There, that's it. No more brand dilution, some platform sharing, but its enough to REALLY differentiate the different models. I would also not be against bringing the Opel Brand into U.S. as a replacement for Saturn, that can be sold along a re-organized Saab brand. They will be a new, different company (fo realz this time), not burdened by GM mismanagement and corporate bull-shit. Opel/Saab would be a completely seperate entity, privately funded and retaining all the patents from GM. Gone are Pontiac (Diluted), Hummer (Money-Pit), Satun (Nice idea, didn't follow thorough) , GMC (Worthless)
@Baron Schm Von Shamwoüzen memes ur memes.: Oh, and I would bash the unions over the head, and somehow dump off all those pesky obligations. Unions are impeding progress. That's why I'm pro-bankruptcy, then let the fun (and brand-chopping) begin.
@Baron Schm Von Shamwoüzen memes ur memes.: Oh, and I forgot. Go ahead and let Chevrolet and Cadillac keep building the Slade/Tahoe/Suburbans. They may kill their CAFE numbers, but they're high-margin vehicles. I would switch them to uni-body ASAP, like Ford are doing with the Explorer and Jeep with the Grand Cherokee.
@Baron Schm Von Shamwoüzen memes ur memes.: You cut Cadillac short. They should still have the Escalade and CUV. It makes sense to offer high profit vehicles as a part of your high profit lux brand.
I like the Opel idea. Not sure if it will have any more of a a splash than the Saturn Opels did. But I like a lot of their cars.
Also, GMC is a license to print money. I don't like what the brand at all but I don't think there's a way to turn in into a trim line.
@philipmein: I wouldn't turn it into a trim line. I would kill it altogether. The brand is taking up advertising space, and the brand is completely diluted. When you can buy a Sierra for a similar price to a Silverado, there is no brand differentiation, the brand does not stand for anything. It is important for brands to mean something to consumers (Weather it is actually meaning to petrolheads is a completely different matter.)
The four core brands shall have new names. Cadillac will be called the BO-Motor Division. GMC will be relabeled as JBC. Chevrolet will be renamed ClitCo. And Buick will be simply known as "Tim".
Of the current Brands: Chevrolet: this one HAS to be one of the core brands Cadillac: another core, stronger and better now than anytime in the last 25 years. Pontiac: they've already announce it will be "niche products" so expect Pontiac G8 by Chevrolet or some such crap Hummer: already out on the way out the door Saturn: already on the way out the door Saab: if they can't seel it they might just set it free GMC: it is redundant, just make all the trucks Chevys no one would care Buick: they are huge in China and probably a nice little profit center in the US too even if the cars have been boring since 1988.
So that leaves: Chevy, Cadillac, Buick, and umm....ahh.. Oakland?
Who needs four? Keep Chevrolet and Cadillac, kill off the rest while merging the few non badge engineered vehicles worth keeping from the other brands into those 2.

The rest of the entire world's GM presence is second to those four. And unfortunately, that isn't a good balance.

Cadillac - doing well now, will continue their upward trajectory if led properly
Buick - Give it a couple more unique models and there is a solid market for this brand. Can't really say that for Pontiac, I'm afraid.
NASCAR - Think of the cross-promotional synergies!
