My recollection of '60s and '70s era Benz dashboards is that they were protected like Fort Knox: under-dash and center-console partitions held in place with a gazillion screws and washers. With a similar vintage Ford or Chevy you'd just reach up and behind the dash to access the instruments and accessories. With the Benz, not so much...

That makes Friday's spotless Subaru-branded (Matsushita aka Panasonic-made) CD player look pretty tame. Nice find!

@Elhigh: Still, Matsushita FTW. I have the Best single-DIN cassette player ever made that didn't include a graphic equalizer, and it's a Panasonic.

Also, their capacitors are second to none. Got one on a dead car-stereo amp that I'm gonna pull and use when I recap one of my old motherboards.

My 68 280s had an even sweeter Becker radio- it was AM/FM/MW/SW, but it also had an auto seek function.

You would push a chrome bar under the dial and the motorized tuner needle would move as it would seek the next clear station.

I remember being amazed when I got the car that this function even existed in 1968. Listening to Radio Prague in Savannah was a bonus.

Not to be difficult, but it's a Becker radio, not a Blaupunkt.

@PDQ2: If you look closely at the dial, between the M and K bands, it says B L A U P U N K T. Becker radios of the period had a tab above the dial with the Becker logo and the model type.

Murilee, did you get any pix of the rest of the interior? Exterior? That's pretty amazing.

Murilee, you have no clue how valuable all of those little interior switches are. That little black knob that controls the lights? $88.00

And it's a standard-sized DIN bay, isn't it. See, That's What's Wrong With Cars Today.

@Seta Velloso: Agreed. I miss standard and double DIN openings, seeing how I've been horribly disappointed with every factory stereo I've ever encountered.

Great find! Looking at what US makers were doing with their optional radios at the time shows we had the AM/8-track in FoMoCo vehicles. You could get an AM/FM but you could not get an AM/FM/8-track from Ford in 1968.

GM never did offer an integrated radio/tape deck in 1968. You got the factory 8-track player mounted under the dash.

MoPar had nothing to offer other than AM-FM in 1968 but you could get a reverb in the Imperial.

So along comes 4-band coolness, something we have never done in all the years of automotive radio in the USA, from Blaupunkt. Oh well, we did stick record players in cars back in the 1950's...LOL! *bump*skip*bump*skip*

    wow?

Record players... and 8 track players.. in cars?

LOL whats a record player doing in a car?

Shit.. Im just happy to have a CD deck. Wait 5yrs and ya gonna have a MP3 port and thats it..

Along with a fancy shmancy graphics display..
Along with the ability to make coffee, blow ya and give ya directions..

Man.. when I was a kid.. we had to walk 4 mi through the snow..

    LOL.

Id take the Benz, pick up the radio too, but install one of those original look-alikes, with all of the modern conveniences.

@Accordius killedius Malibius.: Of course there were 8-track players in cars. Hell, I've seen exactly one home eight-track player. It was designed for the car, because it didn't skip like a vinyl record and cassettes were still a few years off.

@Seta Velloso: 8 track was everywhere before the cassette. It was the next big thing after reel-to-reel and vinyl. Yes it lent itself nicely to cars, and Ford's backing of the format was likely pivotal to its success, however it wasn't limited to cars. Cartridge systems existed prior to the stereo 8-track, but the 8-track eventually won out, and had about a 20 year run. That is, if you care.

Yes, record players in cars. Aside from this other Murilee Junk Yard Find post ,

@jdoubleh, aberration roulante: [shit]... anyhow what I was trying to say was- record players in cars in the 50's- they weren't intended for while the car was moving, but rather for picnics and other parked activities that may or may not have included a box-lunch.

If it were me, I'd probably have bought the whole Benz. :) Nice find, I mean, that looks just so damn cool, simple and clean, an Apple badge wouldn't look out of place on it (I mean that as a compliment, all Apple bashers, lay down your hammers).
