@Rock517: I still like the idea of the once-rumored electric Rolls Royce-- that actually would make a lot of sense, in a way. Even a Volt-like series hybrid would be practical, because one could waft around town in near silence, as well as being smug as all hell.

Can prick and smug coexist or is it a zero sum game? If you are 25% smug can you be 85% prick? Or would you have to be 75% prick? So, if this will make someone 75% smug, would they still be able to be 85% prick or would their prickness go to 25%?

Why do people buy these? It's so expensive and the amount of money you save at the pumps is no where near the amount you spent on upgrading to a hybrid version. If you want good MPG then get a Diesel.

@GreenN_Gold: Well, electric motors make peak torque at 0rpm, and less at extremely high revs, to make a long story short.

The idea in a car like this is to provide low-end grunt, as well as not pissing away gas when you're trolling around in a parking lot, for example. You don't need 500hp or whatever to do that.

Now their hydrogen prototype, I liked. Yes, I can actually get interested in that fuel type due to the amount of power a hydrogen engine/hybrid drive could theoretically produce. Plus, water as a byproduct? Pretty cool.

... but this? Way to cave in to the bandwagon, BMW.

@Flagrant German Fanboy: I think they are looking for a little green cred as well as boost fuel economy in the short term to meet the new CAFE and European standards. Hydrogen is a great fuel (it can even be used in slightly modified IC engines), but there is no infrastructure for it thus making it a much longer term (if ever) alternative.

@Flagrant German Fanboy: BMW helped develop this 2 mode system with Mercedes (then Daimler/Chrysler) and Government Motors (then General Motors. This is their version. I wish they had produced the X3 version using a diesel engine and the two mode system instead. I guess this gives the something to throw up against the oh so smug Lexus LS Hybrid. The Hydrogen 7 is a nice concept, but until Hydrogen can be produced without consuming more than it's energy equivalent in fossil fuel, it is not practical.
