I love these "poseur" vehicles. I don't want a useless 400hp M3 when I can have a 300hp car that looks the same for like what, 20% cheaper? All these folks and their rants against a great looking car with too little horsepower. Gas is not plentiful, so looks trump power in my opinion, especially since only assholes need to speed from a green light so I can slowly pull up next to them one mile later at a red light.

@Number_Six: Correct me if I'm wrong, I think the "S" badge actually refers to a particular level of mechanical equipment and some very quite discreet trim. In other words, it's not nearly as meaningless as something that amounts to an appearance package.

@not4one: Well, the S-line used to be the top-line in Audi badassery. The current S4 has a 340 HP V8 which would be pretty damn awesome... if the 420 HP RS4 didn't exist.

Why so much flak for people who want to improve the look of their car? Oh I know. Because now the "true" M owners can't be instantly recognized as an "true" M owner. Their M's have somehow been diluted. Waaah. Quit yer moaning and stop being so self involved. If you bought an M because you can be instantly recognized as having spent more money, you did the wrong thing. I bought mine for the engine and suspension.

@BuddyHinton: I don't think too many people will be fooled by this. Some, sure. The problem is that this is mainly unneeded tacked on plastic bits that don't improve performance. It's the performance improvements, and the integration of the whole package, that makes the genuine M desirable and worth the staggering price.

The upside of this is that it might make it a little easier for folks who might actually use the M performance to get one. The posers will likely flock to, and be sufficiently content with the trim bits.

The suspension stuff is not to be overlooked. I drove a standard Z4 coupe with the sport suspension and it was significantly more aggressive than the standard bits. And depending on the model, the aesthetic stuff is not bad either. The M Sport stuff makes the Corvette stuff look like nothing more than a tacky collection of stickers and ugly polished wheels...oh, wait....

These new BMWs have the potential to be vastly improved by new, taped on bodywork. Throw a little water on all that flame surfacing. I wonder if those Saturn plastic panels might fit?
