Wish the limo was based on a Checker airport taxi, but this is more open minded and diverse than I would have expected. None are particularly practical, but showcase interesting development trends. #alternativeenrgy

I like the Duramax idea. I wonder exactly how hard a swap that is. Would like to do that to a Camino or maybe even a Nomad. #alternativeenrgy

@Skunky: It's not an easy engine swap, not so much because of the engine but because the massive torque made the installation of a Allison tranny necessary. That meant cutting the firewall and the floor panels, plus all kinds of cutting and replacing of the original hard mounts.

Still, it's a 65 Impala that destroyed a Lambo in the 1/4 mile and is street legal.

You can find the episode online by looking for "Earth Day Impala Pimp My Ride", but look for the full hour long video, not the one hosted by MTV. #alternativeenrgy

Bolting a roofrack to an S-10 and covering it with a solar array is stupid-smart. It's stupid nobody's much done it yet, and smart - it verges on a half-assed perpetual motion machine. The longer it stays parked, the farther it'll go when you need it. And the truck chassis has the capacity to really load on the batteries so you can have a pretty long range, and still some left for payload when you need it.

The grass-covered Volkswookie is just too much. It is in desperate need of the Volkswacker. #alternativeenrgy

Let's see if I got this. Veggie Van Productions, a 501 (c)(3) non-profit, made a film, Fuel. And their promotion for the film includes a caravan across the country. The star of the caravan is a modified Prius that will use 25 gallons of 5%algae-gasoline. The fuel is made by Sapphire Energy, which gets P.R. and a tax deduction.

Ben, your cynicism is far from super.

I would like to hear some more about the other vehicles in the caravan, the veggie van and the bio-diesel bus.

I am giong to be super cynical about this... and say:

I wonder if the algae fuel eats away at internel engine components and seals like the Ethonal does.

I submit that they should file those 164,000,000 gallons to me, so I can burn them in my Suburban, V8 boat and turbo Neon.

@zeeboid: Biodiesel will very quickly eat away older natural rubber seals, but not newer ones that have been developed. Also, the additional solvents tend to very quickly clean a fuel system, so changing the fuel filter is generally a required step soon after making the fuel switch.

All the algae necessary grows on roofs, the ground, and even south and west-facing pavement in the Pac NW.

    Problem solved.

Oh, and the algae-based diesel is merely a small component of the fuel, effectively an additive replacing the corn-ethanol being used, currently.

Just try putting diesel in a gasoline engine or vice versa. Contestant from The Amazing Race a few seasons ago can tell you gasoline works none too good in a diesel engine.

Europe + Americans = embarrassment for many of us born on this continent.

    Now make it 10%.

Hey, as long as I don't get stuck behind it and they bring it back to their coast, it sounds like a good idea to me. Algae is about as renewable as it gets.

Sapphire Energy seems like they've really got something there. Not specifically this worked over Prius, it is nice but it's mostly a promotion to focus on their product: algae biofuel. They have a website full of hype, but it doesn't seem to list any sort of production capacity. Never the less, this is a promising technology that could solve a lot of energy issues without the drawbacks of corn based fuels.

Dude, did you know there was a man in the '50s that designed an engine that would go 150 miles on a gallon of gas? The oil companies bought his patent then destroyed it. Greedy bastards.

@engineerd: No dude, it wasn't an engine; it was carburetor that the oil company bought the rights too and then destroyed, a 150 mpg carburetor. Man I bet with a VW Van that thing would have got like, 250 mpg dude.
