easier just to fire off some shit on the interweb.
Couldn't they hide the weights a little better? One of the major selling points of cars like this are its looks, and sure, not everyone is gonna look for it, but surely, surely, a huge international corporation could do better.
I'm really glad California is banning lead weights, because not a day goes buy that I don't see some little kid chewing on those cursed things. Do your part today by thanking a liberal for California.
While, yes, California did basically carry the election for Obama, the Governator is a Republican. In case you haven't noticed, he has tossed around a fair share of retarded bills. Repeated FAILS of legislation against violent video games anyone?
@brickyard: Ever notice how soldiers who have gotten wounded in battle never die from lead poisoning? Its not because Iraqis are using lead-free or total-metal-jacket bullets. In fact many men in wars of old have gone their entire life with bullets lodged somewhere in their bodies and none have died from lead poisoning.
They don't even have evidence of animals dying from lead poisoning, its just their eviro-religion that causes them to think that way.
@Flathead Smith: Your comments are completely asinine. California makes laws like this because we like our groundwater lead-free and our children healthy. We don't want to end up like this:
@jodark: I actually can't tell how serious your comments are, because they seem like you are trying to communicate what you think is a legitimate point, but I like to think more of humanity that to believe that anyone could be that ill-informed.
Do you have any evidence to backup your points that can somehow legitimately refute years and years of scientific research? Regardless of your views on anything, what is the crime of trying to make people's lives better through a healthier environment?
@jark: Guess what? It is impossible for groundwater to be lead-free. Why, you may ask. Well believe it or not lead comes from the ground. Stick a shovel anywhere and you'll find at least trace amounts of this killer, because it is naturally occurring metal. Believe it or not lead is a valuable commodity in most of the world and has many uses.
@Flathead Smith: Oh, that's a good point. In fact, radon is naturally occuring too, so that must not be harmful either! Oh, so is oil! Let's just go ahead and let that flow into the water that we drink too! Let's not limit our exposure to anything that is harmful in excessive quantities because it is all naturally occuring!
@Scandinavian Flick: @jark: You guys are completely disregarding the cost/benefit ratio. There are toxic things all over your household, yet you haven't died from them because you don't purposely ingest them.
Also, eco-fucksticks convinced the government of North Dakota to throw out thousands of pounds of donated venison that low-income people because lead-bullet fragments were found in them. Meanwhile, a 5-year study concluded that those who eat meat shot with lead have THE SAME lead levels in their body as anyone else! SO. What the fuck. You clearly don't know what you are talking about.
Finally, its called cost/benefit ratio. If thousands of people are going to die every year from diseases transfered by misquitos in nations that have a problem with them, it is in their best interest to kill said misquitos and worry about the long-term/latent effects of DDT later, because THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE aren't dying anymore and can now do other things besides fight easily preventable diseases.
Stop watching that bullshit-Story of Stuff video. It neglects dozens of facts, skews statistics off the fucking charts and flat-out LIES TO YOU. Here is a brilliant critque of said Story of Stuff, and this time it has facts, not unsubstantiated socialist propaganda.
@jodark: uh huh... I would actually take the time to provide a thought out response to your ill-informed, backwards way of thinking, but I know it isn't going to make any difference, so why should I bother? Your arguments are all over the place, and completely irrelevant. Your logic is flawed, and your attitude is misaligned at best. If actual science is dismissed as propaganda by you, then what hope do I have of convincing you otherwise?
I will spend my time on people who don't have their head that far up their ass.
I think you actually need to read my post. Nowhere did I say that we should excessively consume things that are harmful to us. jark said he wanted to drink lead-free water and I pointed out that that is not possible. But like the liberal that you are, you twist the truth into a lie and then state it as fact. I have been thru out the world and I will tell you that the vast a large portion is a toxic wasteland create by totalitarian statist who thinking is not much different than yours. You have called me an idiot several times and I am sure as a liberal you have deep emotional issues which do not allow you react in a normal way with people, so I will just pity you.
Remember it is the totalitarian statist who will not allow others to have differing view points on life. I guess if you had the means at your disposal you would force everyone around you into groupthink, because that is the nature of a totalitarian. Well friend I guess you think your pleased as the liberals take over, but remember the liberal does not like to be confined by the rule of law and so as it denigrates into the rule of whatever, you will think have your wish and then you will really howl when your thoughts don't match the thoughts of the despot ruling over you.
@Flathead Smith: Do you actually re-read anything before you post it? There are so many grammar errors in there, it actually made it difficult to read. I can only imagine how many times you must have stopped mid-sentence to rewrite them.
Interesting that you accuse me of twisting statements, considering that that is basically how you started this thread. You made this into a completely irrelevant political argument.
Your initial statement was an insult to "liberals" for banning lead weights. Have you actually tried educating yourself on an issue before you argue a point? Mostly in the interest of time, and staving off my own boredom, I will link the first article I found on the issue:
"According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), about 65,000 tons of lead wheel weights are in use on cars and trucks in the U.S., and it is estimated that at least 3 percent of wheel weights fall off of cars and trucks. USGS states that the discarded wheel weights are ground by traffic and the particles are dispersed by wind and rain, eventually finding their way into the water supply. By the CEH's estimates, an annual 500,000 pounds of lead are introduced into California alone due to lost wheel weights."
Be careful. This references studies conducted by actual scientists (probably those dirty liberals, OMG!!)
Your willful ignorance on issues you establish such vehement opinions on will make your life very amusing to others, so I will just pity you.
IF this were designed by a nuclear engineer, the car would have a wheel made out of Alloy 22, measuring exactly 18.000" +/1 0.001" and would have the CG about the axis of rotation at the origin of the wheel, +/- 0.005". The probablilty of failure of the wheel would be 1x10^-8, and would be machined on 10 different machines until everything was just right. Five different non-destructive tests would be performed, with 3 detructive tests from the same heat of material. The wheel alone would cost $100,000, but dang nabit, it wouldn't need wheel weights.
Of course, I would rather just buy the whole car for 1/5th cost of the wheel I just designed and accept the $2 weight addons. Just make sure they're not made out of lead, disposal of mixed waste will really sink your bottom line.
@maximum-sienna: Now imagine if the entire car were built with such quality and exacting specifications in mind... 500,000 mile engines would be for chumps.
@maximum-sienna: Yeah, that pretty much sums up my whole attitude towards it.
If the cars are performing in the manner that Wes and Ray have been singing about, then they have been doing them with the wheel weights in there. So if we acknowledge that they are great-handling cars, why do we care?
@SirNotAppearing: And again, the car would cost as much as a Veyron. I don't think anyone can complain much about the durability of cars nowadays when 150k miles without anything major is pretty normal, and seeing some cars with over 200k running as everyday drivers isn't that rare. Many cars require no major maintenance until 100k miles! I remember being a kid when any car that made it to that was considered very good.
@leavethegun-takethecannoli:They should just remove weight by drilling a bunch of holes on the other side of the rim until the wheels come into balance.
