In reply to BMW Buried In Snow: Reason #544 To Avoid Canada
Reminds me of the Jeep commercial where all you see is a moving mound of snow as something burrows along underneat the surface. Then along comes a stop sign with just the top of it peaking out of the snow, and you can see the Jeep's brake lights under the snow when it stops at the stop sign. I liked that ad.

Canada got six feet of snow? That's likely amazing news to the other 33,000,000 people who don't live in the Calgary area, where this snow drift formed.

/I better go call my friend in San Diego to make sure she survived that storm that blanketed Chicago.

@Number_Six: Makes me wonder whereabouts in Calgary it was. I know the Evergreen area got it pretty bad. It wasn't bad in Cederbrae, but there was a nice 4-5 foot tall drift along the one side of the road. I spent a good 4 hours or so shoveling on Saturday. I should have taken pictures of the poor bus stop that I dug out...

@BaconSandwich and the generic grey civic of doom: It was drifting quite high in a few places. I live in Crescent Heights and there is not much snow there. I'm pretty sure it did not snow six feet anywhere in Canada on the weekend.

@Number_Six: Yeah, I was going to say, my place in Bankview just south of downtown hasn't recieved more than a foot tops through all the storms, but with that brutal wind on Friday, I can see a drift like that forming.

In reply to BMW Buried In Snow: Reason #544 To Avoid Canada
I have to relate a story.

My wife and I moved to the Colorado front-range, SW of Evergreen, @ 9K feet of elevation, in January 1998.

We're both D/FW natives. This was going to be adventurous on a grand scale, but we both embrace adventure.

October of '97 had a truly nasty storm in which people died on the road to/from the airport because they got buried, and nobody could get to them.

Our first really heavy snowfall experience was about 44". This is after we'd been prepped by a couple of 15"-20" storms.

On my way home from work, in downtown Denver, 'bout three hours after people started urgently telling me to leave...there's a storm coming...I came across a couple of guys who'd abandoned their CRX w/Florida plates, roadside.

I stopped and asked what was up. They said they tried to get to their folks' house, but couldn't make it up any of the hills.

I said, "hop in, I'm going mostly that way, anyway." It was all of ten minutes out-of-the-way, if that, and I hadn't seen any other vehicles in a good while.

    I'm driving a '94 Grand Cherokee Ltd., V-8 w/QuadraTrac and new BFG A/T tires...I'm unstoppable.

I take 'em home, and wish them well.

Two days later, when we could actually get out of the "neighborhood", we were going down the sole paved in/out road, and I said to my wife, "hey, those guys I gave a ride to the other day...they're walking back to their car..."

She suggested we stop and give them a ride back. I said, "nah, it's only about a 1/2 mile more, and you'll see why we don't want to get involved in a minute."

When we reached the wide spot in the road where the CRX was abandoned, she said, "did their car get towed?!"

I said, "oh, it's there...you see that three inches of radio antenna sticking out of the snow? That's it. Now you understand why I wasn't going to give them a ride back...they've got a solid two hours of digging to get it out, and I didn't see shovels in-hand."

Snowplows + Mother Nature = pain

At least no one drove over it.

Also, all that snow in the interior will only be a problem if it ever gets warm enough in Canada to melt it.

If this vehicle is near a road, it might be possible that a sander or plow truck broke the window. I didn't read the story so I don't know the details. That broken window is horrible. But if the snow doesn't melt, the damage will be minimal.

But the snow, the snow is awesome. Six feet in a weekend. Great! I love when the state shuts down the roads. Doesn't happen often in CT though.

@leavethegun-takethecannoli: I once was witness to a hair over 7 feet in 4 days (December 2001, the Buffalo area). It was really amazing. However, it was lake-effect snow, so it was light and fluffy, and compacted relatively fast (down to a mere 3 feet or so).

The streets were like canyons, and violating the driving ban was awesome. Lose it in a corner? That's ok, the banks are soft, and no one else is out!

Maybe snow broke the window. We should track down that Toronto-based wanna-be-rasta baldhead and make him pay for it.

In reply to Wards Ten Best Engines For 2009: A Closer Look
I'm happy to see more diesels in the US, but unless someone starts marketing them down range a bit, then i just don't get it. You're seriously advocating the 335d? It's $50K without options; over $60K to get it nice, and even then, you wind up with an automatic that won't keep pace with the 335i. Nice torque; that's cool. But the entire point of the plant is fuel economy. Let me have the 2.0l diesel with a stick in a light weight 3 series for less than $35K!

Why no LS9? That's a fantastic engine. Driven gently, it delivers better fuel mileage in the 'Vette than my Subie ever does. And yes, I drive the Subie gently too. Damn brick.
