Yes, it's murderously ugly, profoundly expensive and to own one you would have to live with serious mocking and finger-pointing.
But I like it.
I Like it because it isn't an off-roader, and you don't have to suffer the compromises of carrying off-road equipment you won't use. Addionally, you won't have quite the same stigma as the "Yummy Mummies" in their X5s on the suburban school run, or any number of Escalade-steering brain-dead celebrities. Excuse the venom.
I like it because, with a load-liner in place, you can throw crap in the back and then do 500, fast, comfortable miles.
I like it because I'm 6'5 and there is notably more head and legroom inside than the previous E61 wagon.
I like it mostly for the preposterous concept of something this ungainly being able to fry all comers on your favourite stretch of blacktop.
And finally the ugliness. Which I don't like. But, as a design graduate, I can't really see how a car which does all those things and has that much interior space could really be styled much differently and kept a BMW identity. So i'm letting it off the hook even for that.
So, in brief, I think the BMW 5GT is A Good Thing.
I like it. It's strange and bloated and the dual-gate rear hatch doesn't really make sense, but I like it. From the preview video, it felt like it was focus grouped to death, and came back around the other side to ludicrous, which is something the market is completely lacking.
Yeah, I like frameless glass, too. But on four door with quarter lights in the rear doors? Not so much. Unless they do like the '56 Chrysler hardtops and find a trick way to make the quarter window roll down too. Otherwise, it's entirely too much like the wretched, cheesy '79-'81 Chrysler R-body.
Also, frameless glass totally sucked on the Neon, yet rocked on Subarus. Which is one of many reasons why I wont buy a Neon or a new Subaru

Half hatch? WTF? Is that the dumbest idea I can think of?
Well, no - I can think of a lot of really dumb ideas. But the half hatch is right up there. When they included an openable window on the 4-Runner tailgate, I thought that had some merit, some utility. But this? Why the hell would you ever open the down low hatch and peer myopically into the cavernous arse of your gigantic CAR when you could just open the whole gate and stand on your hind legs like usual?
@Elhigh: I dunno, I kinda like the two piece hatch. From experience, opening/closing a big, bulky hatch just to put one or two small items can be a bit of an annoyance. Especially in foul weather. Not enough of one to buy this hideous thing, but it's a clever idea nontheless.
And, yes, the roll-down, station wagon-y rear window on my 4Runner is full of win. It's great for hauling stuff like lumber that requires an open window, but it's also great for ventilation. I can crack the window open from the dash, along with my sunroof, and pull fresh air into the cabin without the A/C and without too much wind noise.

That open hatch looks very much like the trunk of one of the most fun cars I've owned - an early Rabbit Convertible. Sadly, the rest of the BMW suffers from the comparison.

I like the idea for some reason but can't think of anything better than that... thereby proving your point.

Actually I was thinking more like:
Dud. Sales Failure. WTF?
While I commend them for attempting a five passenger, 4 1/2 door sedan/fastback/hatchback thing, it's not going to sell.
Odd works in some markets. Not the one which costs upwards of $50K and tends to not reward creativity or utility.
