Mercedes-Benz Makes Mockery Of United States Democracy Unveiling BlueTEC SUVs

There's good news for those getting bored of strolling around town in the Bluetec E-Class because Mercedes-Benz is announcing the U.S. availability of the 2009 GL320 BlueTEC, ML320 BlueTEC and R320 BlueTEC. In an effort to be hip and trendy with the U.S. market, Mercedes-Benz faked a campaign speech, but in all reality it looked more like a riot. As the two BlueTEC ML320s rolled onto the stage along came with it a nice sample pool of a typical campaign supporters who really, really care about BlueTEC diesel technology including one special older lady (pictured)—see: cougar—who acted out her dreams of becoming an auto show booth babe by waving her hand up and down the vehicle as people took pictures.

Mercedes To Exhibit Fishy "Bionic Car" Concept From 2005 At NY MoMA

The "Bionic Car" was a 2005 concept car from Mercedes inspired by a sea dweller from tropical latitudes: Ostracion Cubicus — more commonly known as the boxfish. The concept car's being included in an exhibit called "Design and the Elastic Mind" at New York's Museum of Modern Art. The exhibit's all about "showcasing trailblazing innovations in the fields of design and science. While a concept car that looks vaguely fish-like isn't normally reason for inclusion in an art exhibit, the "Bionic Car" was the first to showcase Benz's Bluetec diesel emission-control technology. As our love affair with diesel is well documented, we can't think of a better inclusion to an art exhibit. Full press release after the jump. More »

Mercedes E 300 BLUETEC Turbodiesel Gets A BRABUS Boost

Does your BLUETEC E-Class Benz not give you quite the power you were hoping for? Does 400 lb.-ft. of torque leave you cold inside? BRABUS, tuner of all things Mercedes, might have an answer to your uniquely affluent problems. A new upgrade from BRABUS boosts power by 47 horsepower and about 50 lb.-ft. of torque, to 258 and 450, respectively. Besides a lot of power for just over $2,500 (body kit extra), the new modification also meets EURO V emissions standards and is backed by a three year/62,000 mile warranty. The company also offers an E 320 BLUETEC kit for oil-burning yanks. Pics and press release below the jump.

Detroit Auto Show: Mercedes GLK revealed officially, again, amidst uncomfortable old people sexual innuendo

Aside from adding yet another word to it's name — it's now known as either the 2009 Mercedes-Benz GLK Vision 320 CTDi Bluetec Freeside Concept, or the 2009 Mercedes-Benz GLK Vision 320 CTDi Blutec Townside Concept, the latter loses off-road pretensions — the most notable thing to occur at this second official unveiling was the creepy flirting taking place between Dr. Z and Kim Catrall. Seriously, after watching Kim speak of her "admiration" of Dr. Z's "tight package" we had to put up with his promise to "show her around afterwards." Trust us, it sounds creepier in Gerglish. We had to leave when Dr. Z promised to "heat it up in here." If Ray wasn't such a slave driver, we'd be well on our way back to the hotel to take a scalding hot shower.

Frankfurt Auto Show: Mercedes C-Class Estate and Other Hybrids

Car techies have been clamoring for a diesel hybrid, assumedly to match an efficient fuel-burning construct with an electric drive system to make a giant synergy sandwich. Here in Frankfurt, Mercedes is showing a few hybrid prototypes that may hearken what's to come. A few of those combine its low-C02 Bluetec diesel system with its parallel hybrid system, while one — the ML 450 — combines electric with gas using the two-mode torque-split module developed with GM and BMW. The diesel hybrids include the flagships S 300, debuting this year, and the S 400, revealed at the 2005 Frankfurt show. Word is the S 400 will hit the streets in 2009. Of course, the main event is the C 300 Bluetec Hybrid saloon — a version of the new C-Class wagon fitted with a diesel-electric powerplant. With 224 horsepower and 413 lb-ft of torque, the C 300 prototype can get from zero to 62 mph in 7.2 seconds, while meeting Euro 6 emissions standards. Mercedes says we can expect a market launch sometime after 2010.

Volkswagen Ditches Bluetec, Returns to TDI in the US

We knew it wouldn't work. Well, we didn't know know. But from its inception Volkswagen's plan to glom on the Mercedes-led Bluetec clean-diesel spec seemed an unnecessary concession. As corporate strategies go, better plots have been hatched by crusty sea scoundrels in the bowels of rusting shrimp boats. Now, according to a German magazine, Volkswagen is reverting to its TDI branding for diesel models planned to arrive in the US in 2008. A VW spokesman offered an Official Line of Reasoning that was imprecise to the point of non sequitur, that is, sharpened US emissions regulations. Then there's the whole part about people in the US actually knowing what TDI is. [CNNMoney] More »

Over The Back Fence: M-Class To Go Hybrid?

We're hearing from our UK-based friends at Auto Express that the Teutonic side of the German-American not-so-much "merger of equals" could be readying a diesel-electric hybrid M-Class. They're quoting an unnamed senior source at Mercedes as saying
"It's a safe bet that our first move into hybrids will come with the M-Class, using a 3.2-litre V6 Bluetec diesel."
It looks like if Mercedes does end up moving in this direction, they're hoping that by linking the two-mode hybrid system, developed with BMW and General Motors, to a Bluetec diesel engine they can eclipse the Lexus RX400h in fuel efficiency claims. Not the worst idea — but will problems and issues surrounding the sale of the Chrysler Group possibly force them to put this on hold? Who knows, I mean, we're just speculating away here. More »

New York Auto Show: Global Schmobal, 2007 World Car of the Year Awards

The major product offensive launched by Audi has paid off at the 2007 World Car of the Year Awards. The redesigned Audi TT took Design of the Year, and the RS4 cleaned up World Performance Car for two globe-shaped trophies to add to the display case back at Audi global HQ. The Mercedes-Benz E320 Bluetec used a high degree of turbodiesel precision and luxury along with some urea to win in the World Green Car category, and the Lexus LS 460 employed its long wheelbase to roll over some balloons and take the New Jersey World Car of the Year title. The glad-handing award remained undecided. More »

Choice Quotes From the Detroit Auto Show

Besides Thomas Weber's "Wee-Eight" comment, Mark Fields' description of Mercury as "Not Ford" and the apparent "I am going to cum all over you" line from Changfeng's Chairman Li, we only had Alan Mulally's "Ford blands" bit to keep us giggling. Let's just say Detroit didn't leave us with anything quite as golden as "ALUMINUM UND SHTEEL!" or "Your wife, my wife..." Regardless, there were a few gems that came to us away from the show floor. Transcribed verbal snapshots after the jump. More »

Bluetec, 4Matic, Ocean Drive and Emmitt Smith: Mercedes-Benz Detroit Press Intro

See! Zetsche on Ice! Before he sauntered across the street to slake the thirst of a teeming mass of boozehound autojournos and sycophants at the Firehouse, Dr. Zed took to the ice rink after a rather inexplicable intro involving a man on a sled pulled by some ripe-smelling dogs. What followed was an orgy of winter sport including ice dancing, hockey and other whatsits while 4Matic-equipped Benzos cruised the frozen H20 on Bridgestone Blizzak tires. More »

Detroit Auto Show Preview: Mercedes-Benz Vision GL 420 Bluetec Concept

Hey, here's one that's not on embargo — it's the Bluetec diesel concept GL 420 Vision, or is that Vision GL 420 Bluetec Concept diesel? Either way, Mercedes is continuing its cleaner-diesel strategy for the US by showing a version of its largest SUV, fitted with aqueous urea-spraying, emissions-scrubbing whatnots, in Detroit. The oil-burning proto-ute is a torque monster, producing enough foot-pounds to pull a grizzly bear out of hibernation, and with a stated miles-per-guzzle number of 24, it appears to be an answer to the conundrum of large living in a gas-dear world. Mercedes says its new line of diesels will be 50-state compatible when they arrive in 2008. Now if only diesel would fall back under three bucks a gallon.

Edumunds Can't Find Clean Diesel in Fontucky: E-Class Bluetec Test

While the urea-injection system won't come online until the 2009 model year, the kids over at Inside Line managed to smuggle an E320 diesel into the Golden State for testing. The seemed to like it quite well, calling it a better value than the E350, even with the $1K price premium over the gasoline model. But they were shocked — shocked — that they couldn't get low-sulfur diesel in Fontana, CA. Unless they were at California Speedway, or on their way somewhere else there is no reason to go to Fontucky, ever. The poor mid-sized Merc must've been traumatized. More »

The New York Times Gets Irreverent: VW Tiguan Highlights "Friends With Benefits" Relationship Between Automakers

It would appear even the mainstream media's got a bit o' irreverence left in it — even if it's only in the web pages of the Old Grey Lady. Here's the caption from one of the pictures from yesterday's slideshow on the new VW Tiguan concept on the Times web site:
The engine was developed through the friends-with-benefits trifecta of VW, Audi, and Mercedes-Benz.
Even though it's "just" digital ink, we're relishing what was probably a spectacularly spicy thought process highlighting the friendly (and precise) m nage trois of VDub, the fabulously precise Audi, and the German side of the German-American hybrid. The Times is of course referencing that the three automakers have combined wits, like Ace & Gary, to help create the next gen of diesel power called Clean TDI, an engine system using Benz's Bluetec technology. Bluetec, of course, is the nitrogen-oxide reducing system for diesel that uses urea to clean the car's emissions. Urea, of course, is an organic compound found in urine. So does this mean that in this threesome, pissing is involved? Wow — I wonder if the Times realized that? [Hat tip to Greg!] More »

Diesel Bedfellows: Audi Officially Backs DaimlerChrysler's Bluetec

Word came down last month that rival German automakers would horn in on Mercedes-Benz's Bluetec clean diesel program. Today, Audi made it official that such a hookup with DaimlerChrysler is forthcoming, with the first Bluetec engines arriving at Audi dealerships in 2008. Audi will still refer to its diesel powerplants under the TDI moniker. And yes, the new engines will satisfy emissions regulations in all 50 states, via Audi's own emissions control technology. Thanks for asking. More »

Mercedes Planning Mild-Hybrid S-Class for 2008?

Ze volks at Auto Motor und Sport report Mercedes wants to bring a mild-hybrid version of its S-Class to market by 2008 (see Reuters story here). The production model would be an offshoot of the S 350 DIRECT HYBRID and BLUTEC HYBRID concepts the company presented at the Frankfurt motor show in 2005. Those cars employed a compact, high-torque electric motor integrated into the drivetrain of a direct-injection V6, though the market variants will likely involve additional fruits of a hybrid partnership with GM and BMW. No word on the diesel version. More »
