    @layabout: Ironically made in South Carolina, then promptly stuck onto a boat to leave our shores. Same deal with all the ML-class Mercedes diesels since 1997.

    I'm in awe of that engine, but X5 xDrive sounds as unnatural as a BMW that's available only with a slushbox (yes, I'm bitter over the 335d).

    BMW is going to do well, thanks in part to great marketing.


    Mercedes already sells diesels in basically every SUV, plus the R-class and E-class (sedan only). But hardly anyone knows about them.


    BMW seems to be making sure EVERYONE knows about their diesel launch.

    @layabout: Does Land Rover make a diesel? I suppose they could've gotten one from the Ford parts bin, but it might be a little too late for that now.

    I want more details about the emissions controls before I'd touch this. While it's proven in Europe, I want to know more about what tailpipe molestation was needed to make California happy.

    @Rust-MyEnemyEnjoysPleasure!!!!: Deal, my apologies. I just love a good diesel, and they're finally catching on. Kind of a risky gamble though, as BMW is just matching Audi and Audi hasn't sold any yet. "Wonder how they'll do in the current economy," I mused to myself.

    @The Name's Ash78, Housewares: According to the BMW US website, the exhaust cleaning system involves a white wall that breaks black bits into smaller black bits, which then go down a pipe and have some blue liquid squirted on them, releasing newborn puppies out the exhaust. OK the last bit was mine, but I'm still a little unclear on the complexities of the urea injection.

    This engine, by the way, is awesome. I've not tried it in an X5 but it was incredible in the 335d I had last year for a fortnight. My driving license was getting seriously warm at one point.....

    I had a friend who, in a 40mph speed limit, was pulled over for "Excessive Acceleration"! At no point did he exceed 40, just the attendant policefellow didn't like what he saw....
