    I can tell you, as a law-abiding cyclist, that this sort of situation is why there's a nice grassy space beside the sidewalk.

    I might use the road anyway, honestly. It's wide and slow enough. #bicycling

    Just recently some guy rode his bike off the sidewalk, crossed infront of my car (all without shoulder checking) and stopped right at the intersection i needed to go through. I got a glare when i had the audacity to honk at him #bicycling

    Reminds me of the traffic lights in Pensacola, which are mounted to giant posts. The posts are maybe 18-24" in diameter and are planted dead-center of the sidewalk, within ten feet of the handicap ramp from the street. How is it that they require truncated domes on those ramps for handicapped people, but don't allow them access around their own friggin light posts without running into the grass or traffic? #bicycling

    This is reminiscent of the "traffic calming schemes" I've seen on UK roads before. Where most of the US just uses speed bumps to slow people down (only those who care about their suspensions), British towns will actually put an entire curb/chicane out into the road, forcing a two-lane road into a single lane where you're forced to stop and yield until it's clear. Very odd, but seemingly effective. #bicycling

    You'd think "road humps" (I've never seen them humping, thankfully) would slow more people with near-zero-percent sidewall height down, but they don't.

    There is an in-city advantage to long suspension travel and high-aspect ratio tires.

    With as much attention as is paid on US roads, I can see periodic one-lane traffic resulting in a 5,000% increase in head-on collisions. Hell, people can't figure stop signs out! #bicycling

    @Ash78 isn't really gone, but sorta is: They are and far less annoying than the Everest sized road humps that Edinburgh City Council seems to think are essential on most roads.

    We also have cycle paths that randomly stop and one that is marked on different sides of the road depending which end you start from, very confusing. #bicycling

    Classic. Happens all the time. I once made a movie about area streetscape, and a friend who's in a wheelchair gamely showed all of the spots where he couldn't fit through, or the potholes would tip him over, lack of curb cuts, etc. Made a powerful statement.

    Here, it looks like there were too many bikes sharing the sidewalk with pedestrians, so they decided to allocate some room to each. Just a few kinks still to be worked out.

    BTW, if you walk on a bike path in Germany, you will definitely be yelled at, and possible hit. Bikes only, verstand? #bicycling
