This is what it looks like to have a bird crash through your plane's window. It ain't pretty.
A Japanese Coast Guard plane hit an albatross while flying over the South China Sea last week. The long-winged ocean bird smashed a fairly sizeable hole in the plane's nosecone, but the plane managed to continue flying for another hour before safely landing.
The problem with functional hoodscoops is thus: our smaller wing'ed friends are sometimes unable to defeat the intake vacuum and wind up getting hoovered right into the works. That's right, kids, mesh those intakes, or you may get taken in the night by the vengeful spirit of ol' John James.
