None other than Microsoft's Bill Gates.

The patent filing, number 20090091138, describes several different designs which do away with the traditional generator design with a standalone power source driving a separate electromagnetic generator. In a traditional generator, an oscillating or rotating permanent magnet is driven externally and moves inside a tightly wound and carefully designed bundle of wires, creating a magnetic field which induces electrical current. This patent describes two different types of motors which utilize the normal oscillations of a piston engine as the permanent magnet to induce current in the windings wrapped around the cylinder or the connecting rod.

The first engine uses a simplified piston assembly with a generating coil engaged below the combustion chamber by way of something like a connecting rod with an embedded magnet. The second, and more interesting engine uses a single floating piston between two opposed combustion chambers and the entire system is wrapped in wire. The motion of the piston itself has embedded magnets and is utilized as the oscillating magnet in the system.

Furthermore, the patent describes a plasma injector, which isn't as science-fictioney as it sounds. Plasma injectors would replace spark plugs as an ignition source and provides an utterly reliable and predictable ignition which is necessary for fine control of a flame front. The kind of thing which would be important if the failure to fire results in an unrestrained piston crashing into the end of the combustion chamber. Currently the design is awaiting patent and as far as we know there aren't plans to produce it right now, but presumably there are prototypes being developed. Assuming this kind of technology goes into a car somewhere down the road the jokes about Microsoft cars crashing into a blue screen of death will inevitably follow. <![CDATA[Bill Gates Buys Stake In AutoNation, Plans To Become Used Car Salesman]]> Bill Gates has acquired a 5.5% stake in AutoNation, a nationwide chain of car dealerships. The move saw the company's shares increase in value by $1 a share since the purchase was made on Monday, taking the value of Gates's holdings to $90.1 million; in fact, he's now the third largest shareholder. But what does Gates see in the firm?

Jalopnik Snap Judgment: Bill Gates has tons of money (literally, Scrooge McDuck style) and invests it in a number of places. Having said that, he is a shrewd investor, so he obviously expects AutoNation to do well in the coming years. Maybe the future of auto sales is high-volume used car retail centers? Maybe power within the industry is shifting from the manufacturers to the dealers? Maybe Bill just wants to score used car discounts for life? We don't know, but we bet he does.

<![CDATA[Bill Gates Drives a Ford Focus 2-Door?]]>
If you're like us and you too sit at the bleeding edge intersection of technology and cars, then you've spent some time checking out our gadget-obsessed brother site's coverage of CES this weekend. Most important to those of us of the auto-obsessive variety — was the Bill Gates keynote tonight because we knew we'd get a closer look at the new upgrades to the Ford-Microsoft Sync entertainment system. Who knew we'd also find Gates whores himself out in driving a 2008 Ford Focus 2-door in a humorous send-up on his last day at the office? We asked Ford PR whether Gates drives a Focus in "real life." The answer:

"I don't know why he wouldn't."
Hmm, we can think of around 56 billion reasons. (Hat tip to Craig!)]]>
