LeMons and Jalopnik are certainly turning into meme-generators. And the more funny stuff that gets out there, the sooner I will see another Jalopnik sporting a secret sign. Like the skull drive shaft. Or even the LeMons logo...or this
Speaking of racing,I am heading to Road America this weekend for the Vintage racing. Pictures will surely follow on Monday if anyone raises their hand.
Ahh, Hondas, E30s with awesome themes, a Miata, a Neon, and the V8olvo.
So far, the Top 10 is basically a giant How To Succeed In LeMons guide. If the head gaskets all hold, we'll have a close race; if they don't, you know my favourite.
Sweden's answer to the Plymouth Valiant (except with, you know, handling and brakes), with twice the tirefrying oil-burning awesomeness as Jakob and Gustaf intended, and now painted lutefisk-magnet yellow? Couldn't possibly lose.
Looks like some tough competitors out there. Three BMWs holding up the bottom end, and four Hondas at the top.
Now that I've figured out what the Cerdos Voladores are, I might have to root for them. I practically had a Fiesta Movement. I hope they can come up with a truffle or two for their troubles.
I'll never forget the day when I was talked out of an E30 for LeMons. Now I lay awake at night, dreaming of the day when I can lay waste to fascist aggressors with a true car of the proletariat.
The #95 Jetta and its drivers were fast...no doubt. There were catching me fast at the end (I was the last driver)...but if you could watch my video you would see I was losing at least 5 seconds per lap by short shifting due to fuel starvation. IOW, I wasn't as slow as you might think, but was in full 'maintenance for the win' mode.
Hats off to the Jetta, Saab and all the other teams that raced us hard but clean. I have lots of respect for drivers who want to win, but aren't willing to punt you to do so.
Good job to the winning team... Good theme too. I'd love to be a hater since they are in a BMW, but it was an 'e' right? Also they drove clean, at least when I was out there..
Recommendation:
To keep lemons, lemons, I think they should give all cars that are fast to begin with a 100 lap entry penality to enocourage more fun stuff. All 325i and faster models, all miatas, all CRX/Integras and Foxstangs plus whatever I missed... give starting lap bonus to the odd stuff....
BTW, how was that Jetta so stinking fast? VR6? $500 my A%^
@Spinnetti: We don't want to eliminate the E30- or even the dreaded Miata- from LeMons, but we do want to encourage new teams to exercise more imagination in their choice of cars.
The Jetta was so fast because the drivers were just that good; I don't think the car was cheating any worse average.
As many of you know the E30 has a saddle tank design and fuel has to be pumped from one side to the other before being pumped to the engine.
We never put more than 7 gallons in the car and nobody drove much over 2 hours. I filled the tank on the last stop and put in 6 1/2 gallons. The car was on empty and cutting out, but we made it!
We weren't the fastest car. Don't break and stay out of the penalty area!
The last driver of the 95 car was awsome! We would have been out of gas in 8 minutes, but if the race had been 8 minutes more he would have caught us anyway.
@SuryakantiGabulous: That Jetta was definitely breathing down your neck at the end- other than Altamont '07 (which featured a 7-second difference between the #1 and #2 cars) this was the most dramatic LeMons finish we've ever seen.
I was the driver of the Saab for the last 3 hrs. and we congratulated both McQueen and that e30 its' deserved win. BUT.... the reason that e30 win was a massive fuel cell with less stops. McQueen and I were running flat out, and whatever that Jetta was, it wasn't your standard! :) I think we've about reached the peak of 1985 Saab performance. The jetta set a faster lap, and the mustang that got crushed. Saturday night in the lead sure felt good, though... ;)

My friend's old F150 is yet another shitty E30 too.....

EDIT: The German "ss" looks a lot like a capital B... which explains a lot about a popular paint-and-body chain.
