Where else can I find a smallish 4-door with a manual trans, inline 6, RWD and a stellar suspension?
I wouldn't touch one of these V12 cars (or any 6 or 7-series for that matter) with a 10-foot articulated driveshaft. Too big, fat, ugly, heavy, complicated and destined for buy here/pay here lots just a few years down the road.
In fact, I'm not sure what I'm going to do when I wear out the current one out because I really dislike the current 3-series cars as well. The 1-series is cool, but I need a four-door.
Gah, fuck me for wanting the kind of car that made you famous in the first place, BMW. No, wait... fuck you.

That is what drew me to my first BMW. I drive a '00 E46, and love it as a daily. I was shopping and considering everything, and this car was really the only thing that fit my requirements of RWD, manual, decent gas mileage for my commute, comfrotable for my 6'4" ass, and reasonably fun to drive.
I totally and completely share your sentiments on everything. I'm a coupe man myself, so I will probably go with a newer M3 or 335ci next.

I'll also add that I feel like I can still do my own work on my e46, up to and including major systems. To date, and about 72k miles, it's been stone reliable. I'm not sure I could say that about the latest iteration.

I definitely have love for the wagons. A 5 series wagon would be damn nice too...
The latest ones are still kind of a mystery as far as reliability. Most of the stereotype for BMWs being expensive to maintain is from ones that weren't regularly maintained, or people who bring their car to the dealer for service. I was surprised at how easy they are to work on actually. Especially with a Bentley repair manual in hand. If you are familiar with wiring, then there really is no problem that can't be taken care of personally with a few one-time-purchace specialty tools.
Stupid 36mm oil filter cap...

I actually ran into some 7's at the dealership while taking in my 3 for service. The interior is... underwhelming. The Porsche interior in the Cayenne (and probably Panamera), on the other hand, was breathtakingly beautiful.

Was it a tan leather interior?
I always attributed the modern BMW interior's failings as a result of consciously terrible color choices to force it to look "modern".

As much as I hated bangle designs, the de-bangled ones are actually proving to be worse and worse looking than previous generations.
Personal opinion though.
Having driven the Panamera, it's hard to imagine any car in this market segment even coming close. It has the power, it has the comfort, it has the handling, it has the luxury, and argubaly, it has the looks, though that is very subjective. I never found the S550 or 7-series attractive myself, but that isn't to say that there aren't people out there that do.
Also, the Panamera interior is BAR-NONE. Seriously, the most fantastic interior I have seen to date, short of say, a Rolls Phantom Drophead Coupe, and thats pure luxury, not a mix of sports car and luxury.

Exterior? BMW beats Porsche, but the Porsche has grown on me just a little bit.
So that leaves the interior and "feelings". I've always believed that the interior matters more than the exterior since the interior is about you. Plus, I drive a lot and most of the time I spend with the car inside. Anyways, when I went to the BMW dealership and saw an unlocked 7 series, I thought to myself, "Hey, a 7! For that price, it must be really impressive inside"
I got in the car but felt like I was sitting in a higher quality version of... my car. It didn't feel like the uberluxury car that it's supposed to be, just a big, fat 3.
On the other hand, the Porsche 911 and the Cayenne have very unique stylings that exude different presentations. I had the luck to sit in both of these cars and was impressed by the wholly different emotions they drew out of me. Though I have never seen or been inside a Panamera, I am ASSUMING (making an ass out of me) that it will stir something in me as well.
Overall though, both very good cars completely out of my budget. Please excuse my entirely passionate and irrational rant :)

Having only seen the Panamera interior in pictures (which was quite attractive, and certainly more attractive than the BMW interior), I won't second guess your assessment.

Pretty please with a veiled threat of a never-coming ass-kicking on top?

What is it with these things? If you want a serious V12 mill to drop into your project, I don't know what's up with Bimmer flagships but there's no shortage of nice big engines that wind up on the hill.
